About
Torr Na Lochs (tore nah locks) Vineyard and Winery overlooks Inks and Buchanan Lakes in the Highland Lakes area of the Texas Hill Country. The name translates from the Gaelic language to "hill over lakes" and describes the site perfectly. Our objective is to grow grapes suited for our terroir and produce wines from only Texas grown fruit.

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Texas Hill Country, this winery offers wine by the glass, by the bottle, and wine tastings. We got 7 pours (a small sample) for $15/person. Had fun trying different wines. The place was hopping on a Saturday but staff was friendly, knowledgeable. Visit when the weather is nice for amazing views, Don't rush, take the time to enjoy the wine and the day. Worth the visit.

My husband and I moved to TX (my home state) from CA last July. After a number of years in CA, one of the things I thought I'd miss most was the CA wineries / wines. By September, we'd found this winery and joined the wine club. The views are AMAZING, the owners/staff are friendly with a great story about the history of the winery and the wines are very good. Okay, yes, we do miss SOME of the CA wines / wineries but... we weren't able to get to the wineries there often as it was too much work to get to them from LA on a regular basis. We're close enough to TNL to make an afternoon trip there (even for only a couple of hours) whenever we desire to do so. A favorite wine there is the Montepulciano but... we also love the Fion Dearg as a great every day wine. We're THRILLED to have made this find!

The view up here is awesome! Try to visit when you can sit comfortably outside and enjoy it! They do get packed even on Sunday, so get there early, close to opening time to get a good seat and best service. There were Longhorns waiting to greet us when we pulled up, which was super cool! Their wine is ok, not as good as the view, but they are still pretty young, we will check back when new vintages come out. Staff was all very friendly.

We saw the sign on our way to Fredericksburg. Decided to stop. Drove up a long driveway not knowing what to expect. This winery was hopping. Patio and bar area was packed. The dog was running around. They were very friendly poured us a tasting and we got a platter with fruit and cheese and crackers. The view was wonderful too. Just a great winery with some great wine. Wish we lived closer.

We joined another couple at Torr Na Lochs for a wine tasting on a cold and blustery day. This winery’s setting overlooking 2 lakes and beautiful Hill Country Texas is amazing. The wine tasting was really unexpectedly terrific. We focused on the reds, and ended up purchasing half a case of Syrah, Tempranillo, and a nice blend. The serving staff was friendly and knowledgeable. This place is a bit out of the way, but definitely worth a day trip if you are in the area.

This is a small beautiful facility worth visiting just for the beauty. Sadly the wines were at best average for Texas and distinctly inferior to better Texas wineries. Wine quality is uneven and tastes as though it is heavily manipulated to achieve drinkability. This was the conclusion of three couples - all having cellars of over 500 bottles. We loved the place but the wines left a lot to be desired. The staff poses a problem also for they don't seem to know much about the wines, the grape sourcing, the wine making, or wines in general and provided highly questionable answers to questions. This is probably not a problem to most visitors but did for us. And there are facets of the "story" that simply don't add up - like making an "award winning Estate Syrah" from one year old vines when vines should not be allowed to make grapes the year after they are planted. Weird!

Thank you for visiting Torr Na Lochs and providing feedback on your experience. With regard to our staff, we do provide training to our staff to answer basic questions about our wine, but also instruct them to find one of the owners to come to tables where the questions are more detailed. Unfortunately, it appears you visited on one of the few days when no owners were present in the winery and therefore did not get the detailed answers you desired. Due to our time living in Asia, our wine tastes and styles are influenced by the Australian wines we drank while living in the region. This is a more fruit forward style of wine with minimal oak character from barrel aging (typically 40% new oak aged 9 months). Our wine contains no additives to manipulate flavor as we prefer the inherent characteristics of the fruit to be expressed in the wine. With regard to our Estate Syrah, it was produced from second leaf vines and won a sliver medal and Texas Reserve Class Champion at Houston Livestock Show Uncorked wine competition as well as a sliver medal at the Texsom International wine competition. Although it may seem weird to achieve this level of award from second leaf vines, this was accomplished with substantial and nontraditional preparation in our vineyard. In summary, we spent two years preparing the vineyard prior to planting our 2000 vines which included augering a 12" diameter 3' deep hole for each plant and placing compost at the bottom of the hole prior to backfilling. Furthermore, each vine was individually dipped in Mycorrhizae, a beneficial fungus that promotes root growth, prior to planting. Finally, we fertilized with organic fish and seaweed as well as top dressed vine rows with compost and selectively dropped fruit to limit total yield to about 2 tons per acre. All of these efforts are not typical of large scale vineyard operations due to the cost and time involved, but did result in us achieving vines with substantial vigor and root structure that yielded quality fruit that we used to produce award winning wines on second leaf. These efforts are documented in a slideshow in the gallery section of our website if you desire to see more detail. As owners we regret that we were not in the winery the day of your visit resulting in your experience not being of the typical high standard we strive to achieve and hope you will return one day allowing us to answer all your questions to your satisfaction.
