Located directly in front of, and surrounded by Ben Taub Hospital, and across from Gate 3 of the Houston Zoo is the unusual and seemingly out of place Pioneer Memorial Log House Museum. The Pioneer Memorial Log House was built in 1936 by the San Jacinto Chapter of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
The present mission of the Pioneer Memorial Log House Museum is to preserve materials relating early Texas, and through exhibits and education programs make the public aware of the early formation of Texas; especially the Battle of San Jacinto and the Republic of Texas.
Admission to the museum by the general public is free. The museum is open to the public the third (3rd) weekend of each month.
There are permanent exhibits and vintage photos and documents distributed throughout the building. It is a small, simple structure and the museum, while interesting should not be visited with high expectations. But it is worth the visit.
