- caribbeantraveler911,181 contributionsNice Stop While in VermontOur friends took us to see Shelburne Farms and walk around the property. It was a bit of a dreary day, but so worth seeing. It sits off the water on well maintained grounds. We were only there for a brief time, and there is so much more to see and do than what we experienced.Visited September 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten March 1, 2023
- Camille H19 contributionsThe prettiest place near Lake ChamplainThis place is a dream with green spaces as far as the eyes can see, with an amazing view on the lake, amazing properties and values (sustainability and all), and cute animals that are really well treated. It is also donation based so you pay whatever you want. I highly recommend stopping by the bakery to get a raisin bread!Visited May 2023Written May 24, 2023
- kate mNewburyport, Massachusetts31 contributionsHeavenly.Stunningly beautiful complex with a conservation and sustainability ethic. Frederick Law Olmstead, Sr.'s imprint is on the property. Lots of trails to walk and activities for children; carefully restored farm, breeding and coach barns and a lovely inn; beautiful gardens; situated right on Lake Champlain.Visited June 2023Traveled with friendsWritten June 19, 2023
- Kristopher P5 contributionsIncredible experienceBest part of my trip to Vermont! The staff is so friendly and smart. The animals were unbelievably cute and interactive. The foods you can get are tasty. You can browse around at your pace or take one of their tours. Absolutely love this place and hope to go back one day!Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 5, 2023
- delanoctGainesville, Florida19 contributionsOutdoor Concerts at Shelburne FarmsHubby & I have attended three of the outdoor concerts (jazz and bluegrass) this past couple of months and cannot say enough good things about the experience! Bring your own lawn chairs, blankets (plastic tarps if the ground is damp), etc. You can bring your own picnic dinner/snacks or they have DELICIOUS dinners for sale from a company that grills meats and veggies, including vegetarian options. Also an ice cream food truck has been there with some very unique flavor offerings! Also, you can bring your own beverages (including wine, beer, cider, etc). There are people of all ages including lots of children running around. The farm animals are nearby for petting. These concerts have been very festive and family- friendly. Hint: The concerts start at 6pm, but you can enter a little before 5:30pm and hike one of their trails to get a beautiful view of Lake Champlain!Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 17, 2023
- Renon p4 contributionsBest Farm experienceThis place is so lovely! It had a farm charm plus elegance! My granddaughters loved feeding the calves and seeing all the animals. The tractor ride was especially fun to make the whole farm experience. I would recommend buying the cheese, it was very tasty. We will be back on our next visit.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 18, 2023

Our guide was amazing, she really helped make it an unforgettable time! We got to hang out with the cows and the calves, OMG, so darn cute! We also got to taste all of the cheese they make and learn about the cheese-making process.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 20, 2023

It was such a beautiful view so glad we stopped. The farm itself looked like something from a movie. Recommend highlyVisited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 21, 2023
- NPSeakerAlbany, New York391 contributionsOne of our favorite places to visitAfter coming here many times, we could not pass up another stop on the way home from visiting Vermont. We never get tired of the beautiful grounds here. We had been in the car for several hours and wanted to stretch our legs on the nice pathways (gravel walkways) here. The scenery is beautiful and the walk is just right from where you park, to the large barn where they have a bakery and cheese making area. The animals are nice to look at (especially the 2 donkeys). There is a small store where you park that sells delicious shortbread cookies along with other items like cheese and beverages. There are many walking trails and in the past we have walked to the Lake Champlain shoreline and house. There is a lot of history here and the man that works at the entrance booth shared some history with us that we appreciated. If you just want to walk around, there is no cost.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 30, 2023

Visited the farms based on the reviews everywhere on the internet and wasn’t disappointed ! The property is huge and offers miles of trails where you can either interact with animals , watch maple trees tapped or marvel at the beautiful inn and the barn . I must say I think the farm offers the best view of the lake . Be prepared to spend at least three hours when visiting to truly enjoy the views offered by the farm .

I see that the more negative reviews are referring to day visits. My review is for overnight guests. We stayed at the inn for 2 nights. It was perfect. Perfect! The history of Shelbourne Farms is very interesting, and there are books in each room to learn all about it. The Webb family’s original portraits grace the main rooms. The wood details on the staircase and throughout the inn are breathtaking. If you want to have a cup of coffee in an 19th century library with beautiful views, while sitting on original furniture and looking around at hundreds of volumes of beautifully preserved books, well…this is the place for you!!
We hiked for miles without leaving the property. We took along the fresh-baked bread and cheese made on the farm. There are benches along the trails for places to stop and enjoy a picnic.
The dinners were unique and creative. Our host Ari was incredibly helpful, and the staff was very professional. We had breakfast in the dining room the first morning but enjoyed complimentary homemade muffins and coffee in the library the second morning. After hiking, we sat on Adirondack chairs in front of the lake and sumptuous gardens.
I loved this place.

