- gringatxMcKinney, Texas369 contributionsNaturalyou can drive for several miles in your car On this beach. A lot of people were in golf carts as well. You can rent them. They look really fun, but we were passing through, so just drove the whole thing in the car. I didn't see any food for sale. You have to buy a $12 parking pass that you can get on the beach from a person in a golf cart selling them or I think you can buy them at local stores.. You need to bring all of your own food, water, picnic, everything. There are only porta potties for bathrooms. Most people had canopies or tents for coverage as there is not a single tree or shade area.Traveled as a coupleWritten June 23, 2022
- Birmingham_ALKaren61 contributionsPretty good for a short stayOverall this is a great place for a short stay. We camped here 2 nights in early April 2021 in a 26 foot travel trailer. The campground is really just a big flat windy parking lot with no trees and everybody just lined up side by side. But actually, that worked out just fine. Although located within sight of the highway, we did not hear traffic sounds & only barely noticed the lights at night. The sites are flat, grassy, with covered tables and water & electrical hook-ups conveniently located. The dump station is easy to access. There is a large dog-walk area. Considering how everyone is just lined up, it was pleasantly quiet as each site backs up to the "coastal prairie", where the most noticeable sounds are birds and the distant surf so we did get a feeling of being somewhere different & wild. The rest rooms/ showers are large, updated, & very clean. At this time, there is no visitors center or camp store, but a large facility is under construction and will be nice when complete. It appears the friendly staff is doing the best they can at this time while waiting for the new building. The beach is about 1/3 mile from campground, but there is no walking path- you have to go down the road but there is a big parking lot. Although ample trash receptacles are all around, we were disappointed how visitors leave trash in the parking lot and on the beach around the tables, which attracts swarms of annoying seagulls. There is a large stretch of beach that allows beach camping if that's your desire. I do appreciate that the state park strives to minimize its footprint on the precious prairie/dune natural area. While there, visit nearby beach town of Port Aransas for dining or shopping and take a drive down to the amazing Padre Island National Seashore. We would like to return to kayak in Fish Pass when it is less windy. Please pick up your litter!Written April 21, 2021
- Angelsmyl13Dallas, Texas7 contributionsAmazingArrived at 4:30 am... After a 6 1/2 hour drive from Dallas, we crashed on the beach wrapped up in some quilts for a power nap before sunrise. Cranes, pelicans, seagulls and sandpiper woke me in time to take it all in. Grey skies and clouds blended with the sea until hints of pink and orange and blue peaked through and gave better definition. Loved every moment!Traveled with friendsWritten April 14, 2021

We have always been allowed to take a very short “check it out” drive through Texas State Parks to quickly see what the they offer without paying the fee. This was a first and a rude one at that! My husband and I were “tour guides” for a group of our friends who had never been to Port A area and we wanted to take them on a look and see drive thru of the State Park. Not only did the ranger rudely say no she informed us it would be $5 per person to merely drive the loop without stopping! Six people equal $30 to check out a park our tax dollars pay for and the salary for the rude ranger!

Forget this place and go to Padre Island National Seashore. It has much better beaches, fewer people and more migratory birds.
The state park isn't worth $10 for a day pass (and that's the senior rate). The 3 port-a-potties by the beach were almost overflowing. The door to the middle one wouldn't close (it popped open after a while). When I mentioned these issues to a staffer, she said they had already been reported.

As a beach Mustang Island State Park is…well, just a beach. As a state park, it’s a joke. The beach is filthy, covered in trash and plastics. There are no trash cans as at other Texas beaches so that you can pick up and dispose of trash easily and these beach goers need all the encouragement you can give them. Dumpsters are located at the exit to the beach parking lot.
The “camping” area is a litter strewn, paved, black top parking lot. Like Walmart, but without any conveniences. Your campsite is on the grass lined up along this parking lot. “Campsites” are designed to face each other so you share your “yard space” and picnic table area with your neighbor. Hope you keep the same hours and get along, ‘cause you’re going to spend some time together.
There is no pedestrian path to the beach, only the road. There is no bike parking wracks so that you can secure a bicycle at the beach area.
There also appear to be no park rangers or staff, with the exception of the office check in. It seemed to be a free for all rule wise. People lit up a lovely beach fire right in front of the beach assess ramp despite the county wide and park burn ban, drove 4 wheel drive vehicles everywhere and so out of control my husband was nearly hit. Jumped out of the way of a careening vehicle.
If you’re don’t care about the environment, or a nice camping area, then this is the Texas State Park for you!

enjoyed the RV park, they had back in with electric and water; nice size shower and bathroom. The water was mixed, some days very hot and other days cool at best. They always seemed to have cool air blowing in.
Wifi was not very good and cut off all the time. it was just a short walk to the beach.
The one big problem was that we got there a day after lots of rain. The RV park was flooded as we had 7 inches of rain after stepping out of our RV. You can dump on your way out.

