About Captain Dan's Around the Island Tours
Specializing in Wild Ponies since 2006! Ask about our Afternoon Pony Tour, available daily. Family friendly nature tours of Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. Our trip combines a sight-seeing and guided tour together. We search for wild ponies, dolphin, bald eagles, sea turtles, sting rays, all manner of wild fowl, and local creatures. We talk about local history, culture, seafood industry, economy, and modern day life. Our signature “Around the Island Tour” covers over 25 miles of coastline, in 2-2.5 hours, never passing the same spot twice. We specialize in taking small groups, on extended trips, into isolated areas. Most trips take 6 guests max. In 2016 we added a 35’, 18 passenger boat to our fleet. We run our 35' boat on our afternoon pony tour, and by request for larger groups. Eight generations of our family have lived on Chincoteague Island. We are a real, small, local family owned and operated business by Capt. Dan, his wife Miss Abby, and his father Capt. Ray.

We took Captain Dan’s around the island tour as our introduction to Chincoteague and Assateague. Captain Dan himself pulled up to the dock at quarter to the hour, as promised. He greeted us warmly and welcomed us into his boat. His boat carries 6 passengers...More

Captain Dan is a friendly captain who knows a lot about the Island. We were able to get a fun history lesson while seeing some great scenery. We were able to see southern and northern herds! He was able to get close when the ponies...More

Capt. Dan's was the perfect choice for seeing ponies & eagles. Having a pontoon boat he was able to get up as close to the shore line as possible. We saw a herd of ponies with 3 foals which was enjoyable to see. Capt. Dan...More

Stop thinking about it and call to book. Capt. Dan was absolutely incredible. We started off the 8am tour following two sets of dolphins, then saw groups of ponies from both Northern and Southern herds. We were able to observe 8-10 ponies on the waters...More

Our tour guide was Captain Dan’s father. Started off a little rough when our guide was sharing his negative opinions of paid firemen as I happen to be a paid fireman. However, the wildlife we encountered made it possible to ignore the insults. What a...More

Great tour, but wanted it to end. Went for over spring break, and it was drizzling and cold. The boat provided a bunch of blankets, but freezing still.. Must do tour, but recommend anytime but mid March 😀. Bugs do get bad in the summertime.

This was absolutely one of the best island tours I've been on. Captain Dan is extremely knowledgeable, personable, and dam funny! We'll remember his stories for quite a while. Plenty of wildlife, pelicans, ducks, juvenile bald eagles, deer, and over 25 wild horses! Never a...More

The “Afternoon Pony Tour” is typically 2 to 2.5 hours, but it can sometimes run long. We have had a few that were 3 hours. It all depends on where we find ponies, and how far we have to go looking for them.

Hey guys, at this time the only way I can accommodate 19 passengers would be to put some folks on my larger boat (16 passengers max), and some on my smaller boat (6 passengers max). I don’t have that availableity on the 19th... More
