About
The International Museum of Art & Science is a Smithsonian Affiliate and fully accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. IMAS is the premier art and science museum of South Texas and contains over 50,000 square feet of exhibit space. The IMAS galleries host a number of revolving art and science exhibits each year. The museum provides a unique opportunity for visitors to participate in hands-on science exhibits and to learn about original works of art while encouraging creativity and innovation. The IMAS permanent collection includes more than 2,000 natural history and geology specimens and 4,500 folk art and textile objects. The 1,500 fine art works in the permanent collection reflect many countries and artistic movements beyond Mexico, dating from the 16th century to the present. Very Enjoyable Place to Visit
Apr 2021
I love going to museums and I have been to museums all over the world. This one in McAllen will definitely not disappoint. The art side of the museum changes exhibits frequently. They bring in excellent exhibits. The science side is sure to make young kids fascinated with science and biology. Great place to visit with children and adults. Great place to just enjoy yourself for a few hours. While it is not a big museum by NY or Chicago standards, it is a very good museum and well curated with what is shown on a revolving basis.

Great Family Time

The IMAS is a great family museum! They are closed on Mondays, so be aware of that. But they are open on Sundays from 1-5 that is when we go.

Small museum, some nice exhibits.

This is a small museum, with a couple of galleries for science, and a couple for art. They do well with the small space, at the time we were there with a fun and informative interactive exhibit on water use. It was probably designed for young teens, my wife and I (in our 60s) and my father enjoyed it anyway. We were also impressed with a "seed to table" exhibit designed for younger kids, letting them interact with (plastic) food from farm to grocery to kitchen to table.

I wouldn't expect to spend more than an hour or two here at most. And that will be time well spent.

Perfect for an educational trip with family

comparing this museum with the rest of the museums that I have been I will rate this as one of my favorite ones. The staff there were very helpful especially one young man that was leading the tour. He made the tour very fun for my children
they loved the big sofa located in the play room . The place was very clean and they have very attentive staff working there.

A gem!

Our first trip to the IMAS, but definitely not our last. All the staff was fantastic - explaining the different parts of the museum and helping us get interested. We became members when the counter staff person showed us the number other museums we could visit with our membership. It is terrific!

This museum continues to surprise me. It consistently has well-thought out exhibitions. The children's area is interactive and full of imaginative possibilities. The gift shop is innovative also.

Loved being members!

We've gotten a ton of use out of our membership over the last few years. It's not the biggest museum, but that makes it more manageable (and not exhausting!) with kids of any age. There's always an interesting art exhibit in the back halls and a kid-friendly traveling exhibit in the main space.

The permanent attractions, like the art studio and the giant wooden playground made it worth a visit 2-3 times a month. I recommend packing a lunch to eat outside on the picnic tables after your visit.

Overall: It's a fun, interactive, clean, family-friendly museum, probably best for babies up to middle-school age. But anyone can have fun and learn something! Oh, and their annual Night at the Brewseum (and post-event Sunday beer garden) is a great date night.

We've really enjoyed the yearly membership and rotating exhibits. The discovery area is great for kids, and the classes are informational and interesting.

Great for adults and kids!

I have visited this museum for over 30 years and it just keeps getting better. Love the interactive play for kids! Now that we live here and have a membership, we have grown to also love the activities for kids. They love the creatures in the science room and could play for hours in the activity room if we let them. The new HEB seed to table room is really cool. The kids played like they were really shopping and cooking groceries. Love it!

Nothing much to see

This museum is pretty small. Although the art gallery is bigger compared to the rest of the attractions at the museums. I'd say it was a waste of money for us.