Things to do include having a picnic, taking a swim, can't remember if you can fish there or not but you probably can. They have some huge granite slabs that create a kind of pier. The issue is you can do all of those things everywhere in Port Aransas so nothing out of the ordinary.

We just went March 16th 2022 We went because we heard so much about it but our experience was not good.
You have to pay $5 per person. No restroom, showers near the beach. You have a walk to them by the entrance of the park.
They have portable restroom which are disgusting
Losts of tiny bugs. My kids were bitten.
We were miserable. Never seen so many bugs at the beach.

As a state park MI is lovely, it has a handicap accessible beach access with minimum traffic and port-a-potties in the parking lot.
As an RV park it’s just as wonderful. W/E sites with a covered picnic area for $20/ day. The bathrooms are well maintained, open air and have both outside showers for quick rinsing and full showers. There are two dump stations towards the exit.
The only odd thing about the campground is the directionality of the hook ups. The towers are in between each site so when making your reservation be sure to pick a site that suits your needs. We nosed in in order to have use of our picnic area.
There is a tiny camp store that sells State Park memorabilia on site where you check in for the campground; we missed it when we just did a daytime visit.

I used to go to Port A before the hurricane, when it was a shady little beach town. Since then, it has totally changed into a mega resort town with miles of newly built homes, Francise eateries, strip centers, disgusting traffic problems. It can take you a couple of hours of wait time to just get across. Want a nice seafood dinner? Prepare yourself for a 1-2 hour wait. Now the beach, something you would see in a picture overly packed! We barely could find us a small little space to set up our umbrella and chair, a solid row of beach goers lined the coast. The water was dirty, my granddaughter just posted on FB that they had human waste just float by them. The way I see it, it's a cash cow for the locals, but if you want a laid back, relaxing carefree vacation Port Aransas is no longer it. I gave the 2-star because we enjoyed our hotel, Beachgate Resort, older very clean, walking distance to the beach, and wonderful clean, 2- pools, and hot tub, family run business.

Although Hurricane Harvey destroyed the park, TPWD is starting to rebuild it. Campsites are open, new restroom. Sites along the beach are still closed, as is the offices. But the park is open.

Great bargain for up close beach access. Park has large clean restroom and showers, a short drive away from the beach access area. There are porta potties in the parking lot where you access the beach. There are a few picnic tables, if you get there very early. Beach area is very safe, as there are no vehicles allowed to drive on beach. All vehicles must park in parking lot. Expansive clean beach, with the chance to roam long distances to get away from the crowds. Recommend

Hello! If I’m coming to mustang state park next Saturday for the beach (first time here), do I need to buy the $12 port aransas beach permit as well as the mustang $5 day pass?
GERALD J.
Spring, TX418 contributions
Each beach area requires a separate fee. If you “only” plan to enter Mustang St Pk, you only need to pay the Mustang park entry fee. Mustang Pk alone, has enough amenities to satisfy most beach goers.
Are small sedans ok to drive on beach?

Yes, we had a small car as a rental and had no issues.
Are you allowed to have alcohol in the beach

Are the camping areas and the bathhouse open? We've gone camping there for years, from tent to pop-up to small trailer and "glamper." All the websites gloss over the damage and make it seem business as usual. Thanks for your input.

Is there decent parking if you don't want to park on beach and don't have permit
GERALD J.
Spring, TX418 contributions
Must pay small entry fee, and there large paved parking lot with restrooms. There is a wooden boardwalk connecting to the beach.
This area of the park, had no vehicular traffic, which is safer.

Are the bathrooms and showers located downstairs at the visitors center or up the ramp?
Hillary S
San Antonio, TX74 contributions
The bathrooms and showers are closer to the electric campsites before the beach parking. The bathrooms are up stairs and the showers downstairs. This is a closed building and not the same as the beach showers that are simply for rinsing off sand which are closer to the beach after the beach parking lot.

Are you able to park near the water's edge like you can at other beaches in the area? We like to back our SUV up to the water so the kids have a sort of base station and a bit of shade, is there a specific place at the park we can do this?
Lisa H
Katy, TX12 contributions
Yes you can but there are no hook ups-they call it their primitive camping area and you'll see everything from tents to cars to RV's! You can have campfires on the beach, too! Not at the RV park 👍🏻