Overflow parking exists for RVers and large-sized vehicles. ADA and non-ADA portable bathrooms are available. If you are planning to purchase food or other retail items, cash and credit are accepted. It is FREE to enter and walk on the miles of trails. Donations are accepted. Bicycles are NOT permitted on the trails. Wear bug spray and sunscreen. Bring plenty of water and snacks. Water refills are available. As there are around 10 miles of trails, where appropriate footwear. Assess your personal fitness level before you go. Maps are available, or take a photo of the map. The staff is exceptional, as they are kind and helpful.

Absolutely LOVED this stop. Spent 4 hours walking around the farm, taking in the views from the inn, and admiring the unique barn architecture. The garden at the inn overlooking the lake is one of a kind. We ended with a farm fresh picnic with all of the to-go salads from the store. SOO yum. I've never liked beets before this beet salad.

Went here and had Brunch at the INN; we stopped at the bakery which had incredible bread, the cheese making place, and the animals. really enjoyed the beautiful place and the feeling. The grounds were well kept and the staff was friendly. Wanted to do a tour when we got to the bakery and asked if we could sign up there, they said you had to go back out to the front but with our reservation at the INN we didnt have time so we called. When we called they said it would be fine and we could do the tour no problem. When we got to the front gate for the tour they said they sold out. really unfortunate because we were on the grounds and could only book via phone as we didnt have time to go back out front or we would miss our reservation time.

My family and I enjoyed Shelburne Farms so much we went here on consecutive days. It is basically a huge estate and working farm with a Gilded Age mansion on it. There are walking trails and animals and you can explore the grounds for free.
The first day we hiked up to Lone Tree Hill, the highest point on the property. The second day we did the 4.5 mile loop out to the estate and formal gardens. It is a lot of walking but over mostly flat terrain and both the mansion and the gardens were worth the effort. Needless to say, we loved it here!

What a special place!
Working dairy farm with cheese making factory and bakery.
We stopped wanting to purchase some local farm cheese, but decided to take a walk around the property. We were so happy we did.
The walk to the dairy barn is about 3/4 mile, easy walk and well marked.
The dairy barn and surrounding buildings are beautiful. A must see!
A short 1/4 mile hike up hill, brings you to beautiful vista of the farm, Lake Champlain, Green Mountains and the Adirondack Mountains. Well worth the short hike!

Hi, how much is the admission ticket to Shelburne farms per person, if we want to walk the trails and see some of the pet activities.

According to their website, trails & barn are open to public by donation. They are a non-profit organization, so they depend upon the donations. They have other programs both for children and adults on all kinds of topics and they DO charge for those special programs. But only donations to walk the trails & visit the barn.
What are you allowed to bring in for a concert on the green? Cooler? Food? Alcohol? Just want to be prepared for a great time 😊. Thanks!

Do you allow dogs?
ShelFarm
Shelburne1 contribution
Hi there,
If you're planning a visit with us this summer, we'd love to have you, but unfortunately, dogs are not allowed, so that we can keep our many visitors and farm animals comfortable and safe. However, there is a town dog park less than a mile down the road from our entrance, which is open to guests. (My dog loves it!) Hope this helps. (Leashed dogs only are allowed from November 1 to March 31, which is probably what earlier responses are referring to.)

I believe the Inn and restaurant are closed during the winter...the rest of the farm remains open to visit which is still worth the effort! If you want a fancy Inn dining experience try the Pitcher Inn in Warren and make a reservation!

We won’t be arriving in the area until close to 4pm but I see that you are open until 5:30. What is open and available to tour, taste, purchase during that time?
ShelFarm
Shelburne1 contribution
Hi there, Unfortunately, arriving close to 4pm will put some activities out of reach. But here's what's available: You can walk on our walking trails and enjoy cheese samples at our Welcome Center & Farm Store until 5:30. If you want to take the last tractor shuttle from the Welcome Center to the Farm Barn, the last shuttle leaves at 4pm (and the last shuttle returning from the Barn to the Welcome Ctr leaves at 4:45). At the Farm Barn, you'll miss scheduled activities at the Children's Farmyard, but can certainly still enjoy the animals, or grab some bread at O Bread Bakery. All of our property tours will be over for the day. I hope this helps!
Do we need to bring chairs for a concert?

Whether you're attending one of our Wednesday night concerts at Shelburne Farms or have tickets for one of the Ben & Jerry's Concerts at Shelburne Museum, bringing your own chairs or a blanket to sit on is a good idea!

The North East Kingdom is a beautiful, less-populated area of Vermont, filled with winding roads, covered bridges, cow-filled fields in the foreground of magnificent, crimson and golden mountains. Drive up past Lake Willoughby, through Montgomery Center, over Rte 58 (for possible moose sightings), and spend the night at the Highland Lodge in Greensboro in your own cottage overlooking CAspian LAke. Take a day trip over to Burlington Waterfront and Ride across the lake on the "Ethan ALlen" boat, while enjoying wine and cheese. Drive back over to your cottage and enjoy the peace and quiet in Vermont's hidden gem, the North East Kingdom.
