About
Hike with us in wild, remote Utah. We’re the authors of "Hiking from Here to WOW: Utah Canyon Country.” But we’ve decrypted many cross-country dayhikes we’ll never publicize. The scenery is national-park quality. And the solitude is delicious. Few hikers realize that Boulder is to slickrock hiking what Moab is to slickrock biking. What they miss here is astonishing. Let us show you.

2 days of hiking with Utah Slick Rock Guides was the highlight of our trip to southern Utah and we highly recommend it if you are in the area. Craig and Skye do an excellent job of asking questions to assess your hiking level and specific hiking interests. They know the area incredibly well and flawlessly guide you through unmarked and minimally travelled areas of Escalante. After spending time in beautiful but very overcrowded Zion, we fully appreciated the peace, tranquility and immense beauty of this less traveled area. We also appreciated all the tips provided by Craig and skye which helped ensure, not just a good hike with them, but a great trip overall.

We came to Boulder/ESCALANTE with our 5 teens and extended family during the height of this wild pandemic in June 2020. Our son was going into his Senior year of HS and we decided to rent and RV and have a safe summer adventure despite the world falling apart.
I came across Skye and Craig’s website looking for a guide because this is a practice we follow wherever we travel as a family. We didn’t want big crowds and we wanted to have a more personalized, interesting experience to engage our teens and ourselves. Craig guided us over 2 days with an additional guide on the second day. She was fantastic too. He also found an exceptional guide Jeff for my brother, wife, and his younger 3 boys. We had an absolute blast. We walked thru water, hiked the Slickrocks, sat in caves, learned a ton about this history of the people who lived long ago. Craig was so engaging and fun. He loved our teens and their curiosity and had an exceptional wealth of knowledge. When my 15 year old daughter seemed a bit tired an overheated at one point, Craig was quick to offer her a natural energy gummy that helped her with the stamina she needed to finish this challenging and fun hike. Craig and Skye wilk cater any hike to the needs of each family or group. We loved that about them. Can’t wait to come back and explore more. What a gorgeous landscape and couple! Thanks again Skye and Craig for an inspiring memorable adventure and for helping us remember natures’ ticket to happiness!

If you want to experience Utah's Slick Rock in Escalante's Grand Staircase, there is no other guides to book your hikes with than Skye and Craig. When we began planning our Utah Road Trip we actually planned our trip around the availability of Skye and Craig and then we secured our lodging.

Full Disclosure: These hikes could not be done without an experience guide. Skye and Craig have a lifetime of experience hiking all over the world. They're among the few who hold a permit issued by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to guide in Grand Staircase—Escalante National Monument. They also completed the Wilderness Emergency First Responder training. THIS is why you book with Utah Slickrock Guides.

Despite our novice abilities, we had complete confidence in our guide, Skye. Even in the middle of a panic attack, she was able to calmly reassure us we were capable of doing this and for that we are forever grateful. She is a beautiful storyteller and educator and we left our two hikes fully enriched by the gift of herself she shares with others.

We hike on a Monday and Wednesday and let her choose the routes. Each day was full of wonder and exploration and we did not see another sole each day except for Craig and his group of two he was guiding and only then we saw them for a few minutes. The landscape will take your breath away, make you feel very small and leave you in AWE.

A few things worth mentioning, when they send you their list of suggested items, read and re-read and get everything on the list. They are the experts. We had a lot of it, and we questioned among ourselves the use of hiking boots on the list and brought our "Altra" trail shoes which we wore on the Camino de Santiago. This was NOT a good choice. You DO need hiking boots that will grip the slick rock. You need hiking poles, you need a large water bladder, and yes, you need a sun shirt and wide brim hat and food to sustain you throughout the day. Needless to say, once home we immediately started researching hiking boots.

We have been home for almost two weeks and still talk about our two days with Skye.

We must have said "look where we are!!" dozens of times during this unforgettable day. These are landscapes know to very few: mind-blowing, heart-opening, awe-inspiring. And it's obvious the care Craig and Skye take to sculpt their hikes, refining their routes to tuck little surprises here and there, varying the rhythms of the day, giving hikers enough space to reflect and wonder while always leading with expertise, confidence, grace and passion. They walk with reverence on the land and—lucky for us—don't mind sharing a few of its secrets.

Craig and Skye were amazing guides. From minute one we felt like we had made some amazing new friends. They catered to our whims and took us through 5 slot canyons all in one fantastic journey across the slickrock beauty of the escalante area. Having been lost in Escalante (and found by a search and rescue guide) I have had experience in the beauty and also the difficulty of navigating this area. A guide is a must and these particular guides are a treat! They took us to amazing places where we could photograph beauty that few have seen. Imagine walking where no footprints have tread before you. This was the beginning of our honeymoon adventures and it was beyond what we had dreamed of. We only wish we would have had enough time to do several more days. There is always our anniversaries!

If you are reading this, just go ahead and book. It is 100% worth it for the beautiful trail and wonderful company.

I traveled to Zion and Bryce national parks with three other friends (all 20 somethings). We were looking for things to do last minute and contacted Craig and Skye. They were able to fit us into their schedule and tailor the hike to our ability.

Craig and Skye are experienced hikers who are always “chasing mountains.” They have spent a significant amount of time exploring Escalante creating hiking routes that feel unexplored by the general public. You will get the most GORGEOUS views that are completely surrounded by the sounds of nature (in comparison to the crowds of people waiting for shuttle tickets at Zion.) Not only do you have wonderful and private views, but your guide is well-versed in information about the land - settlers history, geology, and flora.

The nature views as well as Craig’s company made this experience the highlight of our trip. We were so glad that we booked it and feel strongly that anyone reading this would benefit from booking too!

Sky and Craig set us up perfectly for a beatiful hike in the Escalante slickrock.
We saw no other people and enjoyed perfect peace and quiet during our entire afternoon together. Craig shared his knowledge of the area and answered our questions, was respectful of our needs and wants, all above and beyond our expectations. We could never have had such a fulfilling experience on our own. He also recommended gear for future hikes that we greatly appreciated.

I had the pleasure of hiking for 2 days in a row with Craig and I would very highly recommend the experience. I was a little bit nervous because I was by myself but Craig made me feel very comfortable. It was physically challenging but certainly not too much. Just right... I think we accomplished 2 of his favorite hikes but it’s hard to say because I think he sincerely loves them all 😂 I would love to come back to this stunning area and bring my family to hike with Craig. I highly recommend.

Skye and Craig Copeland lead our group of eight '60s college buddies through the untamed lands around the Escalante River for a fabulous week of trekking through some of the most beautiful and serene country we've been through [members of our group, residing from California to Maine, have been hiking together near-annually for more than 25 years] . More than that, they challenged me, and I believe all eight of us, to exceed our preconceived expectations of our individual abilities in hiking this steep slick rock country, while curating our hikes so as not to put any of us in real danger. In sum, they were/are the perfect guides in this largely unknown and unpopulated country.

My wife and I hiked all day through the amazing Grand Staircase with Craig, our incomparable guide. He not only expertly led us on a route over a continually changing expanse of slickrock with wonder at every turn, but also gave us valuable pointers on hiking best practices and techniques. Craig was very flexible with regard to our abilities and gracefully accommodated my pursuit of photography opportunities (which were endless). To top it all off, he was a great conversationalist and an all around exemplary person. We didn't want it to end, and expect to be back for more Grand Staircase adventures in the future.
