The captain made sure that everyone had a terrific time. He identified almost all of the birds seen while on the trip and would maneuver the boat so we could see and photograph. He gave us information about the various land formations and history of the area. His second mate, delivered warm coffee, tea, water or hot chocolate about the time when everyone needed something warm. The boat had a large indoor area for traveling out and back. The area up top and the front of the boat had plenty of room for everyone to move about, watch, and take pictures of the spendor of Aransas NWR. We had 17 Whooping Cranes on our trip including 3 juveniles.

Captain Tommy and his first mate aboard the Skimmer provide an outstanding birding and natural history experience. Captain Tommy started the tour on the dock by welcoming us and letting us all know that Whooping Cranes are not "guaranteed" until November 15, and that although we still had a chance of seeing them, we could walk away right then if we wanted to. Nobody did! Over the next three hours Captain Tommy delivered the full package - a fantastic interpretive experience, some mammal encounters including five coyotes and small pod of bottlenose dolphins, and great views of 34 species of birds - including five different Whooping Cranes! This was my second trip aboard the Skimmer and I would not hesitate to do the trip again. Highly recommended!

This was one of the most enjoyable excursions I have experienced. The boat was spacious and very clean. The captain and 1st mate were gracious and friendly. During the the tour we were able to see a wide variety of bird species, but for me the number of whooping cranes and their close proximity was very special. We were also able to enjoy the antics of a small pod of bottlenose dolphins. The tour included a variety of snacks and beverages and binoculars available for those who didn't bring their own. Captain Tommy proved to be very knowledgeable about the area history and development, as well as the various species of birds, fish and other wildlife. He was constantly scanning for interesting wildlife and terraine and quick to point out his obervations.

I highly recommend this tour, not only for visitors, but for locals who have not been able to enjoy our beautiful coastal landscapes and wildlife.

I won this adventure in a fundraiser and was looking forward to going for a while. We We made a last minute booking for a Sunday trip and grabbed our binoculars. It was a bit cold but I loved being on the top of the boat as we spent the time getting to the Wildlife refuge. The Captain gave us lots of information about the path we took, beginning of the trip by checking temps and hand sanitizers. Masks were optional pointed out landmarks and was very professional. Precautions were taken at the and many wore them the entire time.
We were able to get "up close and personal" to the whooping crane and watch them feed on the blue crab, etc. The captain pointed out various other species along the way, spotting then and identifying them for those not well informed . We also got the treat of watching the dolphins play in the wake of the boat. had been putting it off because of Covid but decided that it was time to check it out.
I would go again on this excursion as I feel each time you would become better at spotting the differences in the species.
The crew offered coffee or cold drinks and snacks, nice touch. Dress accordingly -you can always sit inside on the bottom level if the day is cool.

This was a fantastic opportunity to see endangered Whooping Cranes in the wild, closer up than you can get on your own! Captain Tommy pointed out many other bird species throughout the tour as well, as well as some dolphins. The Whooping Cranes are the star of the show, and the boat stayed for quite awhile at the closest spot to them so we could watch a territorial dispute that was going on between two pairs. Plenty of time to take pictures, and the first mate was very attentive making sure everyone was comfortable. It's nice that the tour starts at a coffee spot so you can get an espresso to go before taking off, too (and there are bathrooms on the boat!). Very fun outing!

Awesome, awesome, awesome. We came to the Port Aransas area to find whooping cranes. We found them. But on this boat trip we also found so much more. Captain Tommy knows his birds. He had about 10 bird ID's for us before we even left the harbor. We saw a group of 9 young adult cranes that was wonderful. Overall we saw at least 30 Whooping cranes. We also saw dolphins and a coyote and 38 other species of birds. None of the cranes were especially close, but at the end we were able to watch a crane pair with their young colt that were close enough to get some nice photos. I don't know how long he had us parked there to watch, but I was so appreciative of the long, long look. It was so amazing to watch these rare birds doing their thing in their own environment. There was no time table on this tour. He took as long as it needed to give us a good experience. Plus I bought some nice professional photos of the cranes as well from the gift shop. It was a wonderful experience.

They do go rain or shine or freezing temps. It started out a little cold, but thankfully warmed up by the end of the tour. What they don't do is go without enough guests. We had our first scheduled tour cancelled due to not enough people. So keep some flexibility in your plans if this is what you came to do.

If you like being on the water, if you want to see the whooping cranes closer than you typically can, this is a very reasonable way to go. Captain Tommy kept up a running identification of all the birds we saw (many of which we couldn’t have id’ed by ourselves, and assistant Meghan was great, too. For $85 and 3 hours, we’ll worth it!

Excellent overall boat tour. The weather was cool and the sky was blue. Our captain and tour guide said he was a biologist with Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi and was subbing for the usual lady captain giving her a break. The boat was a double decker with lots of room for seating and an upper deck for viewing. The boat motor was quiet as we ease to stops along the intercostal canal allowing us not to spook a single whooping crane. We saw several whoopers and the captain identified a host of other birds and gave us a lot of interesting history and facts about the animals and refuge. The tour was a pleasant 3 plus hours. The is a small snack galley with a friendly staff person. I have been meaning to do this trip for a long time and it was well worth it. I would want to go back.

We went on this boat tour to see the whooping cranes and were very pleased to observe them so close. Captain Tommy is a very personable guide and explained about these birds and the many other species of birds we also saw. The best part was not only seeing them up close from the water, but he stopped for awhile in one place to allow us to watch them in their natural habitat. By doing this, we could also see all the activity of the other wildlife going on around us and the whooping cranes. We saw a Harrier, Curlew, several herons, pelicans, ducks - and many others. As we continued on, a small group of dolphins followed us next to the boat, much to our delight. The boat was comfortable and had a protected cover, if desired - or could stand on the top for full viewing. We had plenty of room to easily observe everything. The crew made sure we always had drinks and snacks available.

Captain Tommy really gave us an up close look at numerous whoopers - with time to watch and photograph. Wonderful experience watching them feed, and fly, and sleep! So much more than we had hoped for.

Captain Tommy 's ability to spot birds and wildlife and bring you in close to see it makes this trip really special.
