The original excavations in the 20s and 30s were left for later attention. Major excavations were a part of the 1980s Guatemala expedition. The E group is famous and that is south of the old airstrip while major monuments are to the north. I have not been there recently but know it is an important site.

The entrance fee to Tikal National Park is 150 quetzal + 50 quetzal for Uaxactun. In my opinion, it is not worth to go to Uaxactun (+20$ p.p. for transfer). The only plus is absence of tourists. The road is not good and you spend 1 hour just for the trip to Uaxactun + 1 hour back. You do not need... More

This is the second time I have been to Uaxactun and I simply love it. It is a very special place. Very laid back with good ruins. The village is in the center of the site and on each side are the excavations. It is about a 40 minute drive on a rough road from Tikal. We did it with... More

These ruins 23 kilometers north of Tikal are small but really interesting and you will almost certainly have them to your self. A bonus is the small Maya village you set out from, good signage just park near either sign for the 2 main groups and walk up a slight incline through the village. sites on both sides of the... My wife and I along with a hired guide from our hotel drove our rental car along a long, bumpy road to Uaxactun. A jeep or similar vehicle is necessary because of the potholes, puddles, mud, and rocky road conditions along the way. It was worth it, though. Our guide took us through Uaxactun Village to the first Mayan site... More

If you go there just make sure your guide name is not Jose! He was so disrespectful and racist plus he was running all the way and people almost lost him! This is not the way to lead a tour!

A life altering experience. You should not miss the sunset because it is simply stunning. Bring plenty of water.
