The grand kids, their parents and us grandparents enjoyed the hands on crafting and visits with craft experts, visits to the historical homes and Shakespear shorts from several plays the UT students are working on for the summer season.

Finally made the drive out to Round Top for a UT production of a Shakespearean play at Winedale. Living in Austin I had heard about the venue and program for several years, but never committed to making the drive to this "barn" for a production. It was really excellent. Despite very hot weather, there were fans to keep us comfortable. As the venue is small, the production had an intimate feel, and as the venue is literally in the middle of the field, there was a rustic, Texas feel to the whole evening. I saw a production of Love's Labour's Lost, a play in which I had once appeared, so I knew it well. The Winedale's rendition was a hilarious romp that would have done the Bard proud. It did not take itself too seriously, as it should not with this completely silly play full of puns, word play and bawdy humor. Bravo!

This is truly a unique experience out in the pastures of Fayette County Texas. There are homes, demonstrations at certain times of the year, gardens and examples of a by gone time. The Austin UT students perform several Shaespearian plays in the barn. They help make their own props and costumes. The students come from all fields of study...you don't have to be a drama major. Previous years' students love to come back for the performances and to share with the teaching staff. The performances are top notch!

I love Winedale because it has a bit of everything. Wonderful Texas vernacular architecture, including an original stagecoach stop with hotel, some neat 1800s German houses. They also host great events like Shakespeare at Winedale and an old fashioned Christmas celebration. If you want the tour, call in advance.
