We stayed at the Green River KOA and would never had known about Swasey's Beach except for a typed up list of things to do in the area by the bathroom. Very very nice. The kids were able to swim and I was able to chill out in the camp chair. We planned to go back the next day but ran out of time. I would love to go back with a picnic and spend the day. The scenery is beautiful. Don't miss this!

Use Green River as your base with cheap clean hotel accommodation. The “Beach” is a few miles outside of town. The road starts as highway, morphs into gravel and then becomes dirt complete with potholes. Don’t let the road conditions deter you so long as you are in a car.. You will encounter some peace and solitude, beautiful scenery and camping facilities ( the payment is on the honor system). The campsite and beach are isolated but delightful. The “ocean” is actually the Green River. Depending on time of year you visit it can be tranquil or raging, but the fishing is good.As part of the visit don’t miss the abandoned stone cabin close by and for more adventuresome individuals keep driving along the dirt road to enjoy beautiful vistas and increasing solitude.

I feel like most people are in Green River as a sort of "passing through" town to get to the next destination. But Green River has some really beautiful things to offer. One of the most surprising, in my opinion, is Swasey's Beach area! It offers a nice day or afternoon playing riverside. It has a great sandy beach area and some trees for shade a pitching a hammock. It is down Hastings Road from the main drag of Green River and about 8-10 miles down a mostly paved farm road. Plenty of space, not super crowded:)

One of Green River's best kept secrets, this beach is ideal for camping, BBQing, sunbathing, swimming (kids need life vests!), and basking in the glory of the magnificent Book Cliffs. Even in the colder months, the beach is a wonderful place to explore Lower Gray Canyon, and Big Horned Sheep can be spotted in the Spring.

This beach is spectacular on the Green River. It is at the base of the Book Cliffs south of Lower Gray Canyon which is famous for it's white water rafting. The beach is a great place to play in the summer and you are able to take unbelievable sunset pictures there.

It is all about perception. Compared to the Northeast, the river is muddy and not that fast moving. The rocks are smaller and so are the rapids. It is a nice paddle. The recommended trip is from Nefertiti to Swasey's Beach, but you can go to the State Park. Nice scenery and a different experience from the Northeast. We could use our own 4 wheeler as the shuttle which doubled the fun. It was similar to our experience in the upper Colorado. I can't wait to see what happens when the two rivers combine.

Keep going north on Hastings road it will turn to dirt and then you will see the boat launch and beach, keep going and you will find the nicest little campground right on the Green River. The restrooms were horrible, dirty. But sit at a table under the trees next to the River and just enjoy the sound of the rapids and the peace of this place.

After a long day on the road this is the perfect place to chill out.
On the east side of Green River take Hastings road about eight miles north. The campground is located about half a mile past the end of the paved road. Our favorite, Campsite 12, is slightly elevated and offers a view of the rapids against a backdrop of Gunnison Bute. There are no major cities around and it is far enough up the canyon that the night sky is free from light pollution.

Nice little river beach. The river is quite cool in the spring, when I was there, the water temperature was 54 degrees and the air temperature was 85 degrees fahrenheit. Children and adults who are poor swimmers, should use a life vest, since there is a variable current and no lifeguards.

Nice beach on the Green River. Well maintained dirt road. Places for small trailers and tents among the trees. You can also drown a worm or two

Can you bring a trailer?

Hi, most of the road is fine. The last mile or so into the campground is one lane and gravel. There was a 24' trailer parked in a site next to the river when I was there.
could you bring your own kayaks and float the river?

Hi, I don't see why not. There is no one there to stop you. I do not have experience doing that but it would be fun to put in at Swasey below the rapids there and out at Green River State Park. Maybe talk to the ranger at Green River for better information. Be safe.

Can you reserve camp spots?
PixieC
Tusayan, AZ1,427 contributions
Hi there! Sadly there is no way to "reserve" a space at Swasey's beach for camping for picnicking. But it's rarely too busy for everyone that wants to use it!
Let me know if you want more info, including other camping locations nearby!

Is there a fee for camping at Swasey's campground
Sarah B

Yes, there is $10 camping fee. The fee box is by the information bullentin board. Payment is honor based. Sometimes a camp host will be present on holiday weekends. But most of the time there isn't one.
