This was our first visit to the Green Mountains with my family. We camped at the Emerald Lake State Park and had a wonderful time. The campground is clean, well organized, quiet and family friendly. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Around the area, there is an amazing swimming hole in an old quarry, definitely worth visiting. Also there are good fishing ponds (not that us amateurs caught anything!), very charming. I loved Vermont's Green Mountains and I will definitely go back!

Our first visit to the Green mountains was everything we expected and more! After touring New Hampshire and the White Mountains we decided to check out Vermont and the Green mountains, well worth it. The mountain ranges are breath taking! Our visit was brief so hiking wasn't park of the plan, a return visit is in the works. I highly recommend touring Vermont and the Green mountain National Forest! You won't regret it!

Great hike if you enjoy waterfalls. Was a bit disappointed that we couldn't go to the cliffs which are closed closed during peregrine falcon nesting season from March 15 through August 1. If I had $15K, I would have risked it...

If TripAdvisor can acknowledge the Shawnee National Forest in Herod, Illinois, on its system, it surely can make room for the Green Mountain National Forest in Rutland, Vermont. After all, TripAdvisor publishes reviews for Green Mountain National Golf Course, Green Mountain Sugar House (whatever that is) and Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center. So why not Green Mountain National Forest, which covers nearly 400,000 acres and is the biggest contiguous land mass in the state. Established in 1932, the forest supports a variety of wildlife, including beaver, moose, coyote, black bear and white tailed deer. It also supports a large variety of bird species, including wild turkey and ruffed grouse. In addition, the forest contains three nationally designated trails--parts of the Appalachian Trail, Long Trail and Robert Frost National Recreation Trail--and also three alpine ski areas, seven Nordic ski areas and about 900 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, cross country skiing, snowmobiling and horseback riding. And that doesn't include the thousands of visitors who drive through the park annually, just to take in the green scenery. The park can be accessed from several towns, including Rutland and Bennington. The park headquarters are located at 231 North Main Street in Rutland.

We drove through the Green Mountain National Forest during the 2nd week of October. We got to see some really beautiful fall colors. We were very short on time so we just drove through We drove down State Rd 7 all through the park up until Bennington, and then took Rt 9 east all the way out. We had to return to Boston to catch a flight back.
One thing I do want to point out is that on our drive, we were expecting some type of information center where we could get any interesting trail maps that we could hike for few hours. We didn't find one until we got to Bennington. If we had known this earlier, we would have planned our route differently and could have gone on few of the trails.
Instead, we ended up finding 3 covered bridges in Bennington and spent our time photographing them.

With AT / LT running through, lots of fun for hikers. Being a long weekend the campgrounds were busy but we were just sight seeing anyways. Grout pond is big enough for swimming / paddling. Fun!

We took a picnic to Lara Falls in Green Mountain National Forest yesterday and had the best time! In our group were a three-year-old, a six-year-old, a 35-year-old and a 65-year-old. We all were able to hike the uphill trail with no problems. Many beautiful overlooks and places to wade in the stream along the way. Mosquitoes were a problem in the shaded areas and there was some mud from a recent rain, but you can do the hike in sneakers. Highly recommended!

Followed Rte 100 north. Roads are in good repair for the most part. Easy to follow. Stopped at a couple of nice waterfalls along the way & the Café in Rochester for lunch was wonderful.

If you find that you have a beautiful summer day but a bit windy for kayaking, try Grout Pond. Grout Pond is small but not too small. It appears to be protected from the winds where the bigger lakes would not be safe for small kayaks on windy days.
The water was clean and great for a swim.

GMNF has many access points throughout the state from all types of roads. Hiking, birding, XC skiing, snowmobiling, leaf-peeping and mountain biking are a few of the activities you can enjoy here. Be aware that some of the Forest Service roads are not maintained in the winter and can be tough going in spring/mud season.

There is so much to see and do in Burlington alone. The Stowe Vermont area is lovely at foliage time but very busy. We have taken rides to the White Mountains and hiked only a bit near Tuckerman's Ravine. There is the Cog Railroad that goes up the mountain. Expensive but beautiful. The Mt. Washington Road is thrilling. There are special chairlift rides at some of the mountains.
You should get some books or catalogs to map your adventures. The Mt. Washington Hotel is spectacular Jefferson Inn was once a choice for us but that was years ago. The Whitney Inn may still be in the area and not far from many attractions. You will be driving a fair amount to go from place to place.

We are skiing in Stowe and Killington VT then driving back down to NYC during New Years week. Should we stop in the Green Mountains National Park on the way down? Will we see/do different things other then at the ski resorts in VT? We are from Florida so we enjoy the scenery we don't have there
