This building was not in the best part of town but was passed by on the way to the historical area. Apparently built by the local Mayor, Jose de Laredo, who was a painter and decorator and was heavily involved in the design. It was opened in 1886 and is now available to tour at limited times . Apparently the inside is as colorful as the exterior which is worthy of o look.

This monument looks like a remain from the Moorish conquest of the majority of Iberia, but upon examining its history, you'll be astoonished that it was built in the 19th Century, more than 700 years since the Moors were defeated in Alcalá! I thought it was a mosque because its architecture is that of a mosque, besides you can see Arabic scripture on the arcades and facades of the building, even you can observe a minaret-like cylindrical ancillary structure next to it!

Don´t expect anything comparable to the spectacular centuries old history of the old city of Alcala. This is a new addition which is pretty spectacular because of its moorish influence but was built in the 19th century by someone with a lot of money.
I might have done something similar myself if I had had as much money as this guy. Once you have been in touch with the Arab and Moorish influence in the art architecture and culture of Spain which is part if its soul you cannot divorce yourself from the sheer beauty of much of this which is unique and outstanding.
The builder and origninal owner is a person who obviously understood this and tried his best to recreate this world which was expunged from Spanish culture by Isabel using every tool available especially the Catholic church.
I personally agree with this pursuit and appreciate it. This is not a copy of anything but a recreation of a world lost.
Worth visiting

This is a strictly guided tour that's Saturday and Sunday that is four times in the morning and four in the afternoon. Our guide, Beatriz, was engaging and very well informed. It was great to get a history this little palace and Alcala as a whole. You will see here some ancient scholarly and religious books in the best conditions that would make the Smithsonian full of envy.

First step on the walk to the city from the RENFE station - charming little building (for a palace, absolutely tiny!). Unfortunately visits during the weekend have to be scheduled (so couldn't get inside) but outside elements beautiful and very telling of the times' style.

Built at the end of the XIX century, it is a precious private house now possible to visit for a small fee. Now is a bibliographic center for University of Alcalá.

Dazzling pre-Gaudian design with moorish elements; an explosion of colours, patterns and diversity..

We were told at the shop that it was closed due to lack of interest. This was late afternoon, so maybe it's open in the mornings. What we saw was nice.
