The Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce offers a guided tour of the local area Czech and German Communities and the beautiful Painted Churches. Or guide Linda rode in our vehicle, ate lunch with us and regaled us a living history lesson on the people who settle here from Europe. She was knowledgeable on the religious history, the contents of the church and the local priests. She knew the early farming crops pre and post the railroad presence and current issues. It was a lovely afternoon. Always go with a guide!

Time constraints prohibited us from taking the guided tour so we decided to take a chance and try to visit the 2 churches closest to us. As luck would have it, we arrived during the guided tour of one of the churches. Did not intrude but listened as we viewed the incredible art and beautiful colors inside. Rivals European churches of note. The guide was very knowledgable and took her time explaining in detail specifics about the church. I need to go back and take the guided tour so that I can visit more of these gorgeous churches.

Lead our photography club on this tour. We had two great leaders, Karen and Terry, both from the area and very knowledgable. Fortunate to tour 6 Painted Churches on our all day event, crisscrossing country roads, the Piano Bridge, and beautiful pastures. THIS TOUR IS A MUST DO! Words do not express the art, stained glass, sanctuaries, and sense of presence of the Lord these churches provide. Simply stunning, each in a unique way. You will not be disappointed and taking the tour is the way to go. Some of these churches you cannot get into without a guide. Price is very reasonable. Contact the Chamber of Commerce in Schulenburg for details. In the spring, expect larger crowds, yet some bluebonnets if your timing is right. Enjoy!

On Tuesday, February 25, 2020, we stopped at the Schulenburg Chamber to purchase the self-guided tour map ($5). For the four of us, we thought driving to and visiting the churches on our own would fit our schedule better than a guided tour. We were able to visit all the churches and cemeteries listed. The historical information included on the map was helpful. All the churches were unique and beautiful inside.

We scheduled a tour of the painted churches through the Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce. Naomi greeted us at the chamber and was so very nice and helpful. So much so that I asked if I could take her photo.

Terry was our docent/tour guide and she was fantastic. She is a retired Texas history and American history teacher, so it doesn’t get much better than that, but it did. Terry is also a longtime practicing Catholic (we are not Catholic), so she had a lot of additional insight into the practices and insights of the Catholic religion.

You follow Terry in your own car. The drive alone from church to church is also part of the fun.

We went to four churches. In Dubina, Praha, High Hill and Moravia. I could not pick a favorite. All were beautiful.

Please, please, please take the tour through the chamber and ask for Terry. Going on your own, you may not be able to get inside the churches, and even if you luck out and get in, you will not get the incredible insight Terry gives.

I highly recommend booking a tour to see the Painted Churches near Schulenburg. Our guide Natalie shared not only the history of the churches but also the significance of the symbols of the Catholic Church as seen in the statues, paintings, and stained glass. Even though I had visited these churches several times in the past, my experience was greatly enhanced by Natalie’s knowledge and gracious, welcoming personality. Thank you, Natalie! And many thanks to the work of the church parishes who keep up the buildings and make them available to the public to be enjoyed. I will continue to support them through their church picnics. I hope you will too!

We visited three painted churches near Schulenburg, another in Praha, and one in Shiner. They all are beautiful in different ways. They are easily a day trip from San Antonio and Houston via I-10. They're closed on Sunday but open the rest of the week.

Some things to note: If you get a tour guide, their fee is $60 total. If there are just two people or probably more, it's still $60 from what we understood. And then it's $22 a person for the tour. There are restrooms at each church in case that is important to you. Our tour guide was Reverend Andrew S. and he was very good and knowledgeable. We toured all 6 churches and since there were just two of us and Andrew it took about 3.5 hours. But if you go with a large group and see all 6 churches, it will take all day. Looking back now, we think we could have been fine seeing the 3 most ornate churches and skipping the rest. The last two churches on the 6 church tour were not ornate like the rest so they could be easily skipped and they aren't open to the public. You can tour the rest on your own but it was nice having a tour guide to tell us about each church and we would have had a hard time finding them on our own. You can get a tour guide and just see fewer churches but not sure what the difference would be in cost. You start the tour at the Chamber of Commerce and if this is important to you, they do have a restroom there also. If you do the longer tour with a large group, you break for lunch and then restart the tour. Since it was just the two of us, we were done in time for lunch. It is good to bring your own snacks and water on the tour.

Texas has a substantial Central European influences. German and Czech immigrants settled in central and west Texas during the 19th century .Part of their legacy are the painted churches of Texas. The new arrivals stuggling to stablish new lives could not reproduce the grand cathedrals of their homelands. Instead they erected  wooden and brick churches  They renderd  the interiors with painted architectural details they could not build. Thirty one of these churches are scattered across Texas some of the most memorable are in and around Schulenberg. The exteriors are simple but the interiors are master works of color and design.

A lovely day out driving in the rolling countryside and some very beautiful churches. The cost is reasonable, $12 per person and a tip for the guide which for our group was $5 each. Not sure if that is standard or based on group size but we had 14 people.
