There are as many metaphors to describe what locals call 'down in the Buckskin' as there are people who have been there. I choose the word 'in' because you are literally inside the walls of the world's longest slot canyon.

According to the Bureau of Land Management ('BLM') website, Buckskin Gulch is 16 miles long (around 26 km) from the Buckskin Trailhead to the Paria Canyon and over 500 feet (around 150m) deep at its confluence with the Paria River. There are places in the Buckskin where you are able to touch both canyon walls at the same time.

Buckskin Gulch is a photographer's and hiker's Mecca. Every corner you turn is changing continuously; the cliffs are water-and-wind-sculpted patterns of colors, light and shadows. You may also marvel and puzzle at the meanings of the rock writings (petroglyphs) from the early Archaic period (some are as old as 9,000 years).

It was voted one the top 10 hikes in the world by National Geographic Adventure Magazine a few years back.

What an amazing hike! Make sure you are prepared with good footwear and water. Temperature definitely drops in the canyon. Put it on your bucket list

When I encountered the drop I decided to turn around and go out to the beginning of the slot canyon trail. There are rock cairns on the right side. You just go up and over the ridge. It’s safe and easy. I am including a few photographs of the canyon from above and on the other

Our family of 3 (mom, dad, tween) drove from Kanab to the parking lot after stopping first in Kanab at the Visitor's Center to get exact directions, info, etc. We had a rented GMC Acadia which served us fine getting there. We decided the day before to not even try to get a

We only hiked in a few hours had snacks and came back but it was amazing. We headed out early so it was a bit chilly in the canyon but warmed up nicely as we went. It is simply beautiful to stop and take in all the formations and size of the place. Hopefully we'll come back

We loved this slot canyon. The road to get there is dicey, but we did make it with our van. The hike though the canyon is extremely scenic. There is one 8 foot boulder. There was a ladder the day we were there, but sometimes it is not there. Highly recommend hiking this!
