While visiting Comfort for the afternoon, we stopped by to visit this memorial.
It is well kept and has not only a historical marker but two other plaques with history of the area.
There are several benches in the shade of huge oak trees to sit and take in the breeze and contemplate what German Settlers experienced.
We even so an Axis deer stroll by in the area.
It is easy to locate about a block off of the main highway.
A very serene and relaxing stop off and nice to have a memorial for the area.

The bitter rivalry between "North" and "South" during the Civil War was played out when a group was slaughtered for having differing views from others. There's more to the story than that, but stopping by this monument is a moving experience and one worth making time for. The violence should not be forgotten. You don't have to care about history to understand that passion for an idea can be deadly.

Apparently during the civil war there was a large German population that supported the North. A battle was fought in South Texas and several of the German residents went and picked up the bodies of dead Union soldiers. They brought them back to Comfort TX and buried them. That is what the monument is for. The Germans were later harassed and some killed for what they did.

This monument is worth a visit. The only Union monument south of the Mason Dixon line, it commemorates those lost in the river at the Battle of Nueces. These men from Comfort were largely "Freethinkers" who were progressive in their thoughts and did not support slavery. Their names are carved on the monument and there are historical markers.

The only place other than Arlington Cemetery where the US Flag flies at half staff, in tribute to the brave US patriots who were slaughtered by the Texans at the start of the Civil War.

A "must see" for history buffs. Too involved to describe here, but relates to the Civil War and those from this area that supported the Union. Recognized as one of the few locations permitted to fly the US Flag at half mast at all times. Look into it.

This is an historic place that shows that Germans always went for the weak ones and died for their believes. This is a very beautiful place and when you have the time try to stop there and check it out.

Commemorating the community of German immigrants, unwilling to sacrifice their convictions, who fled the confederacy for Mexico. Tragically almost all were slaughtered only a days ride from the Mexico border. Much information can be found at the Comfort Heritage Foundation.
