Unfortunately the house was closed for tours the day we stopped by due to employees needing to monitor parking for the football game. But the very kind lady who saw me peeking forlornly through the window graciously opened the door and showed us some photos of the place and told us a little about the house's history. Her affection for the place was palpable, and I can't wait to come back to tour the place properly. It's simply gorgeous on the outside, and from what I could see of the interior it too was beautiful.

For anyone who wants a sense of the history that is the wonderful town of Blacksburg, a quick trip to the Alexander Black House and Cultural Center will do the trick. Friendly staff will help guide you through the various exhibits, and you can take as much time as you need to view the various objects from lives of members of the Black family. I'll have to visit again when I have some time to see what new exhibits they have.

I came here for the grand opening in August. It is such a gorgeous place! The front porch wraps around the building and you can relax and sit on one of the rocking chairs. The interior has been restored to its original beauty. There are art displays and interactive stations for visitors.

They also hold some events, like live music, genealogy classes, art classes and more.

The great-great-grandson of the founder of Blacksburg, Alexander Black, a prominent businessman, built this Queen Anne Victorian architectural style home in 1897. The family lived in the home until Alexander's death in 1935.

Beautiful building with gorgeous furnishings and woodwork that clearly has a place in Blacksburg history. Not many exhibits, especially when the one we wanted to see most was closed off for a meeting (we saw no notice on the website so we drove in from Roanoke). Paid parking, free admission, variety of local items in gift shop. Walkable to several local restaurants.

We were very lucky to have as a tour guide a board member whose mother knew the family. We loved the fact that so many items were original to the house.

We visited the Alexander Black House and had a fantastic experience there. It really makes a difference that the person giving the tour is a historian / expert in history. We are lucky to have this resource in our little town. This is a great place to visit. :)

Really lovely woodwork throughout the house. The original ceilings are awesome too. You can't get into the old basement because the house has been moved. Nice visit for a cold day.

Stumbled upon this restored, historic home while visiting our daughter at Virginia Tech. The docent was very nice and explained the history behind this home. One furnished room and beautiful detail through the rest of the first floor. Second floor is being prepared for future viewing. Included a small gift shop and young children's room. Free admission.

They close at 4 and we arrived at 3:30 so we didn't get to spend time there. I downloaded the tour so can listen to it on the way home. Very friendly staff. Gorgeous turn of the century house. Comprehensive history of the house and Blacksburg.

We have visited the permanent and temporary displays inside and outside at this beautifully restored facility. We often attend the Lifelong Learning presentations related to Blacksburg History and Heritage at the Alexander Black House
