- rockobello416 contributionsStarting to lose patronsThis street years ago was really happening. 2022, post covid, a little less so. The mall is gone as is Five Guys (no loss there as majority is local businesses) and we can see a decline in its popularity the last few times we have come by. Is nice but unfortunately losing its luster.Visited December 2022Written December 21, 2022
- Lindsey CIndiana103 contributionsI guess it's not what I've heard it used to be...We didn't get to spend too much time here, as we arrived a little late and many of the places were closing, if not already closed. For the stores we did visit, the people working seemed very friendly. The street looks nice enough, but is also resembles many of the shopping areas in New England, so it doesn't stand out as very unique for the area. It is true though, the homeless are everywhere! Way more here than in the other towns that we visited. No one bothered us, and to be honest, I'm not usually bothered by people with that lifestyle, but I know some people are more sensitive than others, so if you've read other posts about it, then I'm just here to let you know that it's true.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 4, 2023
- Maureen BPalmyra, Pennsylvania88 contributionsNice place to visit. We arrived early on a Sunday morning so mostly all the store/restaurants weren’t open. That was ok because we wandered around and stopped to listen to music in the park area. Places started to open up so we walked the streets and started to shop. Love the closed off streets. Reminds us of a larger version of Ithaca Commons in NY.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 10, 2023
- Tony BPlymouth, Massachusetts26 contributionsNice collection of local shopsWe went there on a day where it was raining a bit, but the overall vibe of the place was cool. Many local shops, but also some midsize chains that maybe not a lot of people have heard of. Prices were a bit high throughout, but I haven't done this type of shopping since before inflation, so maybe that's the norm. I map of the stores and locations would be helpful, as we missed some on the side streets that I would have liked to go into. Maybe it was the timing, but we didn't experience the "dangerous" conditions others reported.Visited August 2023Written August 10, 2023
- Happy TravelerMiddletown, New York22 contributionsFun, cute, would recommend!Loved this stretch of shops! Fun to do if you have a few hours set aside! I'd recommend shopping and planning a stop for lunch/dinner. Just a few blocks from Waterfront Park! You can easily make a 1/2 day of this strip when combined with a meal, strolling Waterfont, etc.Visited August 2023Written August 16, 2023
- Robin MBrookville, Pennsylvania645 contributionsNice MarketplaceWe stopped at Church Street Marketplace for a little shopping. This marketplace was four or five blocks long. There were several stores and restaurants. The street was clean. There were lots of tourists just like us. It could use a few more places to sit down and people watch.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 20, 2023

I felt we saw there everything there was to see in a very short time, not enough to keep you entertained for more then one day. Not much variety for restaurants, mostly just sandwiches for choices. It is very clean. The city has a lot of homeless & we were told it is hard to make a living, but the median price of housing is high & the stores were over prices so unsure who they are catering to.

The Flynn theater was great and fun we went to check out Church Street on a Tuesday early before the show. The adjacent park had at least two groups of homeless type people doing drugs in broad daylight. I’m not talking smoking marijuana. Something good like a meth or crack. Not to be let down Church Street came through. Several more homeless people some of which were holding their pants up with their hands others were sleeping on the sidewalk. My favorite of all was a large tall man standing in the middle of church street yelling at passerby‘s injecting himself aggressively into passerby‘s conversations. I thought the whole thing was a hilarious crap show. I’m glad I didn’t have any children with me it would be quite nerve-racking

This is a very nice array of shops and restaurants along one long street. Street musicians play while the shoppers stroll the street searching for the best bargain in their favorite boutique. It is very inviting to the college crowd especially.

We just stayed overnight in Burlington prior to catching a flight home and figured this would be a great place to explore. It was! An open air, pedestrian only walk-mall, it had a lot of the name brand stores you would expect to see - BUT there were some great restaurants and local "Shop Small" businesses that of course we visited. Plenty of different restaurants and bars to enjoy and with the festive lighting at night - made it feel magical. We did not have trouble finding a place to park, but it is metered parking that does take credit cards. We had a blast!

In Burlington Vermont a nice pedestrian only area with shops and restaurants. There is a nice mural in an alley showing the history of Vermont as well as a few interesting statues and buildings. Very beautiful when lit up at night when the snow is falling!

Not sure if it was the time of day we visited, 4 pm ish, but the street people would out in force. Was asked for cash at least 5 times in an hour. The day we visited it was cold and overcast and it was just about to rain. Would have loved it in the sunshine.

I really enjoyed the walk through town here with my dog. It's kept very well and I recommend the Marketplace Garage for parking as it's cheap and takes you right to the center area. Great vendors and food places, wide open so even when it's crowded you have space. Some vendors not dog friendly which was the only downside for me.

Great pedestrian area. Easy to navigate, with lots of shops and restaurants. There’s something for everyone here, in all price ranges. Fabulous Frog in the Hollow is here- artists’ coop shop, with unique items, ranging from cards to pottery to jewelry. Not to be missed if you are in Burlington.

