Texas A&M is front and center in College Station, Texas. You can’t do much of anything without hearing something relating to this massive institution of higher learning and it will always remain the center of conversation among residents. But College Station has other noteworthy attractions and one of them happens to be New Republic Brewing, a craft brewery that has been churning out tasty suds since 2010.
I was already familiar with New Republic beer because it is distributed in my local area of west Houston. But as a beer writer and traveler known for my Great Beer Now beer blog, I have always wanted to visit this brewery and see what it is like. I finally got my opportunity when my wife arranged a weekend getaway and we made it a point to pay a visit to this small but growing craft brewery on the outskirts of town.
New Republic is housed in a warehouse of sorts and you are greeted immediately by the bar and bartender when you walk inside. The bartenders are quite knowledgeable of the products and they can answer any question. They will also provide small samples if you are not sure which beer you will like best. Once you have your beer, you can then head out to the outdoor picnic tables in the back of the building where you can meet other people, pet dogs with the owners’ permission, and listen to live music if any happens to be playing. If there is no live band on the outdoor stage, you will be treated to a continuous feed of classic rock- the perfect sound when you’re enjoying beer.
Guests at new Republic Brewing can expect to find about 7 to 10 beers on tap and if you want to try them all, they serve flight samplers. I decided to seek out only the beers I have not already tasted and I found many delicious beers in the bunch. If you need something else to do, they even have board games to play and it is common to find a beer truck outside, serving food. If you like, you can bring your own food from the outside.
The temperatures, I would imagine, can get quite toasty at New Republic Brewing during the warm months of the year as there is no climate control. The weather was near perfect when I visited and we arrived early, when there were very few others present. The experience was positive overall and while I would have liked a better selection of both indoor and outdoor seating, this is still a cool place and definitely something worth adding to your College Station agenda.

New Republic Brewery is always a great time. The brews are good, company awesome, food was excellent. Band Manic Raze was absolutely fantastic! We wanted to listen all night, it was that good!

Large variety of beers for every taste inclination. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Dogs are welcomed, the outdoor 'beer garden' is very dog friendly. Great stage for live entertainment.

We met up here one rainy evening on a double date and stayed less than an hour. It does have plenty of coverage and seating, but we decided to sit upstairs so we could get a view of the facilities while we all tried our samples. The smell was overwhelming. It smelt like there were sewage issues when walking in, but we were hoping as we went upstairs and further away from the bathrooms it might have gotten fainter. It didn't. I don't think it really was sewage, but possibly just the rain not letting the building air out or something. The issue with the extremely unpleasant smell was I have no idea what the beer actually tasted like. They were all horrendous, but I know that the smell took over my senses and left me blind to the taste. We had a stout lover, an IPA snob, a sour lover and someone who only likes light and brown ales and none of us liked a single option. It was disappointing and we all just wanted to get out of there as fast as possible. No idea what that smell was but it ruined the experience for us and I hope it gets fixed soon.
Also, a note about it's location. Apple and Google maps almost had us going into someone's house on that pitch black country road. We passed it twice before we realized the dirt path next to the house was not a driveway, but another country road and we saw the tiny signage that we only saw after u-turning and coming from a different direction.

New Republic is difficult to find. Load it in your GPS. Beer purchases are in the brewery. Seating is outside. Food is available from the occasional visiting food truck.
Entertainment is highly variable. The bands range from pretty good to absolutely horrible.
The atmosphere is comfortable and friendly. Children are welcome and there is plenty of room for them to play. At times there are too many dogs wandering around.

The New Republic is a cool place. They host fun events and they have food trucks and a cool back area. I enjoyed the winery! It was very relaxing, people brought their dogs and they have awesome wine! Award winning! A hidden jewel!

So I'm in college station for training and I find New Republic being served at a happy hour for our class. I begin to chat with Aaron Deering the marketing & social media guy for the brewery. We actually go to dinner and continue to talk as the brewery isn't open while we are here for the training.
Aaron agrees to open the brewery on an off night for the class to come out and experience the brewery's! That is awesome customer service! It is very nice to see such great customer service!
Keep brewing great beer and having an awesome attitude.

New Republic Brewery opened for business in 2011. Operated by a pair of home-brewers whose hobby got to big for their homes they decided to go into business as a nanobrewery (they believed themselves too small to be considered a microbrewery) in order to continue growing their hobby.
Avid do-it-yourselfers much of the equipment in the brewery was built or modified in-house. The brewery has grown considerably since it was founded, but the work done by the owners gives the space a rustic, personal atmosphere instead of the sanitary, factory/laboratory feeling many larger breweries project.
New Republic Brewery is an operating brewery most of the week, and while the staff are welcoming of visitors during production hours there is no gift shop or hospitality room to accomodate walk-ins. Guests are encouraged to visit during the weekend "Taproom" events. These take place on Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoon. The times of the Taproom change with the season, so check the business website for times and to see what food and entertainment options there will be (www.newrepublicbrewing.com). Usually there is live music for entertainment and one of a number of local food trucks will be present until they run out of food. The first Sunday Taproom of every month is "Board Game Day." As it sounds several regular visitors bring assorted board and card games to pass the time. There are usually three to six varities of beers available on-tap depending on what has been produced and whether there is a seasonal beer or not.
If you decide to go to a taproom keep in mind that there is neither central heat nor air conditioning. The doors of the building are opened in the warmer months for ventillation, and during the winter months patio heaters are used for comfort. Bring bug spray and sunscreen.
New Republic products are available in bottles and cans in Bryan/College Station, Conroe, and Houston currently with new retailers added regularly.

If you want to see good old American entrepreneurship at work (and have some great beer) you should take a short trip out of the posh-ness of College Station and down the country road to New Republic Brewing and visit with Dean, one of the founders and brew-engineers. Its the real deal without any tourist trappings or stupid prices. These guys are making it happen and growing, so stop by and have some fresh beer, get a mug or a shirt and a picture with the owners cause one day you can say.... "I went there when they were just getting going". And there is a guy next door distilling local Texas whiskey. Hey, its a little off the beaten path so trust your GPS.

The beer here is great, but the facilities leave something to be desired. We sat out back but had to go inside because the smell from the porta-potties was so strong. There isn't much seating inside, & the one bathroom is for women only. Men have to use the porta-potties. I was hoping for something nice given how far from campus it is.
