I would love to give a great review but sadly the customer service and communication is terrible. We were booked today 9/11 to go on the noon ride. After driving 341 miles for the “bucket list” experience for my daughters 12th birthday we arrived to a locked door with a hand written sign that stated due to extreme temperature forecast noon rides were canceled today. I respect their choice to cancel due to heat and safety for their animals but considering they were able to send a conformation email and text yesterday on the 10th then they would have been able to notify if they were canceling. Yes they refunded our money but we were still out about 10 hours of driving and two tanks of gas all because they could not call, text, or email. Two minutes out of their morning to call us would have saved us hours on the road and about 80$ in gas plus the disappointment of my daughters birthday plans ruined.

A very brief intro by the owner then Megan took us nose to tail down into the canyon. Beautiful scenery and being on horseback made it even better.
Horses took no notice of us when we tried to get them to veer an inch from the horse in front so it did feel a bit like a pony trek.
Horses had strange masks on for some reason (they didn’t on the other place we rode).

Recently took my teen daughter to ride in the canyon. Having horses myself and having ridden at stables numerous times I was shocked to show up and be informed that every person would be weighed prior to riding. Normally I would have objected but do to my daughters excitement chose to. I saw several female wranglers helping in the store and thought well surely one of them will do it. But no, the person weighing everyone was an extremely rude male. I stepped on the scales and once weighed he says Oh boy just one pound away from being able to go! And just muttered and sighed to himself. In front of everyone!!! I was mortified. I could not believe the audacity of this guy. I literally have never been so horrified at the treatment I received. This is not the way you treat customers!!! I will never be back. From someone who has packed 400lbs of elk out of a wilderness I'm no fool. I know what these horses are capable of. It was obvious to me that the horses were not well taken care of, the tack certainly wasn't. You would be much better off visiting the stables at the top of the canyon. If they weren't already booked up we would have.

We enjoyed our trail ride with Old West Stables so much - even the non-horse lovers in our group! The horses are all very well taken care of and in good condition, and the owners are very nice and accommodating. We had so much fun we didn't want the ride to end.

There is nothing flashy about this, but it was a very neat experience. My wife had never ridden a horse so this was a great opportunity. This is appropriate for people of all riding abilities as the horses follow the leader the entire time. It lasts about an hour and was a very enjoyable activity in the canyon.

We drove route 66 and I would mark this as my number one experience. The staff were wonderful and we all enjoyed chatting with them. They were very clear in there briefing and we saw that this is an activity for adults and children. It is a slow walk on a track the horses know well. The horse go in their own order and all you need to do is hold on and enjoy - which I did. My horse Lloyd's was a beautiful blonde and I am glad I was paired with him. Of corse these are animals so there is a small risk buy from everything I saw it is low. If you can do this you should the best way to see the canyon.

We weren't sure exactly where the stables were, because there actually were two corrals so we were a little late to arrive. They said that was no problem. They were friendly and explained how to ride for those who were novice. The ride was perfect. Heard coyotes yipping out in the canyon and later caught a glimpse of them. Had a covey of quail fly up in our path and the horses did great. The horses were plenty tall for some of our leggier riders. The guides told us of the terrain, plants and a little of the history. Perfect for newbies, no great hills to climb. Highly recommend.

Our family of five enjoyed riding with Old West Stables. We were all inexperienced and two of the kids had never been on a horse. They did a great job of matching us up with horses and calming down my 7 year old who started to get scared and almost had a melt down during the first 5 minutes. She ended up have a great time and said she'd do it again! This stable is inside the state park. The ride is great for beginners with no super steep ups or downs. The ride is basic - no commentary or tour- but that was fine with us. We enjoyed just looking at the scenery and enjoying our ride. All the staff were very polite and pleasant to be with. And price was good.

We've wanted to do this ride since our son started at Texas Tech two years ago and finally got it done. The staff is very nice. The horses are very mellow. You are head tail the entire time, and the horses follow each other and the leader pretty much no matter what you do. It is very good for beginners and anyone who just wants to get on a horse for an hour. But if you are looking for more freedom to not stay in a strict line the entire time, this isn't the ride for you.
