Excellent Paleontology Museum!!
Jan 2020 • Couples
If you like paleontology, general dinosaurs, and amphibians/reptiles/synapsids of the Permian then this place is for you and a must-see. We were highly impressed with the museum exhibits, paleo lab and research program. A+ all they way around. Staff were very friendly and gave us a tour of the lab where a few people were working on Dimetredon fossils. They were renovating their Pleistocene/modern animals exhibit so we didn’t see that, need to go back!

This is a wonderful dinosaur museum!!! They celebrated 5 years today with a huge celebration. It has several dinosaur replicas built from pieces found close to Seymour. Great for kids and adults!!!

small but interesting

This is a relative new museum - celebrating 5 years in 2019. It is not very large and will not take long to see it all but it is well laid out and has great explanations for its displays.

Much like Dimetrodon, this Museum is a little known treasure in North Central Texas.

This is by far one of the best, if not the best, small town unknown museum I've ever been to. It's very professionally done. You might think you're in a wing of a much larger museum with a much larger budget. Chris Fils, the museum director, spent a great deal of time with me and my daughter showing us the behind the scenes workings. I'm sure he'd give you the same treatment. This is a must see! Dimetrodon has always been my favorite prehistoric creature since seeing him in a book as a kid. The hair on my arms stood up when Chris allowed me and my daughter to touch actual Dimetrodon bones still in the museum lab. Thank you Chris! Another great feature is that unlike massive museums where you might feel rushed, this one is bite-sized and you can linger and absorb the information. When you're finished you feel like you nailed it...you really were able to take in everything the museum had to offer. We'll be back for sure.

A Big Step Back in Time
Mar 2019 • Family
Step into the Whiteside Museum in Seymour Texas, and you will see a huge painting of what it looked like 290, million years ago. They have several active dig sites, which means the museum is always evolving, it is never stagnant, like many other museums. My most recent trip, yesterday was with my daughter, & 11, year old granddaughter. We all love this place, especially my granddaughter who has in the past actually helped working on some of the dimatrodin bones. I feel sure I spelled this wrong. Anyway, this task of working on these bones, hundred’s of millions of years old, was not lost on my granddaughter. She talks about this often. The Whiteside Museum is well worth the visit, as well as the music garden right across the street.

Must stop!

I did not know about this place until we ran out of gas in Seymour.

Who knew that the area around is one of the best Permian dig sites in the world!

The museum has excellent displays on dinosaurs and other animals that lived in the area. They also have displays with live lizards, snakes and toads.

But by far the best is the people that work here. Every employee interacted with us and told us something new. They let us look around the lab and explained how the bones get cleaned, etc.

I even got to touch a dimetrodon tooth!

Oh - the shop has cool stuff too!

Terrific museum - we'll definitely worth the drive!
Sep 2017 • Family
This was a fun visit for the adults as well as even the 5 and 7 year old children with us! Really interesting that most of the museum fossils came from 5-10 miles away and that they are still digging and finding more! Going into the lab was especially interesting and the staff gave detailed explanations of what they were working on. Our tour guide in the museum was the paleontologist, Chris, making our visit all the more special! Worth the visit even without any children with you!
Aside from fossils, they also had a beautiful collection of African antelope and water buffalo as well as a nice collection of animals found in the Texas wilds as well as domesticated ranch animals. The children loved the live lizards at the museum.
We will definitely return. Very nice gift shop too.(Admission is free for military - thank you Whiteside.)
Across the street is the Seymour Sound Garden - amazingly fun place to picnic before or after the museum!

Great West Texas Dino Museum
Sep 2017 • Family
A fantastic museum for kids with a very warm and knowledgeable staff. It's particularly interesting that many of the fossils come from just a few miles away. The kids also liked the live animal displays and getting to pet a couple of lizards. Along with the exhibits, you can go to the fossil lab and see how fossils are extracted, cleaned, and catalogued. We spent a little over an hour and it was well worth the time. If you need to break up the drive through west Texas, this is a great stop.
