    Just meander
For a town of about 15,000, Fredericksburg punches above its weight class. Main Street is home to many good restaurants and stores. The sidewalk is generally covered, meaning that on a hot or rainy day you’re out of the worst of the elements. On our first evening we strolled after the shops were closed and got a flavor of the town. But the next day, when everything was open, it was really hopping. Stores had lots of customers and the wine bars were doing good business. Highway 290 forms Main Street, and there’s a steady stream of traffic including large trucks passing through town. Happily the crosswalks are at every block. The street itself is wide, so when the light turns to “walk”, start immediately. Halfway across you’ll see the clock begin to countdown.

    Admiral Nimitz Gallery
I drove down Main Street before heading back to San Antonio. Main Street looks like a great street to walk down to check out some stores and admire the historical buildings. I missed out on the Admiral Nimitz Gallery, which is located on Main Street as well.

    Crowded, but some great shops
I had a very nice time walking up one side of Main Street, and then down the other. It was crowded, which did make it a tiny bit challenging at times. There’s a decent variety of stores. The walkways are shaded, which helped a lot with the Texas sun and heat.

Main Street in Fredericksburg is an enjoyable walk of 10 or more city blocks passing many shops, restaurants, wine tasting rooms, historical sights, and more. It is a 4-lane wide street with free head-in parking. Traffic lights at cross streets allow for easy, safe crossing between the two sides of the street.

Okay, Fredericksburg is a place you want to eat and shop if you are in Hill Country driving around. There is a lot of fun places to shop and so many good places to eat. We always stop at a sweet shop on the main street with the kids. My only complaint is it gets a little crowded on a pretty Saturday afternoon. There are several German restaurants in this area. One sometimes has live music in an outdoor area. Fredericksburg, Boerne, Gruene, and Wemberly are all basically a yearly pilgrimage for us. If you are interested in these little towns, they all have festivals and markets in the town square different times of the year.

Main Street has so many historical sites and specialty shops. It is a day excursion in itself! The diners are fabulous. The man who runs the Fredericksburg Winery is a Hoot!! Walking through the door of the Chocolate is enough to give you a toothache! But the chocolate is awesome! We loved it. I was there with my Mom, two Aunts and Cousin. Needless to say, when 5 old women get together, not too much gets done by way of "plans". Even though we did not make it to the museums, etc., it was pure joy just to walk around this quaint, beautiful town and enjoy being with Family! We are already planning another stay! One small complaint - which has nothing to do with our stay - this site will not let me type who was there. We had NO teenagers!! Only us Grannies.

Mainstreet is overpriced. They need more and better restuarants in town. The wineries are a tourist trap. Most dont even make wine on their property. They are not geared for older folks. The ones that we could get in seems like they were just having a big party and taking people's money. They want 15 to 20 bucks just to taste 6 wines. Been to Oklahomas wineries and can tastes as many as you want for free as long as you purchase a bottle. Hill country wines are not very good for the price.

Restaurants, clothing stores, wine tasting, nic nacs of every description for each pocketbook. Add in history, music and sweet shoppes and you have main street, Fredericksburg.

While it is not overly large, the many different types of enjoyable things to see and do a walk along this street last most of the day.

At night, dining and music, lights and sights give one a brand new perspective

If you love to shop this is definitely the place for you! We went up and down both sides of the street and checked out all the shops and even a restaurant and a candy store. The owners of all the stores were really friendly and there were a few places that offered free beer....no purchase needed! Granted it wasn't the best beer BUT free is free! I will definitely come back again but next time maybe during the week. We came on a Friday and it was super crowded.....I can only imagine how packed it is on Saturday and Sunday.

The town of Fredericksburg is a German themed community similar to small towns you find in the mountains, only without the mountains. And I mean that in a good way. The main shopping area is about 8 blocks long with small shops adjacent to each other. Not a lot of souvenir and T-shirt shops, their themes are mostly unique and interesting to browse through.
If you like German food, this is the place to come. We tried several German restaurants and they were all good.
This is the hometown to Admiral Chester Nimitz and there is an incredible Pacific War Museum right in town. It has a golf course nearby and a day trip to Lukenbach, TX made famous in a country song.
We enjoyed our time in Fredericksburg.

This is the second visit to Fredericksburg in as many years. We enjoyed visiting many of the shops along the main street and always encounter the same friendly attitude in each shop we went into. It's the kind of place I could picture living in. We parked at the visitor center and did all of our walking from there. One really great feature was a walkway just outside of the National War Museum of the Pacific. Along this walkway there were various sign boards depicting aspects and characteristics of Admiral Nimitz. What a man of noble character, integrity and humility.

Even during the off season on a weekday, Fredericksburg’s sidewalks were pretty crowded, making it impossible to socially distance. The shops were varied, albeit a bit expensive, and there are several restaurants, though check the days / hours of business because many were closed on Tuesdays. The shade of the walkway made strolling through the downtown district much easier than being out in the hot sun.

Did a day trip to Fredericksburg & spent a few hours browsing the many gift shops. Some of these are pricy, but still possible to get a good buy (My wife picked up sunglasses & I bought a canvas knapsack for the grand total of 6 bucks). Lots of restaurants too.
