We really enjoyed hiking through the foothills here. Too much snow in the mountains but the paths were clear here. The welcome center was super helpful and had a good trail map. The views are beautiful as we climbed. We also took the path in the wetlands which was very nice. No fee- just donations.

They have a gift shop with homemade soap, books about some of the wildlife on the preserve for children, and other goodies. There were different levels you could view the preserve and there was a room for children which had a "firefly" cave, rock climbing wall, and arts and crafts. They had a long walkway which took you right into the center of the preserve and it was beautiful seeing cranes, swallows, and all kinds of birds! It was very educational and fun!

We spent a couple of hours here on a lovely Saturday afternoon. We saw two adult and two young sandhill cranes from the thrid floor observatory. We then took the nature walk around the preserve, but did not see any more wildlife. We continued on walking on the path that meanders through the preserve and through a neighborhood. I am sure the residents don't enjoy all the tourists wandering by their patios, but it was a lovely walk for us.

So fortunate to have a personal tour this snowy April morning! Light snow, and some fog did not take away from this interesting tour. Sand Hill Cranes, ducks, birds, voles, and history with Sarah Beth made this a great outing I would recommend. This is a treasure of wetlands in an otherwise arrid area. Much to learn and very worthwhile.

First group out in the morning. Rented snowshoes at Swaner, the price is very reasonable. Our guide was informative and enjoyed showing us around. That seems to be the standard with the staff. It was an easy walk through the snow and took about an hour. It was a special winter day bright sunny and the trees had a coat of ice. Swaner is a favorite gathering place for the male Elks. Swaner is located at the back of the Newpark Town CVenter so that makes it easy to find a place to eat after your excursion. Or if you're into shopping you're very close to the discount mall at Kimball Junction.