Very art oriented and beautiful throughway of Burlington, VT offering loads of privately-owned shops that cater to almost every interest ranging from clothes to ice cream to pubs and eateries. It seems like lice music plays here quite frequently and can be heard droning up and down the street on two nights we spent in Vermont. There are usually many people during the busy hours, but not enough to feel too crowded and uncomfortable. One end of the street holds the beautiful church hende “Church Street” while the other end holds the state government buildings since it is Capitol city of Vermont. There is a hilly part when you head toward the government side, but not terribly bad even for a big guy like myself with bad knees. While in Burlington, you'd be remiss if you didn't visit this amazing place! It was one of my favorite parts of our road-trip to Rhode Island.

Church Street Marketplace is a nice 4-5 block feature located in the heart of Burlington's city center. This popular pedestrian only walkway was built in 1980 and is loaded with shops and restaurants along with vendors. Many of the restaurants have outdoor seating located in the Church Street walkway giving you a cosmopolitan feel, as we had, eating outside at the Irish bar RiRa. It's a great place for nice city views and people watching. Most the side streets also had shopping and restaurants. The only negative was restrooms, with the only one located in the basement of city hall. Reasonably priced parking garages close by.

Visiting weekday during mid oct. are all of these shops open weekdays or should we do it on the weekend?

Hi there. I am a regular in Burlington as I have siblings living there. Typically all the shops and restaurants are open all the time, every day, weekday or weekend.
Given the current COVID situation, I would wait until much closer to the date you want to visit and then "Google" the Church Street mall and call a few places to see what's open and what's (maybe) not.
Good luck. It is a wonderful place to walk, window shop, dine and drink, especially in the fall. Peter in Montreal

I will respond in English (S.V.P.). I am not an expert concerning winter activities (les activites d'hiver) in Burlington, because I visited in October, but "hockey a glace" and ice skating for sure are omnipresent along Lake Champlain. There are always the many brew pubs, bistrops, shops, and interesting emporiums at the Church Street Marketplace (such as, one of the first Ben & Jerry Ice Cream Parlors) which are normally open unless there is a severe winter storm.
Hi! My husband and I are trying to plan a trip this Christmas. We are traveling with a dog and we’re curious if any of the restaurants on Church Street still offer outdoor seating in the winter (maybe with little space heaters)?? 🥶

Sorry not to answer sooner, but I was traveling in New Zealand (enjoying summer) and missed the question. I doubt if the few restaurants on the Church Street Marketplace would offer outdoor seating with heaters in December. In coastal Southern California where I live, yes; in frigid Vermont, no.
There might be greenhouse dining areas at some restaurants in Burlington but I don’t recall any along Church Street.
My husband and I will be visiting for one night Jan 31st- feb 1st. Any events going on or a must do or see?
Thanks
Laura

It's probably cold in that period of that year, so be ready to wear heavy clothes.
In town, there are nice restaurants and cozy bars where you can warm up.
Is it dog friendly?

My wife and I will be in the Burlington area 12/13 - 15. Since we'll only be there a short while, thoughts, suggestions on "Must see" spots greatly appreciated. we don't mind a little drive to get the best experience. Thanks in advance.

You probably are arriving on the 13th and leaving on the 15th. I suggest you plan to spend time downtown. The Christmas lights will be up and the street looks magical. Maybe a cocktail at one place, dinner at another, then dessert someplace else. (I endorse Tratorria Delia for dinner; my absolute favorite although not wheelchair accessible) Have one exquisite chocolate at Champlain Chocolates. I count on the website of our local indie paper to tell me what's happening. The paper is called Seven Days. The website is of the same name.
It has all the news about events. A little too early to have much listed for your stay dates. I looked at the Flynn theater website for your stay dates and didn't find anything; that's very unusual. The Flynn is an art deco theater that has been updated and it's worth a look but no events scheduled as of now. Drive down to Shelburne to visit the Teddy Bear Factory and learn how the very successful business came to be. You will enjoy it even if you don't have children. There is a free shuttle bus that will bring you from the University of Vermont down to the waterfront. Since Burlington is built on a hill this little bus will climb the hill for you. Do go to the waterfront; it's magnificent in the winter as well as summer. The Courtyard by Marriott has a nice outdoor patio where they have a roaring fire in winter; great to sit and stare at the flames. If you go to the very top level of the many parking garages you get a wonderful view of the city as well as the lake and across to New York. Great spot; and free! Hope this helps.

Any suggestions on what to do in Burlington on a Monday in September? Sounds like downtown might be pretty dead. Am thinking about renting a bike or walking along the lake, but what if the weather is not so good? Ideas?

Church Street Marketplace, a four block pedestrian street in the heart of the downtown, is lined with shops and restaurants of all descriptions and interest. Not sure when they close for the day, but most should be open late in early September. There is an extensive bikeway in Burlington and the walk along the lake is really nice. More to do in Burlington than I had initially expected.

We have a dog that we bring downtown during the outdoor eating season, however I am not aware of any eateries where a dog (excepting service dogs, of course) are allowed into the establishment. Sorry

Church Street Marketplace runs N-S for several blocks beginning at Main Street and ending at Cherry (I think). The two streets that run parallel on either side are Winooski (east) and St. Paul (west). If you're walking on Main st and can see the Flynn Space (big theater marquee), you're practically there. It starts on the north side of Main.
