About
Enjoy a self-guided tour of our grounds and glimpse into the daily lives of the German pioneers of the Texas Hill Country. Our 3.5 acre grounds, located in downtown Fredericksburg, feature historic homesteads and buildings donated by founding families of Gillespie County. Among the historic homesteads and buildings are: one-room schoolhouse, log cabin, Sunday house, blacksmith shop, bath house, barn, smokehouse. Each showcases artifacts and architecture which help to preserve and tell the story of these pioneers. Also, browse through our fire department museum which displays pieces of early 20th century firefighting equipment.

Enjoyed our visit here. We took the walk-through to her on her own which was very informative and allowed us to take our time, walk through the grounds, and see what we wanted to see. I would recommend this museum especially if you are from German dissent.

I love how this isn't just a walk through museum with stuff to read but more of a hands on experience. There are several buildings throughout the museum property that you get to walk through. It shows a glimpse into the past and how our ancestors lived. My favorite was the one room school house. In each building there are recordings that tell you a bit about what life was like here long ago. We had a great time and would definitely come again. If coming to Fredericksburg make this your first stop to really learn some history of the town.

While this isn't my first historic village/museum of this nature to visit, it was definitely one of the best ones. The museum features homes and buildings from around the county c. 1800s. The buildings, artifacts, and audio reels help to tell the story of the early settlers in the region. Everything is well preserved and provides a greater understanding of what the Germans faced coming to Texas in the 1840s and how they managed to thrive. Staff is friendly and eager to answer questions. As of this posting they also have past Fredricksburg anniversary exhibits up to help celebrate Fredricksburg's 175th anniversary.

Thoroughly Enjoyed this museum

This museum is scattered through several old buildings which have been restored or moved to this site. The grounds are nice to wander as you move from building to building. A very good depiction of what life was like and some of the tools, implements and household items used in early Fredricksburg. Staff was very helpful and friendly.

Learn the history of Fredericksburg
Apr 2021 • Couples
If you are a first time visitor to Fredericksburg this is the best place to start if you want to learn about the town and it’s German history. Admission is: $7.50 Adults; $3.00 ages 6-17;
5 and under free. Start with the excellent 15 minute video then tour the buildings at your own pace: a school, barn, blacksmith shop, summer house, smokehouse, cabin, two homes and fire engine display. Each building has audio recordings by locals that describe what you see. If you need to rest there are many benches to sit on. The restrooms were spotless and gift store small but nice. Check the website to see if there are any special events going on but even if there isn’t, this is a great place to visit.
