Decades in the making with well-planned layout. Open to public several weekends during both spring and fall seasons. Large variety of plants and trees to feast your eyes with tours led by fantastic docents. They describe gardens history and provide great detail of habitat. You can not 'wander about' on your own. There's many plants for sale to bring home... More

This garden is a member of the nation wide Garden Conservancy. It is open to the public only 12 weekend days out of the year, 6 in spring and 6 in fall. It is open to private tours year round. The selection of plants and their placement in the garden makes Peckerwood a place that shouldn't be missed. Rare plants... More

not necessarily native plants, however, plants that will grow successfully in this zone - low water requirement plants (they seldom water the plants). Many plants were located in other countries but with a similar latitude. They have tours several times a year (there is a charge) of the gardens plus a second tour (and another charge) of the owner's collections... More

The founder John Fairey did our tour and he was wonderful. Very interesting and knowledgable. He is a believer in diversity of plants. The gardens may be toured by appointment only. A great place for those who appreciate plants and nature.

This garden is run as a foundation created by one person whose personal vision has shaped an interesting horticultural experience. We went in early spring (March) when no much was blooming. The guided tour pointed out many unusual species that the founder had personally collected on many trips. The property, located in Hempstead, Texas, also includes the founder's home, an... More

Peckerwood Garden is the private garden of John G. Fairy, who is responsible for introducing a wide range of rare, native plants from Mexico to an American audience. It is open to the public during specific weekends. They give guided tours and have a small nursery of plants that are not available in normal garden stores.

Peckerwood Garden is an amazing example of what can be done with Texas pastureland. The 20 acre garden is filled with trees, green and flowing vegetation along with cactus and water treatments. The place is peaceful and beautiful. Our tour guide was very informative and be bought plants to take home. Well worth the trip to Hempstead, Texas.

I toured this garden on one of the open garden days in spring,2005 with a group of Master Gardeners from Louisiana. This garden was the most outstanding garden I have ever visited. A wide variety of flora integrated with a unique collection of sculpture, made the visit most memorable. The owner was also a gracious informant and readily answered all... More

Peckerwood is a true gem. Somewhat hidden and off the beaten path it is a must see for those interested in almost any gardens bus especially those interested in Native, Southwest, and Mexican plantings. John, the owner of the garden was very nice to talk with and took time with me to show off many plant favorites. Also, Next door... More
