We saw the Nutcracker during the time the Houston Ballet performed at Smart Financial and it was wonderful. The venue was fantastic.

The ballet was fine, parts really good. The sound system was not good at all. The seats are difficult to negotiate while dodging cup holders attached to the seats in front of you and people seem to find it okay to get up and down during the performance. I don't know why there are ushers. Multiple mobile phones recorded the entire performance and some even just played a game or two. Expensive cheap food crunched and frothed around us. I will not go back and can not even fathom I paid that much for tickets to attend the equivalent of a high school football game. The Smart Financial Centre did not pay the performers the respect they deserved and is a disaster of a venue for ballet, or any musical production really given the sound system.

The only thing to know about this venue is that parking is horrible. Think about the worst parking experience you have ever experienced and multiply it by 10. Please plan to arrive early!

First the performance of the Nutcracker itself was wonderful. This venue and the way it operates is AWFUL! We had pre-paid parking and had to wait and wait in a long line to get into the parking lot and be allowed to park. Then the lines were way out top the door and down the sidewalk to get in. The lines barely moved and security was ridiculous. There were no signs or personnel posted to tell people what they couldn’t take into the building. Once you finally got up to the metal detectors, then tons of people were told they could not take their water containers, and a myriad of other normal stuff people bring with them. I had to take my iPad back to yonder Egypt, where our car was parked, as I was told by a huge manly looking woman that I was not allowed to bring that in. I have had no trouble taking it in at the Merrell Center, or any other place I have gone previously. The back up going through security was mostly due to these surprises the security people were dropping on ticket holders as they tried to go through the detectors. People with non allowable items, had to elbow their way back out, through the line, and then walk back to their vehicles. Then when they got back they had to stand in line again, and go through the entire process all over, for a second time. We ended up missing the first 10-15 minutes of the performance along with quite a few others, due to the screening process and ridiculously long lines. It was also very warm in the theater, it was like they waited for everyone to get in there, and then turned on the AC. I doubt that we will return to this venue. If we do go again, we will go at least an hour earlier. We did get there earlier this time, but you need much more time than at a normal venue due to the way the staff operates. Think twice about heading here, and if you do, pack your patience.

We went to see the Pentatonix Christmas show at Smart Financial Centre. Parking was disorganized and a little chaotic. There's no main booth to drive through where you pay the parking fee, just several men standing around collecting money as you drive through. One knocked on our window and asked for fifteen dollars which we paid, and then a couple of minutes later another knocked on our window and asked for fifteen dollars. He seemed confused that we had already paid. Tickets were fairly expensive so complimentary parking would have been appreciated. You can pay for parking ahead of time which is what we would do next time. The show was scheduled to begin at 7:00 so we decided to just climb the several flights of stairs to the upper level and use the restrooms there before the show. Once reaching the top we discovered there were no restroom facilities on our level at all. We asked, and they said we had to go back down to the lower level. What a weird way to design a new facility, not very convenient, especially for anyone who might have special needs. We didn't think we had time so we hurried to our seats only to find the show starting 45 minutes late. Once it began we were really impressed with the performance and thought the acoustics were wonderful; the music was amazing, and the concert was interactive and a lot of fun. There was an intermission but they didn't say how long it would be so we rushed downstairs to the restroom facilities; lines were really long since people from multiple levels had to use the same facilities. Overall we really enjoyed the show, but everything seemed disorganized and poorly designed - a few lessons learned for the next time we go back. Food and cocktails were available on the bottom level, but again nothing on the upper level where our seats were located.
