About
Smugglers' Notch Distillery® is a father/son partnership in Jeffersonville, Vermont. The distillery was founded in 2006 at the foot of the famed Smugglers' Notch, site of many a clandestine bootlegger's run through this rugged Vermont mountain pass. The smuggling route was actually first used during the 1800s to move goods during the trade embargo and then again in the 1920s to move liquor during prohibition. Today this enchanting area provides outdoor enthusiasts with a boulder-laden curved mountain road and caves to explore. Smugglers' Notch Distillery® provides Carefully crafted, award-winning spirits. Using the finest ingredients blended with pristine Vermont spring water, we make, barrel age, blend, and hand-bottle remarkably distinctive, spirits one small batch at a time.

We are new to the area and thought we would stop in for a taste and see what was available locally. Woman behind the bar was not interactive at all. It was like take your samples and get out of my face...no salesmanship or information. I have to say we are food and alcohol geeks, which brings me to the first point. There's no crackers, or bread, or anything to cleanse one's palette so they don't all run together. Little plastic cups are not good for the environment or tasting alcohol...there's an item called Glencairn glass and you should get those kind of glasses for a tasting, or basically anything other than a tiny plastic cup. I don't expect to drink out of a barbie size plastic glass when I pay for a tasting. I have no problem with paying for a tasting, but at least use real glasses and have something to cleanse one's palette. We were not impressed, and would certainly not buy their alcohol at a liquor store. I would think they should hold their own liquor in esteem and make the tasting interesting, informative or at least use real glasses.

I have been to distilleries and vineyards in UK and Australia. I had some bad experience. But the visit to Smugglers Notch distillery had me thinking whether I had made a big mistake. There was only one staff. She was not keen to help me even though I paid $10 for the tasting session. She did not even explain and was minding her own business. When we posed any questions she just rattled off as though we do not have a faintest idea about whisky. It was most disgusting when she explained about single barrel. Have she got any training on 1) whisky she is promoting and 2) customer service? Of the owners are reading this, please make an attempt to do things right. I read interesting stories about smugglers notch and I went to get a few bottles. I have drank the best of scotches and I had wanted to try bourbon whiskey for once. This is enough to understand the standards.

The lady doing the tasting (which was pretty expensive in my experience, seemed like we were doing her a huge disservice by stopping in. Perhaps we were, but if that’s the case, just sell your products to liquor distributors and call it a day. Zero personality, by far the worst experience I’ve ever had at a distillery. I asked if I could see their still, “No” was the one word reply. Thanks. If Mrs hadn’t insisted, I’d have bought nothing but the samples. Won’t go back.

Smugglers' Notch Distillery was a pleasant surprise on our road trip through northern Vermont. Close to Smugglers' Notch, with its rich history of people smuggling with the Underground Railroad and prohibition era smuggling, the distillery draws on regional flavors like maple and distills with that pure Vermont water. On the day we visited, the weather was impeccable, and we tried a tasting flight outside in the sun and ended up with a bottle of rum.

I had seen the SN tasting room in downtown Burlington, but never had time to stop in over a busy holiday weekend. Traveled with a group to Stowe and we stopped at the cheese shop on the way back. Finding the tasting room was a happy surprise. Huntly was so knowledgeable, after she ran down the tasting notes on all of the products, it was difficult to choose 4 to taste. I love that they incorporate the maple into so many of their spirits. Since I was traveling by air, I purchased a sample pack, but Huntly made sure that I had the website info for future orders.

We stumbled upon this micro-distillery by accident. They are a local family run company distilling rum, vodka and gin. The staff was very personable, and more interested in sharing the history of the product than making a fast sale.
The vodka happened to be ranked #1 by the Beverage Tasting Institute in 2011. I would agree it is a superior vodka with a smooth, sweet finish.
The hours were flexible; it seemed that as long as someone was in the building, they were open to visitors, so passing by is worth the trip.

This place has some very good vodka and rum. The bourbon is good as well. It is worth an hour to visit, sample, take the "tour," and purchase some of the award winning spirits!

Sometimes the best thing about stopping is the staff which were fantastic. When they love what they do it comes out in the excitement when they talk about the vodka and other spirits. No cost tasting but don't be surprised if you buy a bottle of the vodka.

We stopped after we passed by and saw the sample gin, rum, and vodka sign. The distillery is run by a local family . The staff was incredible and I can' t say enough about the gin, rum, and vodka. All were amazing! If you are a gin lover like I am, then you have to try this gin. It is incredible ! The rum is constantly changing and settles in to a pleasant rum surprise. The vodka is smooth going down. Hopefully, you will check this place out because you will not be disappointed!

Stopped into this plaza with a handful of great stores and if you’re into the distillery thing, Smuggler’s Notch Distillery is worth your time. They have multiple options for tastings and a really nice selection. The prices aren’t bad, and in addition to some good beverages, they have some fantastic maple syrup.
