19th century charm

Step back in time when entering. Beautiful wood work and an amazing 19th century art gallery in the back with a stunning Bierstadt landscape of Yosemite that dominates the room.

This is actually the public library, but the collection of art work inside is amazing, especially in the gallery in the rear of the building, where there was a charming docent who shared her enthusiasm for the various paintings. The entire building is amazing, with woodwork everywhere, multiple wooden spiral staircases, etc. It felt like stepping back in time, the... More

Who goes to a LIBRARY on vacation? WE DO!!! This place is amazing! It is old, beautiful, and interesting. The woodwork is exquisite and the paintings are so rich and old. WE LOVED IT!

This an opportunity to see a very unusual collection paintings within the setting of a working library. There is no charge to enter, but the experience so unique that you might want to leave a donation.

On a holiday road trip down from Quebec, I decided to check my email at the local library in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. I had never heard of the town before and was unprepared for this jewel. While in the library I was glad to have brought my camera as photos had to be taken!. I forgot about the internet! Nearby... More

Its hard to select my favorite part, the art gallery, the historic records, the architecture, the history of the Fairbanks family, etc. What a local treasure! The staff offered insights on the collections and the history and seemed genuinely happy to spend their time with visitors.

A true old-fashioned cozy library that warrants a stop and some meandering. I could spend hours here. It has wonderful artistic detailing carpentry and character. In addition there is a room filled with great paintings and artwork. Be sure to have a docent help provide info about the history of this wonderful historic site.

This is primarily a library but there is a wonderful collection of western art including a large painting by Albert Bierstadt. Well worth a visit. There is an admission charge for the paintings. Wifi available

I was drawn to the Athenaeum strictly to have a look at the exterior of the building while expecting to take a cursory look at the inside. That is until I met Ewa, the docent whose love of this place oozes from her pores. Clearly passionate about the Athenaeum, its art, and its history, this native of Poland is well-schooled... More
