Perfect Tour
Oct 2019 • Couples
My family and I booked our 2.5 hour tour in just a couple of minutes. Once we arrived at Monument Valley I located our tour guide Jones. He was very friendly and informative. He was also very accommodating to the members of my family who are physically challenged.

Having been to Monument Valley before, I knew what to expect and where the highlights were. Jones took us to all the great spots, snapped family photos for us and helped us out with anything we needed along the way

I highly recommend Sandstone Tours if you are visiting Monument Valley. They are an excellent company with great staff and you can book a tour very easily.

So Worth It!
Sep 2019
Worth time and cost to learn from the guide and be amazed by nature and get to see parts of the valley off limits to visitors otherwise. I'm so glad we did a tour. Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable, pleasant, and funny. I would not only recommend a tour, I would specifically recommend Sandstone. I did an extensive comparison online before our trip and this was best price for us and a great experience with the guide.

Breathtaking Experience
May 2018
While visiting family in 'K-Town' officially known as Kayanta, I decided to take the tour and glad I did, met some beautiful children selling the jewlrey they and their families made. Feel the energy of Monument Valley, time to stop making mouth noise (talking) and soak it all in, views, smells, feeling, colors, history, and allow you mind to get lost in the beauty and experience. Listen to the guide explain the history and each rock has a name - you will not remember them all!

Sunrise Tour
Nov 2018 • Friends
Was cold and windy, luckily this company has enclosed vehicles. (However, my door would not open from inside; driver had to get out to open from outside each time I wanted to get out - which was a lot.) Guide was friendly and shared information about plants and monument names. Patiently waited for photographs to be taken and stopped when asked to take additional photos.

Whatever happened to Cecil?
Jul 2018 • Friends
Having read all of the previous reviews on this site we were delighted to find that our guide was going to be Cecil. Unfortunately, as slightly seasoned travellers we were not surprised when our first stop was the obligatory 'buy your souvenir Navajo jewelry'. However, disappointment really set in when we left in anticipation of hearing the historical and cultural detail that Cecil is celebrated as having in so many of the reviews here, and instead found we were taken to the John Wayne site where Cecil told us that we could stand where The Duke stood and sit on a horse, take photos and then shop for more souvenirs. A this point we explained that we had come to hear about the history and culture of the Navajo tribes (as was advertised) rather than the Hollywood version of the tour. Cecil seemed to understand our wishes, and promised to take us deeper into the park to visit a traditional Navajo family still living in the area. We were also to see petroglyphs. We moved on to the 'family' visit. This provided Cecil with an opportunity to sit back and do nothing for at least 20 minutes, apart from point out the donation box prominently positioned at our feet. He encouraged us to ask as many questions as we wanted, even after it was clear that we were aware of time running out. We were never taken to see the petroglyphs.

Cecil's main skill was reading the wooden signs bearing the names of the places as we arrived at each place of interest. At no point did he offer any further illumination of their significance to the Navajo culture unless we asked pointed questions, and even then he struggled to say anything of interest or that demonstrated his advertised knowledge. In fact, he seemed to be very ill informed about the most basic symbols of Native American culture: when questioned about the importance of the natural totem pole he struggled to understand the question, and claimed that no totem poles were carved out of wood and no other tribes aside from the Navajo would even know what a totem pole was. At this point, we lost any faith in Cecil's ability to provide even the most basic information.

If what you want is an expensive taxi ride in an open air vehicle where you are never disturbed by any information as you travel, despite there being a speaker in the back of the truck, this is the tour for you.

If what you want is a shopping/famous movie moments photo opportunity, this is the tour for you.

If what you want is an extremely easy-going, non-intrusive, friendly driver who knows where the key sites are, this is the tour for you.

Be very careful to book on-line to avoid being ripped-off at the counter in the car park: you will pay getting on for twice as much at the counter.

We went with a Gouldings tour which offered a leisurely pace and just the right about of information.

Seeing it in person is far better than just in films.

Thoroughly enjoyed sunrise tour
Apr 2018 • Couples
We arranged a private 3-hour sunrise tour. Margie (Blackwater Tours) was our Navajo guide. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip! She drove us to a couple places to have a closer view of some of the sites on the 17-mile public Valley Trail. But we also stopped at numerous places where only a guide can take you... amazing!! We walked in red sand dunes - very fine sand indeed. Margie told us about customs, history, family life growing up - then and now; pointed out plants & their uses; and answered our questions. How she maneuvered her vehicle was incredible! We would highly recommend her!!

The tour was great. But they have to invest in better audio equipment. We could not understand a thing.
