- TravelingMomGrandmaHouston, Texas899 contributionsA Nice Walking Zoo, Can View in 2-3 HoursAt first we were disappointment since the first 2 displays were closed. But that soon changed. The other animals are actually closer to see than we have experienced in other zoos. This zoo does not have tons of each type, maybe 2-3, but they were all out for our viewing. Our day was in the 60's and that helps in Texas. We walked the entire zoo, logged in over 5500 steps so a nice layout. We spent 2 full hours seeing the animals. Children loved the Otters' Slide - The slide is see-through and goes under the water. The otters were eating on top of the slide so the children could see them up close when they slid down. Wheelchairs or knee scooters can be used Area of improvement: Not all of the displays were labeled. There were several where our family and a group of others were trying to figure out what we were seeing. That was a disppointment and huge miss on the zoo's part. Food: TOO Expensive and only pretzels were available (which were the most expensive item on their menu). Bathrooms were clean Staff: We saw very little so can't rate them.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 30, 2024
- Alice S1 contributionA perfect zoo for families of all ages! The orangutans are amazing as are the rhinos, giraffes, otters, tigers and so many more. The exhibits are all well kept, the conservation is excellent and there is lots of shade and places to sit. The penguins are coming in August which will bring many thousands of visitors who will enjoy everything about this truly wonderful zoo.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 16, 2024
- Tom from TexasSan Antonio, Texas236 contributionsNice uncrowded, walkable zoo. Excellent showcase of local species, as well as certain other habitats.Brazos River exhibits of local animals were excellent. The zoo is very walkable and less crowded than other zoos. More effort is made at this zoo to make the habitat similar to the animals’ native habitat. It doesn’t have as many animals as other nearby zoos have, although a large section was under construction.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten June 8, 2024
- YotaPowerGuilford, Maine974 contributionsA well kept zoo with plenty to see and plenty of shade to walk in throughout the zoo. This is a great zoo in a relaxing era of Waco. Although close to the city, it has a country feel as you approach through Cameron Park. There are a few animals we had never seen before and the animals here seemed more active than most zoos we have been too. The elephant was moving and making noises the whole time and we got to see the rhinoceros pull out of the mud and reposition into the shade. Both cool experiences! We would do another visit if in Waco again.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 23, 2024

What an Amazing Zoo!!! The baby orangutan was so entertaining and really engages with you. We came here right when it opened, barely no people. We had some great photo opportunities and time with the animals. Due to it not being crowded. Definitely, an amazing experience.

This is a small, but enjoyable zoo. Anyone who enjoys looking at animals will find almost all of their zoo favorites here: lions, tigers, bears, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, moneys, snakes and more!! It is well laid out and easy to navigate, with the entire facility being ADA accessible! There are lots of picnic areas, pavillions for cooperate gatherings, and outdoor play areas for the kids. HINT: bring your own food and drinks. Offerings inside the zoo and limited at best and expensive.

Lots of shade and indoor A/C areas, but you will still get hot during the summer, bring water and wear sunscreen. Don't miss the red barn building which has nocturnal animals... most people walked by without realizing it was an exhibit with lots of animals you rarely see. The indoor cafe is closed, but the treetop cafe was open with a few covered outdoor seating options. There was ice cream, snack and drink vending machines near the giraffes exhibit, but you can also bring in food and snacks. We did it all in about 3 hours. Head to Jake's Texas Tea house a short 5 minute drive. Kid's meals come in paper Cadillacs (skip the shakes here and order pie!) Gift shop was not as impressive as the Mayborn museum.

I was on a road trip through Waco and decided to stop and see an attraction before I continued on and I am glad I did. It is a beautiful zoo with lots of animals and lots of space where you don’t feel like they are trying to cram a bunch on attractions into a limited space like I have experienced at zoos in other cities. I loved seeing the wide variety of animals and getting to see some that I haven’t see before. It is a great place for any occasion.

It was a hot, muggy day and not all the animals were out, and those that were out were pretty lethargic. Letting the animals stay in their cooler night time areas was the responsible thing to do. The zoo did the right thing for the animals in their care.
They do have a pretty good collection it appears. The only animal that seemed stressed was the bobcat which paced continously.
There were quite a few rest areas with benches, water, and shade, which I appreciated.
The only really negative thing was the turkey vultures. About three is a lifetime supply for being up close to a vulture. Maybe a couple more if you include Andean Condors or California Condors. But there must have been well over 100 turkey vultures roosting in trees over the walkways and on the walkways.

So I should probably preface this review with the fact that our local zoo is the St Louis zoo – which is free and always one of the top zoos in the nation. We love visiting other zoos though to check them out. The layout of the zoo is nice – plenty of room to walk and lots of shade. I’ve never seen a zoo with so little refreshments or food stands though – it was a hot day when we were there and it was quite a ways before we found a place to buy a drink. In our opinion several of the enclosures were extremely small for the animals and by the amount of pacing of the animals you could tell a lot of them were anxious in their spaces. My kids noticed that several of the animals seemed thin – this could be the time of year with losing their winter coats, etc but it was noticeable. An extremely crazy amount of vultures in the park – which is explained. All in all it made for a couple hour stop during our day but I can’t say I would necessarily recommend it.

Our first visit to Cameron Park Zoo was Labor Day, 9.10.21. It is an excellent zoo. Just the right size to explore in 3 hours. It was hot, but there are a lot of trees and indoor exhibits. Great for families! We bought the family membership with AZA network reciprocal admission to other zoos and will definitely be back.

Yes. Throughout the zoo, you will find trees covering the walkways, and in a number of places, benches convenient for a brief rest I would say it is the shadiest zoo I have visited.

How long does it take to see everything? And do you have any specific advice for a family with children 5 and 8 years old?

I would agree with all, 2 hours is a good amount of time. Can you walk through the whole thing in an hour, yes. But to stop and watch, play on the slides and stuff, maybe have a drink on the deck... Two hours plus. If you have more time and are in the area Cameron Park which the zoo is in, is very pretty along the river. You can park in the Redwood shelter and walk towards the river into the woods, will make sense if you are there, and walk the trails. My kids always liked that. Disc golf is also down there as is a big play ground. All free. Great spot for a picnic lunch. Which if you forgot there are food trucks up by the suspension bridge, maybe a mile down stream. All reachable on a very nice walking sidewalk along the river. Which you can take all the way to the new Baylor stadium.... Tired yet? Your kids will be! Come on down.
