About
The Presidential Archives and Leadership Library is located on the campus of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin and is administered by the John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Institute. The archival collection was begun by local Odessa citizens as a memorial to the memory of President John F. Kennedy shortly after his assassination in 1963. There was such an overwhelming response with information about other presidents that a decision was made to create a unique collection that would be dedicated to the office of the presidency and an understanding of the electoral process. It is an outstanding collection of exhibits, campaign memorabilia, books, photos, magazines, and other historic collectibles that tell the history of the office of the president and of events that have shaped the American people. This dynamic collection continues to grow and expand as each new president takes office and is available to both the casual visitor and the serious scholar. Few experiences have greater impact than an encounter with history. The mission of the Archives is to have that impact.

Wonderful Presidential Museum
Feb 2020 • Friends
This museum is small, but amazing! They have gorgeous oil paintings of the Presidents and First Ladies! They have a rare set of wood mosaic portraits of the presidents which is outstanding! The portraits alone are worth a visit.

Each president has a small collection of items from their time of service. It could be a campaign button, a coin, a bronze bust, etc. Each collection varies as it’s size is determined by donations given by others. [So if you have presidential memorabilia, this would be a great place to donate it.]

Each presidential collection also includes a First Lady doll clothed in a replica dress.

There is an amazing collection of presidential books in their library for research purposes.

I highly recommend this to all who enjoy presidential history.

Fascinating history on our Presidents
Jan 2020
Unexpected to see this museum and library outside of DC. The exhibits in the galleries include a storyboard for each president and the important aspects of their terms, dolls dressed in exact replicas of the First Ladies gowns, and portraits of presidents and First Ladies and campaign memorabilia. The rug at the entrance is a copy of the one in the Oval Office during the Truman administration. There are 8 columns supporting the dome which represent the 8 presidents that died in office, 4 assassinated and 4 for health reasons. Extremely well done and docents are very knowledgeable to answer all of our questions.

Interesting place for adults and kids alike
Nov 2019
This is not part of the Presidential Libraries but has some most intersting displays worthy of seeing if you are in the area. Much of the reproduced items were locally made or painted. The fellow who is the docent and is in charge, was most informative. The dolls of the first ladies were nicely done. The fellow who started the place was a Jaycee and JCI Senator as was my husband so reading about his accomplishments was great. Any time you can learn our nations history is a good day.

THIS PLACE WAS AMAZING
Nov 2019 • Couples
It’s not a very large place, but packed with the most wonderful exhibits. Oil paintings of each President after JFK. The archive was originally slated as a memorial to JFK, but the outpouring of gifts and artifacts from the public led them to make it inclusive of all presidential memorabilia. It only takes about 20 minutes to walk through, but it will be the best 20 minutes of your life. Free and run by very helpful, kind volunteers.

Beautiful Tribute To Out Presidents
Apr 2019 • Couples
This is a must see! It’s an amazing tribute and display of both the Predidents of our country but also their wives. Beautiful china dolls depicting the gowns worn by the First Ladies. Our guide Gary was such a pleasure and loves showing the Bush home that has been moved to this location. We loved everything about this place and sad that it isn’t marketed more widely. Their archive library is one of a kind. It’s free but you will be so impressed that you will gladly make a donation to their cause. Makes an American proud.

Extremely Well Done
Feb 2019
Small enough to walk through in about 90 minutes. So much information it would take days to absorb it all. I enjoyed the “Know The Presidents” readings and replica dolls of the first lady’s gowns. I was personally greeted and allowed to visit at my own pace. Even walked through a second time. I very much enjoyed the experience.

Great history of presidents and tour of Bush home
Jan 2019 • Couples
This community should be very proud of this beautiful tribute to past and present presidents. It is a wonderful facility. A great tribute to presidents and First Ladies without any political undertones. I wish everyone had the opportunity to see the humble beginning home of George and Barbara Bush. This facility is maintained by volunteers and donations. It is definitely worth a visit.

See the presidential-signature collection & Bush house
Nov 2018 • Business
A very interesting collection overall. My favorites were the Bush house (Bush family's first home in Odessa) and the signatures of the presidents, made more vivid by being on such a wide variety of documents.
