About Captain Dan's Around the Island Tours
Specializing in Wild Ponies since 2006! Ask about our Afternoon Pony Tour, available daily. Family friendly nature tours of Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. Our trip combines a sight-seeing and guided tour together. We search for wild ponies, dolphin, bald eagles, sea turtles, sting rays, all manner of wild fowl, and local creatures. Our signature “Around the Island Tour” covers over 25 miles of coastline, in 2-2.5 hours, never passing the same spot twice. We specialize in taking small groups, on extended trips, into isolated areas. Most trips take 6 guests max. In 2016 we added a 35’, 18 passenger boat to our fleet. We run our 35' boat on our afternoon pony tour, and by request for larger groups. Eight generations of our family have lived on Chincoteague Island. We are a real, small, local family owned and operated business by Capt. Dan, his wife Miss Abby, Dan’s father his father Capt. Ray, and now Dan and Abby’s son Capt. Gavin, a 3rd generation charter captain

We did a private your with Captain Doug. He was very knowledgeable about the island, ponies, and dolphins. He showed us dolphins and ponies during the tour. He was also a local so he told us a lot about the history of the ponies and island.

Dan shared a tremendous amount of knowledge and was funny as well. By far the best boat tour we have ever been on. I have never seen a captain go back to a spot we had left but dolphins showed up and we went back. This tour is a must. Rick & Kathy the two with all the questions.

This was the highlight of our trip to Chincoteague. Captain Ray was informative and we enjoyed his stories and connection to the area. The boats are clean and appear to be well maintained. We saw dolphins, a bald eagle and three bands of ponies. The last group of ponies were close to the water so we were able to drift and observe them for an extended amount of time. Part of the appeal of this tour was the relaxed atmosphere. Overall a five star experience!

I highly recommend both the tour and the business. The tour itself was excellent. Very informative and we were lucky enough to see an incredible amount of wildlife. Most impressed by how they handled their business. We were faced with bad weather and were kept advised of conditions. Canceled because of rain and wind. We rescheduled for the next day and weather was just good enough to go out. They let us know that conditions might be uncomfortable, but we took our chances and it was fine. At every step of the process, from booking to tour, they went out of their way to let us know we could cancel if we weren't comfortable going out on the water. Exceptional service.

Great experience with Capt. Gavin, 8th generation “Teaguer”, and he really knew his way around. We saw several pony herds, and foals! He also shared his knowledge of the islands, and the history. Highly recommend Capt. Dan’s Tours. We were on a semi-private tour, just 5 of us. Boat was comfortable, and Capt. Gavin provided binoculars, guidebooks, and blankets! Thanks Capt. Gavin and Capt. Dan’s Tours!
