About
At nearly 18 miles long, this bridge-tunnel complex is one of the engineering wonders of the world. Connecting Virginia's Eastern Shore with Virginia's mainland in Virginia Beach/Norfolk, this toll facility will save travelers 90 miles or more as they travel from points north of Wilmington, Delaware and head down the East Coast towards Virginia Beach or North Carolina's Outer Banks. Enjoy a stop at the Scenic Overlook, located on the southern tip of Virginia's Eastern Shore, offering breathtaking views of the Chesapeake Bay and the facility. AND, if you want to take home a remembrance of your travels, visit Virginia Originals Gift Shop, located inside the Welcome Center and Rest Area at the North Toll Plaza on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Construction of the Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel is underway and the facility will remain open to traffic throughout construction. Upon completion, a new fishing pier will open on the southernmost island in 2027. Don't forget your E-ZPass!

Its a low bridge with 2 tunnels. I get more worried with crossing the NYC bridges. Great views, lots of boats in the water and its neat to see storms rolling in. The bridge DOES have a speed MINIMUM so if you are a slow poke on a bridge, have someone else drive.

It's worth driving over/under this at least once. The views are wonderful. Traffic can be heavy and slow at times. When you go into the tunnels, traffic comes into one lane so that can slow you down. It's pricey at $18 one way in summer but it's about a 15 minutes drive.

My husband and I made our first trip across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel today. It’s amazing what Man can do. If you have any angst about bridges or tunnels it probably would not be advisable to go across the CBBT. If you don’t have a fear or bridges or tunnels…especially tunnels that go waaaaaay underwater…experience crossing the Chesapeake Bay via a very scenic route. The two tunnels aren’t that long. We drove from Virginia Beach to Chincoteague Park and back to Virginia Beach in the same day. The fee to cross the CBBT was $14 both ways, unless you have EZPASS. I thought that was a bit expensive.

We drove over to the peninsula on a Friday after sunset, so we didn’t see the view. There was construction for the first few miles and the left lane was closed. We came back on a gloomy Sunday. I’m sure it would have been nicer on a sunny day. We had no issues paying exact change to the toll collector on the way over, but had to feed each individual bill into the machine on the way back even though there was a toll collector.

We were here in 2008 as well as this time, June 2021. (We live in Vancouver, Washington.) Both times the experience was interesting. On the first trip, there was a small restaurant with some tourist trinkets on an island, but it is no longer there, and you cannot exit to the island where it was. Still, the drive is an interesting one, being both under and over the water for 17.6 miles. The only other bridge across the Chesapeake Bay is near the north end of the bay. That bridge is impressive too, but not as long. There is a small pullout, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Scenic Overview, right where the bridge touches land on the peninsula east coast of Virginia. Great views of a bridge section from there, as well as the surrounding area.

I wasn’t sure if I could handle this because I get a little bit claustrophobic but I’m so glad I did it! We were vacationing in the area, driving from Williamsburg on to Virginia Beach and took the tunnel as a side trip. There are two underwater tunnels about a mile each but the tunnels are well lit. $14 toll both ways. We ate lunch in Cape Charles and took a picture at the love sign at the beach. Definitely worth the toll!

This drive was absolutely worth the trip. The gorgeous, glistening water is visible as far as the eyes can see. The tunnels were really cool too, they were well lit and the kids love driving in them.

Wow. Impressive. Having recently taken the Ocean Highway to Key West we were thrilled to find ourselves driving over and through the Chesapeake Bay bridge & tunnel on the US 13 highway. We were approaching from the south, driving up to Ocean City in Maryland. Having paid the toll of $14, we thoroughly enjoyed the spectacular sights of this fantastic piece of engineering. It spans almost 30 km and include 2 tunnels each of 1.6km in length. And it clearly saves a lot of time if you want to get anywhere on the peninsula. We thoroughly enjoyed this part of our long road trip from Key West to New York City.

we love bridges and this one is so much fun. we crossed during storms and it was so cool to see the different pockets of rainstorms in the distance on both sides as we traveled south. the tunnels are well maintained. the area where there used to be a restaurant is messed up but perhaps it is under construction. it used to be fun to eat there and watch ships and submarines travel by. hope that attraction comes back.

We took the road that passes by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. This section costs $16 but is worth it. For a long time, we drive on a bridge, then suddenly it becomes a tunnel. Very interesting to see. Too bad there is no place where you can stop to take photos.
