Due to Covid many visitor centers were closed along our route at least this one was open. We didn’t find it very helpful. I’m sure if we had specific questions they may have been able to answer them. We chose some brochures and the gentleman working in there told hubby he took his truck on this drive all the time. Based on that info we struck out for that trail, Peek-a-boo Slot Canyon. Mistake. Unless you have a Jeep or ATV I would not recommend this trail. We were in a 4wd full size pickup truck. The road is deep sand most of the way, large rocks, narrow passages next to rock walls or between hills and trees. You have to watch for road markers to stay on the route. It was nerve wracking to say the least. Bad advice for a local working a visitor center. The do have single stall restroom, a few items for sale including cold drinks and offered free coffee and postcards.

The guy who we talked to was rude to us from the get go. Condescending and unfriendly. We explained we have a permit and were looking for a map. The other guys seemed very friendly and helpful to visitor. To the guy that helped- it’s literally your job to be helpful. We were polite and you are a jerk.

On the way to Kanab, there are 3 or 4 Visitors Center. Each one have special displays. Whether it’s about the animal, the Indians or the dinosaurs...these are cool 30-40 minute breaks on the drive and quite informative.

The folks at the visitor center were extremely welcoming, gracious and helpful. They took us around all the exhibits and took their time making suggestions and answering questions. Greatly enhanced our four day stay in Kanab. Thank you.

The little town of Kanab, Utah is a hidden gem in southern Utah that is a must see for movie buffs. The town and its surrounding landscape has been the setting for hundreds of westerns. Make sure to stop at the visitors center in town and ask about the Johnson Canyoun self guided tour. You'll feel yourself fading into the movie landscape. Great fun.

We had been to Page, Arizona, to see Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon and to kayak in the Glen Canyon Recreation area.
On the way to Bryce and Zion National Parks, we passed through Kanab.
The Kanab Visitor Center is located in the center of town, across from the Hampton Inn and on the route to Bryce.
The colorful murals adorning the outside of this unique visitor center will immediately attract your attention.
Before you even go into the visitor center, take a stroll around the building and check out the murals of various Hollywood sets. If you are a photographer, the entire visitor center, both on the outside and the inside, presents many opportunities for cute family shots.
Lupie Sandavol was our 'information hostess' and she was a veritable fountain of knowledge, not only about Kanab and its immediate environs, but of the entire area.
I had found some information on the internet about a little known gem of a hike in the Red Rock Canyon area (on Highway 12, on the road to Bryce, not the one with a similar name in Vegas). It was called the Arches Trail and sounded amazing.
I asked Lupie about it. Without the wonderful printout and directions she provided, we would not have located the entrance to the hike, which was on an unpaved spur road off of Highway 12.
That hike was one of the highlights of our trip, and I have written a review with details and pictures.
The inside of this visitor center has a number of well staged Hollywood themed exhibits, as many movies were filmed in this area.
So, though Kanab is relatively small and this is the Kanab Visitor Center, I would recommend that anyone passing by on their way to any of the sites in the area should stop by. The 'information hosts', as their cards indicate, possess a wealth of information about things to see and do in the entire area.

We visited the Visitor Center several times. Bob and he rest of the staff gave us excellent ideas for hikes and other activities. They have wonderful handouts for activities and places. Because of them we saw sights we might have missed.

Over the years, my wife and I have gained a growing admiration for visitor centers. Some are better than others, of course, but all are dedicated to providing tourists with as much information as they can about their community or area. They are in the business of selling you a product and, in most cases, they are very good at it. We love to stop at visitor centers that provide a wealth of brochures on local attractions and advise on the best restaurants and out-of-the-way and relatively unknown but very interesting things to see. If you are traveling to southwestern Utah, be sure to stop at the Kanab Visitor Center. Located at 7f45 East Highway 89, it is the base camp for visiting 11 natural wonders within a 90-mile drive of Kanab, including Bryce Canyon, Zion and Grand Canyon National Parks. It also is the headquarters for the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. It is a great place to talk to staff, ask questions, get answers and learn about the local geology and archaeology. In addition to a well stocked book store, the Kanab Visitor Center also features a topographical relief model of the monument, archeology exhibits and a geologic cross-section mural. Be sure to ask for maps, recent road conditions and weather reports. Plan a trip--where to see fossils, where to see stunning fall colors, where to see birds blanketing the autumn sky, where to hike a short distance, where to enjoy fall mountain biking, where to find the best campsites, how to arrange a rafting excursion, the best places for wildlife viewing, the best places to stay, the best restaurants, the best scenic drives. This is the kind of information you will want to collect as you organize the time you have to see it all.

We happened to go here for the North Coyote Buttes lottery. We found displays of interesting information about the area. The staff were very helpful. We had a difficult time finding it because the building was marked with "geological and archaeological exhibits" rather than "Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument visitor center" which was the name we were looking for. It did have "visitor center" by the driveway. The hotel next door pointed us to it.

We are visiting Kanab & Zion area mid September and would like to see some Slot Canyons. We have been to Page before and seen Antelope Slot Canyons. Some of the ones around Kanab seem difficult to get to or you need a 4 wd car. Any suggestions which ones would be best to visit. Thanks from David & Linda .

I would go to the Tourist Center in Kanab; an older man there was very knowledgeable about the area and should be able to direct you for correctly for the weather conditions in the area at the time you are there.

How long does it take to hike to the wave?
Written March 4, 2018
we didn't stay long enough. Winter conditions prevented much hiking for us. Sorry I can't answer your question.
