About
Bending Branch Winery sits on 56 scenic acres near the Guadalupe River outside of Comfort. Established in 2009 by the Young family, Bending Branch is best known for its experimentation in every facet of winemaking, including fermentation methods and production processes. CEO and Executive Winemaker Robert W. Young, M.D., MPH, coined the term “Next World Wines” to describe his winemaking philosophy. Bending Branch Winery is the Tannat House of Texas. Wines include award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Picpoul Blanc, Tempranillo, and Souzão, but Bending Branch Winery is best known for Tannat, its signature red wine. In February of 2023, father-daughter team and Kentucky natives Dr. Bob Young and Alison Young brought some of their Bourbon Country heritage to Comfort by launching of two new bourbon brands, Bending Branch 1840 and ChickenDuck.

A beautiful setting, good wine and pleasant staff. Great place to sit quietly, enjoy your wine and take in the bucolic views of the hill country.
Best perhaps to visit during the work week if possible, as the solitude, peaceful quiet will be GONE once weekend crowds and 'live music' takes over (unless of course that's what you prefer).
I particularly like the fact I don't have to drive ALL THE WAY to Fredericksburg or Stonewall to have a winery experience.
Purchase a BOTTLE, sit out on the shaded patio, listen to the softly piped in R & B oldies, enjoy the views, meditate...PRICELESS!

We visited Bending Branch Winery, as we had heard they made a Tannat wine. We like the varietal, and is is harder to find. Bending Branch did not disappoint! They had several offerings not only in that grape, but in several others. The wines were well balanced, flavorful and very good.

The staff was very knowledgeable about their wines and production. They took time to give an overview of each wine, answer questions and provide a great winery experience. A map was marked for us with other wineries to visit, as well, showing a support of the industry, as a whole.

We came back to Oregon with Bending Branch winery in hand. Can't wait to visit, again.

I took my best friend who was visiting from Geogia here and it was very nice. We each bought a bottle of wine that we were excited to share with family. Unfortunately, we did not realize that my friend was unable to fly home with her bottle nor was she able to mail it to herself. She chanced and contacted Kelsy who sold it to us to see if she would be able to mail it to her along with another bottle that I had purchased for her for her birthday. We were excited that her response was YES. I was able to get both bottles to Kelsy but sadly to this day my best friend has yet to receive her bottles of wine. The wine is great! the location is absolutely beautiful, but I am disappointed in the unfulfilled promise that was made to my best friend.

While the wine is very delightful, the service and acknowledgement of our presence was less than impressive. I/we were walked away from during our tasting several times for deliveries, drive up orders and customers that arrived after us. The ladies were more interested in tequila drink recipes than us trying to enjoy the atmosphere and learning about the wines offered. Other customers got three pours on their tasting and actually was told they didn't have to pay for their tasting. Possibly because they immediately mentioned they were there to purchase 3 bottles of wine? Not sure what the deal was? I/we felt sooo unwelcome. We went off the beaten track on our trip to visit and was so let down. While all of your reviews are fabulous, I wonder if they are all verified? Sorry, have to be honest.

Lovely setting for a producer of high quality organic wines.

A pioneer in introducing the Tannat varietal to the Texas Hill Country, Bending Branch provides an excellent excuse to make a trip to Comfort, TX. Excellent wines dispensed by knowledgeable personal.

You may get up close & personal with one of the chickens that provide pest control for this organic farm.

Excellent presentation by our tasting server, shared LOTS of knowledge! Rustic setting both getting there and at the winery. Wines were very decent. Got to know a new variety, the Texas Tannat, good wine! Should provide some crackers/etc included in the tasting prices, kind of cheesy one has to buy some when doing different wine tastings, not normal or expected, IMO.

Suggested time to visit for tasting only, longer if you want to eat/music/etc.

Talk about a good time! I don't know how we stumbled onto this winery without much research but I am so glad we did. Beautiful location, pet-friendly, and live music on the weekends. We enjoyed their current wine selection so much we bought a few bottles. I would highly recommend this spot!

Who outside of, perhaps, the Central Texas area has ever heard of the small town of Comfort, TX?

However, you're very likely going to start hearing a lot more about it, if for no other reason than Bending Branch Winery is located just west of town (with a new [October 2013] tasting room "downtown"; the original tasting room is also open at the winery, located about three miles SW of Comfort just off Hwy 27 SW.

(Comfort's downtown, although only a few blocks long, is in itself charming and also well worth the visit.)

Bending Branch is gaining lots of attention for its fantastic wines, including a recent (and rare) Double Gold award granted for its 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon (Newsom Vineyards, Texas High Plains AVA) at the 2013 San Francisco Wine Competition. Folks, that a double gold awarded to a Cabernet Sauvignon from Texas in the very heartland of California "Cab Country". Quite an accomplishment.

Bending Branch's other wines are equally worthy, including their line of several Tannats, Picpoul (if available, be sure to try their Picpoul aged in bourbon barrels - truly unique), Petite Syrah, the Chloe blend, and others. Some grapes come from the Paso Robles area in Calfornia, while most wines are made from grapes grown either on the estate or contracted from commercial growers in the State of Texas (like Newsom, which grew the grapes for the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon).

The property itself is charming and the tasting room is very friendly (you ARE in the middle of Texas!). Lots of people are wandering up I-10 from San Antonio or working their way along the Texas Hill Country Wine Trail from Fredericksburg through Kerrville to find Bending Branch, so be sure to seek out this winery in your travels through Central Texas. You WILL NOT be sorry and, if you're not already familiar with quality Texas wines, probably very pleasantly surprised!

(It should also be noted that Bending Branch makes its wines using sustainable agricultural practices, so while making great wines, they're also being excellent stewards of the land.)

We're not fans of Texas red wine but several of the wines here are good, some grapes from California and some from the Texas Panhandle. This is a good visit if you're in the area. Nice shaded patio to enjoy your wine.
