A very beautiful church in the heart of a peaceful cemetery. A fairly steep climb allows access and you also have to find the priest to get the keys! Having passed these obstacles, we do not regret the efforts because we have here a real little gem both for the architecture and the well-preserved paintings on the wooden walls of the building.

Church of the Holy Paraskeva is rustic church surrounded by a small cemetery entered through a finely carved wooden gate. The church is named after Saint Paraskeva of the Balkans, a 10th century female saint who renounced her family's riches to pursue an ascetic life. The church was built between 1770 and 1780, and is typical of wooden country churches in the MaramureĹź area, with steeply sloped roof (to shed snow), tall triangular spire covering the bell tower, and stout oak walls. The inside surfaces are almost completely covered in simple but vibrant ecclesiastical murals painted directly on the wood by Radu Munteanu and Gheorghe Zugravul in 1780. Alexandru Ponehalschi painted the icons and iconostasis between 1778 and 1780. Notable pictures include the Crucifixion and old testament stories such as Adam & Eve and Sodom & Gomorrah. The bell tower and the exterior walls of the church were seriously damaged by a lightning strike in 1925, but were repaired; the interior paintings were carefully cleaned in the 1990s. St. Paraschiva's Church is one of seven churches in MaramureĹź County listed as a UNESCO heritage site. When I visited, I was struck by the peaceful setting of the church and its tree-shaded cemetery as a statement of community faith over the centuries.

Parking with some parking spaces at the foot of the hill on which the church stands. Church without nails from 1770. When we arrived it was closed, the caretaker's telephone number was on the door, but we didn't want to call and wait for him to arrive, so we took a look from outside. We were leaving when a little girl arrived and let us know that she had the key to open the door. Very beautiful inside, really worth it. There was nothing written on the door about payment, we gave 10 lei to the little girl (about 2 euros) who took them looking at us very amazed

After visiting 6 out of the 7 Wooden Churches, protected by UNESCO in Maramures area (Biserica de Lemn), I have to say that the one in Desesti is my favourite for the absolutely amazing painting of the interior.
Stunning! You should really stop and see. It’s easy to get to, as it’s only 200m from the main road Baia Mare-Sighetu

I’m giving this 4 stars because we were unable to go in, but I’m sure it’s worth it because the outside is very nice.
It’s a very quiet place on Sundays, local people attend church, visiting the graves of their loved ones as they walk up the hill path to attend the services.
Sooooo, if you go on Sunday respectfully walk the grounds, don’t stare at people rudely, don’t take photos as they light memorial candles. Can you tell we saw tourists doing these things? It was unacceptable! Please show respect- doesn’t matter if it’s not your faith or if their traditions don’t jive with your beliefs... you’re entering their place of worship the minute you walk through the gate. :)

The church is a couple of centuries old, up a small hill. I'd say this is a hidden gem as it's quite beautifully preserved.

Nice location, great views, impressive architecture, well preserved. Unfortunately closed, so we could not get inside.

You've got to like ancient churches and ancient frescoes and understand Orthodox iconography to get the most out of visiting the wooden churches of Maramures. We found the area charming and in April we were the only tourists we saw

You must see the wooded churches and be amazed at the wooden slates that the roof is made of. You can also see the internal structure by climbing up the spire

We were fortunate to pass by this beautiful UNESCO wooden church on a Sunday to see the people in local outfits attending their services. The people were very welcoming and pleasant. The church is located on a hillside above the village with parking available.
