About
Ila Loetscher, the "Turtle Lady of South Padre Island", originally formed our organization to save the Kemp's ridley sea turtle in 1977. Now we are a sea turtle hospital with a mission to rehabilitate and release any injured sea turtles, increase awareness concerning their safety and habitat, and assist with conservation efforts for all sea turtle species. We are funded by donations, grants and gift shop proceeds-- For rehabilitated sea turtle and hatchling release text message notifications, please see our website membership page. See you at Sea Turtle, Inc.!

- cat womanAtlanta, Georgia21 contributionsGood work being done with this OrgSea Turtle Inc does great work to rehabilitate and re-release sea turtles into the ocean. If you get a chance to watch one of their release events of turtles back into the ocean: go - it is very cool. The actual location is less cool than expected, but beautiful sites from the surrounding boardwalk and a great learning experience for the youngins especially. It's not expensive to go to and it feels good to give to an organization making such a concerted effort to positively impact our eco system.Written January 8, 2023
- UKChiefBeloit, Wisconsin59 contributionsNeat place and very informative!March 2021 Visit. Sea Turtle Inc is a refuge and hospital for sea turtles with various tanks, different turtles to see, an informational talk, a little museum, and gift shop. It's on the main strip, across from the Hilton/LaQuinta and easy to access (like most things in SPI). Would make for a nice short walk if you were staying close. We went as soon as it opened up on a weekday to avoid any crowds and that worked well. They also have an informational talk in their amphitheater just a little after opening, so it made it easy to attend that as well as see the turtles. Very cheap entry. We definitely didn't know that much about sea turtles and being there just after the cold snap that hit Texas this year, it was certainly interesting to hear the stories about rescuing turtles. I bought some gifts for mementos and to be able to help support the effort. Wear comfortable shoes. Know that this is not very interactive, as the turtles are in tanks and are there because they have been injured or have some illness. No touching. Sorry, kids. It is still a great place to visit for an hour or two and learn about the animals with a great mission. Worth a visit!Written May 28, 2021
- Cara J9 contributionsVisit with the turtlesThis was our second year visiting Sea Turtle Inc. Our family loves the history of this place and all of the good they do for the sea turtles and sea life in general. It was super rainy all day so they had the turtle talk inside the Resident's hall - which was a little hard to hear due to the echo. But we learned about each of the residents. We were saddened to hear one of them passed away in June - but he had a good life there at Sea Turtle Inc. We also happened upon Christmas in July and the kids got to talk to Santa! He was vacationing in South Padre! Such a fun surprise.Written July 16, 2021

Don’t expect a computerized museum. It is turtle rescue attractions with rescued turtles in tanks. Most are turtles that are injured or were stranded. They are being cared for until they are returned to the sea. Sadly some of them would never survive if they were returned. They are thus permanent resident. Each turtle has its on story which is movingly described on its tank.

We were four adults that visited this center. Admission to the center during winter is $6/adult, $5/senior or military and less for children. Due to Covid, masks were required and they accepted transactions by credit/debit card only. The day of our visit the restrooms were closed due to a water problem and they offered no direction for another option so some in our party had to leave and come back. This was unfortunate. The center is not very big but you can see some displays about the different sea turtle species and see them in the tanks. Seeing the 4 turtles was the most interesting part. The talk by staff told the purpose of the center and how they did rehabilitation for injured or sick turtles. The lecture was done by a woman who spoke so fast with a poor microphone that it was difficult to understand her. There is a gift shop on the premises. Overall the visit was ok, we spent at least 45min here.

We stopped by hear to learn about the turtles and got an education to remember. All the staff and workers were very informed and knew so much about the environment and turtles. The lady who did the presentation in the auditorium was amazing and made it such an enjoyable learning experience. There was so much to see from the gift shop, tanks, rehab area we were there over an hr with a low cost per person to support a non profit for turtles! This is an can't miss stop if your visiting SPI!

This was not a free experience. We paid $26 for 4 adults to self guide around swimming pools of giant turtles. While the information was interesting, it wasn’t spellbinding and I would not pay again unless the grandkids wanted to see it.

Our family really enjoyed Sea Turtle Inc. We have 2 children ages 6 and 13. We spent nearly 3 hours there and learned a lot about sea turtles and rescue efforts. The volunteers were patient and enthusiastic about educating us and we thoroughly enjoyed watching the majestic turtles swim in their pools. The facility is clean and well kept. The cost to enter is so cheap for such a wonderful experience and the gift shop prices were decent too. I highly recommend Sea Turtle Inc!

Cheap entry free may look small building and run down but their in the process of renovating it. We were both amazed on how much we learned and the work this center does definitely a must see on the island was happy to contribute and buy from their gift shop to assist in any way possible. The educational show was very informative. The resident turtles are amazing to watch and read about their stories. Spread awareness on how fragile our marine life is and how careless we are. Can’t say enough about turtle inc other than thank you for amazing work everyone does and it’s a must see will not regret it.

This was a really wonderful and insightful experience. Each turtle had a story clearly posted and we loved all the names. The kids learned so much and the speaker was perfect. The sea turtles captured our heart and weeks later we’re still talking about it. Our personal favorite is Fred. I can’t wait to see the new hospital when it’s done and we plan to contribute annually to help with the conservation efforts.

the facility has improved from the last time we visited a few years ago. its a short tour and this is more for younger children who would be amazed by the turtles. we went with two teenage children and they still loved watching the turtles and appreciated the cause of the organization helping out these injured turtles. they loved the viewing tanks and saw huge turtles swimming. sometimes you cant see the turtles in the tank b/c they are in the back of the tanks and water is kind of murky.

This is a must do on the island. There is a hospital with turtles that are being rehabbed. There are also permanent resident turtles that cannot be released into the wild. One of the turtles has a prosthetic to help her swim. The education center is awesome. This was a lot of fun for the family.

This place is amazing, and the people here are just angels, simply for what they do to help these beautiful creatures.
They are extremely pet friendly and welcomed my fur baby Lexa into the facilities with open arms.
They have the section of the facility that is the sea turtle hospital, you can view the turtles and read about their stories and the care they are receiving and their is a section that the permanent resident sea turtles are living, these are the turtles that can't be released back into the wild. They will also give a presentation every hour or so in a large auditorium.
Make sure you visit and buy something at the gift shop, I've read that this place is reliant on the proceeds of the gift shop sales and the entry fee. The pet shop is also pet friendly.

I'm not sure. In the summer we used to go in the mornings as the humidity was high in the old facility. We went early afternoon in the new facility but it was October. It was comfortable and not too crowded. I think it depends on the time of year.
