As a family (kids 12/10/8) we have done almost all of the nature areas in Dallas (Arbor Hills and Cedar Ridge Preserve being the two best in my opinion) and we had not heard of this one until recently. It is above average compared to other nature areas in the city which is saying something for something inside the loop. The trails are largely flat so if you are looking for a challenging hike look elsewhere (Cedar Ridge). Pros: 1) Limited trash. I know this seems silly, but inside the loop this is pretty rare to see. 2) Most of the trails are shaded which is a huge plus. Given we went in the spring it was moderate from a temperature standpoint so I cannot speak for other times of the year. 3) Access to water which we loved for our dog to play in. Cons: There are two parking areas. The one on the east is a paved trail that is below average from a hiking perspective. You can hear quite a bit of road noise and it doesn't offer anything special IMO. The one on the west side is really nice with a loop trail of about a mile - it has water, shade, and wildflowers (in the spring). For a trail that is 15 minutes from those that live in North Dallas this is a worthwhile area in town. Make sure you park in the west lot though.

For me, though the preserve is a true nature spot, it is full of bikers - really no room for walkers like myself.

About the best you can hope for in Garland. The trails are fairly short but great for taking the dogs for a walk.

This site should appeal to people of all ages. The trail is well maintained and the staff is very helpful. I understand that it closes at 12 AM in the summer.

You will miss the park. Very quiet, nice for picnic, walk... very safe. Will close by sunset. Nice hang out place for small group.
