We are frequent visitors of this museum where you can observe that strange art that you won’t see in another venues. The place offers different exhibitions and frequently they bring new artists.
Highly recommend!!

It's free. They do accept donations. The musuem is very small and there are only 5 cars including one car at the entrance. The museum also showcases 2D art work from local artists. The folks working the front desk at the museum were very nice. I enjoyed the museum it's good to just go on your own if you have a car. I wouldn't pay $88 for a private tour though

A true community gem. Not only was it cool to see the art cars, a breathtaking display of 3-D art, but I liked the pairing of the themed art exhibit (in this case, "animals") and the selection of "first 100 submissions" allowing many under-represented artists of all ages and skill levels to exhibit together. What truly moved me however was the passionate docents who engaged visitors with additional information about the art and artists, but shared the mission of the owners to provide a creative outlet and artistic voice for this community. It was inspiring to meet people who wanted to make a difference in their community, who were so welcoming, and still so creative and whimsical.

The art and art cars cycle so each experience will be different. The gallery is small and about an hour is a reasonable amount of time to see everything in depth and chat with the docents. Photography was encouraged. No admission, just a donation, which I was happy to give! They organize art car parades and other events too. Parking was very limited (we were lucky and got a space near the door), but take the time to find alternate parking close by - the museum is worth it.

We would like to have seen this, but website says it is closed. For how long? Nobody knows. If you want to keep checking back, its probably a good idea before you go. I heard only three cars are now on display, though.

Since it's titled "Art Car Museum", that's what we drove to Houston expecting to see. But much to our surprise there were only 3 cars inside.
We left a generous donation at the entrance collection point before entering with anticipation, but it was a large let-down inside. The main exhibit was actually walls covered with children's non-car-associated artwork. Very commendable of them to display those, but that wasn't what we came to see. The museum is misnamed.

The museum stands out as an appropriate and interesting looking building for the Art Cars. Don't expect to find too many art cars here, there are just a few. The reason is that the majority of art cars are privately owned and most owners drive them around Houston on a daily basis - or display them at their homes. Nevertheless, if you go here knowing that there won't be an abundance of cars, you won't be disappointed. If you enjoy these cars, it is a must to attend the Art Car parade, held every May in Houston. It is a fantastic event with ample parking due to the length of the route.

The museum is small, there is no parking.,..there were just 4 cars and 2 motorcycles there!! The cars displayed are interesting, but it would be cool to have a bigger space with lots of more cars..there are a lot of people in Houston they have cars that are decorated...they should have more pictures of the parades there has been or something!!!

Kind of dissapointing! but still enjoyed the exhibit!

This is a free museum(donations accepted).
Perfect stop for an hour or less. They change exhibits about once every 30 days and have a special art show occasionally.
If you find yourself in the Heights area of Houston and looking for something to do. Check it out.

It’s not in Houston’s Museum District. It’s in the Heights. It’s not in an exotic looking manor house with extensive grounds. It’s wedged in between a convenience store and, well, the Heights.

It does have decorated cars as its main theme. Indeed, this is the organization that sponsors the “Art Car Parade” every April, featuring vehicles decorated in completely fanciful and bizarre ways. As stated in its web site, “The Art Car Museum is a private institution dedicated to contemporary art. It is an exhibition forum for local, national and international artists with an emphasis on art cars, other fine arts and artists that are rarely, if ever, acknowledged by other cultural institutions. The museum’s goal is to encourage the public’s awareness of the cultural, political, economic and personal dimensions of art.”

Today (February, 2019) the theme was “animals”. The sponsors put out a call to the Houston (and other?) artistic community for any contributions on this theme. They got over a hundred responses. And they simply displayed them all.
Yes, there are three vehicles in the center of the exhibition: a Prius that is simply painted with wonderful, fanciful designs; giant Rabbit pushing a cart containing several hundred tiny rabbits; a Toyota Camry that has the head of what seems to be a long-horned musk ox on the front, and decorated with hundreds of objects--mostly shells, but also several dozen skulls. The showrooms have paintings on the walls, of house cats and dogs. On the wall are also an armadillo, a bit of tree with a family of squirrels peeking out, and a pair of rabbits with their heads sticking out of the wall with the caption “AR-15 anyone?” and, in the small print, “This ad paid for by: Citizens for the protection of carrots”.
Across the floor are various sculptures (mostly in steel) of a hyena, a scorpion, and a magnificent eagle

Unfortunately, this exhibition will end this month (February, 2019), but rest assured, next month will, again, be something “different”.

It is a great museum. I highly recommend it.

I'm embarrassed because of how this museum's politically motivated display will reflect Texans and Americans solutions to disagreements. Unfortunately, International travelers come to see beautiful American automobiles and instead leave with the collector's childish solutions to complicated political problems.
