If you are visiting the Texas Hill Country wine region and you want to sample some of the best, if not THE best, wines made from 100% Texas grapes, then you should visit Calais Winery. While the tasting area is modest (it is a barrel ageing cave), the Bordeaux style wines are outstanding and have been so for at least the past 13 years. The winemaker, Ben Calais, and his team (Gina and Mary) provide an educational and tasty experience as they walk you through the wines and introduce you to the regions in which the grapes were grown and the issues/rewards for those particular vintage years. You will not find a better Texas cabernet sauvignon, merlot, or cabernet franc along Route 290, nor a more welcoming group of people. BUT MAKE SURE TO GET A RESERVATION! The venue is small and they typically serve 6-8 people per hour, along with the big table in back for special group tastings. (If you can't get a reservation, you can try French Connection wines, Ben Calais' other winery which specializes in Rhone style wines and has a bigger venue just outside of Hye.)

I made a repeat visit here to bring some friends and unfortunately the experience did not live up to our expectations. The wine is excellent, using all Texas grapes but produced in the French style by the owner Ben Calais. The reds especially were very tasty. An hour was allotted for our group. Because the previous group ran late, we were rushed from the very beginning. The server, whose name we did not get, was not welcoming. She provided only perfunctory information about the wines, and after each taste she entreated us to drink up quickly so she could get on with the next pour. She did say she was short handed, but her grouchy snappy demeanor said she didn't want us there.
An easy solution would be to allow more than one hour per group. This fine wine needs to be savored. We could not enjoy it.

We enjoyed our reserve tasting at the wine maker’s table at Calais for my husband’s birthday. We were fortunate to have Ben, the winemaker, as our tasting guide. Ben is passionate about winemaking and it is definitely reflected in the quality of his wines. If you love deep, rich, complex reds, then you will love Calais wines. This is a Superb boutique wine experience.

A superb tasting of their range of wines ranging from very good to excellent. Met the winemaker pouring his wines which is always a plus. An intimate fun and enlightening tasting, Texas wine is big time. Cabernet and Gravitas blend are first rate.

Mary was our tasting guide. These wines were our favorite out of all the wineries we visited. Mary gave us a history of each wine we tried and was extremely knowledgeable. We wouldn’t have found the winery if it wasn’t for John Mead from Texanwinwtours.com. We will be back.

The wife and I celebrated an early Valentines and made an appointment to taste wines from Calais Winery. What a treat to have the owner wine maker himself, Ben Calais pouring and explaining each wine. The knowledge he shared was very enlightening. So happy he is involved in our 100% Texas wine effort.

This is by far the BEST wine in Hye! This is a true boutique winery and the tastings are held in a bunker, yes I said bunker. Ben is the owner, wine maker and his knowledge is crazy!!! There is a reason his wine sells out almost immediately after it is released. The tasting is worth the $40 fee. I would never in my life ever think this is Texas wine. It is robust and so smooth. Best wine around.

You have to have a reservation, but I am telling you it is a must go while you are in the area.

You will thank me!

Ben is known as the best wine maker in Texas and he deserves the title. He makes small batches of wine that are as good as you can get anywhere. It is best to call ahead for a tasting but i have added myself to someone else's tasting. He didn't mind but we bought several bottles. His wines are expensive but you really don't mind since you get what you pay for. He usually has his white pickup parked by the entrance and that is all of his advertising. He is just east if Hye Texas on 290. If you like wine, do yourself a favor and stop by. You won't regret it. He also has a Rum distillery right down the road with quality rum.

Calais winery is a must stop while visiting the wineries on 290. You have to make an appointment in order to do a wine tasting, but it is limited to 10 people (I think). From the outside the Winery doesn't look like much, but walk in and you're greeted with a very modern and new building. Benjamin Calais does the wine tasting himself and explains in detail his process of producing that wine and why. It's great and personable and you can really see the passion in his product and how it translate to a great product. I highly recommend everyone go see Benjamin at Calais!

Trying to find the place was crazy. There was a white pickup truck next to a homemade sign and French flag marking the caliche road. The road brings you to a cellar with a couple of wooden doors. Should you dare to enter, you will be treated to some of the best red wine to be found in the state.
