Visited Dewberry Farm on a Saturday (henceforth in this review to be identified as DF) the week before Halloween with some senior citizen friends.

Got there about mid morning before the crowds showed up

They have TSA style roped ticket purchaser lines but they were empty as there were just a handful of folks in line ahead of us.

I took one look at the ticket pricing above the ticket windows and said to myself this must have a lot going for it with those prices!

The group rate was sorta reasonable 28 bucks for 15 or more. There were 22 of us so we qualified. But for individuals and families (less than 15) the prices were..oh no..but here again with pricey entrance fees this place must be special.

They put the little plastic bracelets on our wrists and all of sudden we found ourselves walking through the front gate.

Immediately to our right was The General Store where we found the usual suspects ....tired,touristy merchandise...mugs, jewelry, license plate holders, stuffed animals, wall signs, tree ornaments, etc that looked so familiar because you saw them in every gift shop you've ever walked into.

After a while I noticed that in order to ride the train and some of the other rides you need tokens. $3 dollars per token.

I could have taken the hay truck ride to the pumpkin patch like my companions but I like to walk.

Anyway they must have had an acre or two pretty much covered with pumpkins that you bought by the pound. Behind that was the Christmas tree farm...lots of trees.

I walked to the other side of the road and there it was...the cornfield maze. Never been in one so I wandered around for about 10 minutes and found my way out. Fun.

The rest room situation is kind of funny.

They have the men's and women's restrooms in two separate ...how do you say...sheds..yeah wooden sheds..with 4 private stalls each with porches where you wash your hands in a long ceramic trough like sink. My skills at turning on the valve for the water were sadly lacking...but thanks to the fellow ahead of me washing his hands...who was kind in showing me how it worked..so..before you could say Old MacDonald I had the water spigot operating procedure down so well it looked like I knew what I was doing.

I walked by what looked like a park ranger...probably a farm ranger..inviting folks to pet the rat snake she had draped around her arms. I said no thanks.

There were other snakes including a rattler in this educational display...yes the rattler and other venemous hissers were in glass cages.

I wandered around noting the various rides and farm animal exhibits.

Here's my take on DF:

PROS:

This is place is mainly for young families ..but folks of all ages probably would find it interesting or strange or both ...particularly grandparents would enjoy seeing their GK's having fun.

Upon exiting DF no doubt many a little tike would be heard excitedly questioning their parents .."Can we go back to Dewberry Farm tomorrow? Can we? Can we?

Sausage on a stick is good.

Kiddie train and Slide Hill are probably the most popular attractions.

CONS:

I note other reviewers concerns about safety on some of the attractions.
I was nervous watching the manually operated (bicycle pedaling) ride that, the more energy it is fed results in its circular motion growing faster and expanding at a rapid rate.. There was no barrier to prevent a child or adult from getting clobbered by the thing.

The place is has a kind of worn out look to it..a more proper term would be rustic. But then its a farm. Whadaya expect?

It is quite obvious that ownership believes in the golden rule of business: keep overhead low and profits high. The DF powers at be are adept at keeping the overhead low and with those admission prices I would assume they must be making some kind of profit.

To sum things up..IMHO DF is OK ..sorta.

After all..its a farm so its nutnfancy.

In my opinion there are some really dangerous activities at this place. My son is 3 years old and I had to stay on him like a hawk the entire time we were there. People can say all they want that parents should watch their kids blah blah blah and I do watch mine but the reality is there are a lot of daycare groups that go to this place and I fail to see how the daycare employees and chaperones along on those trips can supervise all those kids in the same way I supervise my son. I am only watching him, not several kids at once. It is doubtful that many daycare groups have one chaperone per child.

Here were my observations from today. There is this big fort thing off to the left when you first enter the farm that you climb all over and it has slides coming off it. For the most part the areas that are high off the ground are well enclosed but there is a fireman's pole that kids have to walk around to get to one of the slides. This opening is about 8 ft off the ground. That is as high as some ceilings. There is a plastic barrier around a portion of the opening that looks kind of like a plastic barrel that has been cut up to fit around the hole but here is still an opening on one side so that kids can grab hold of the pole and slide down. There is no employees in this area to supervise, at least I didn't see any when I was there. Considering what a free for all this place is (every age group is on this fort thing) I feel that this fireman pole was a really bad idea. It would not take much for a kid to fall down the hole and as far as I could tell there was no net under the hole and there was nothing to break a fall. A kid could possibly break their neck if they fell though the hole. If I ran Dewberry Farm and I had to have a fireman's pole I would have put it separate from everything else and I would have put an age minimum on it and I would have two employees man it at all times. One up top and one down below. I would also put it on a surface that was similar to a bounce house. With the prices they are charging for general admission on the weekends they could afford to hire some more staff.

Then there is this ride that involves what looks like mooring buoys tied to rope that are then hung off of what looks like a hot walker. A hot walker is the thing you see people tie horses to. It has 5 or so arms on it that stick out from the center and the whole thing spins so the horses are forced to walk in a circle while their bridle is tied to one of the arms. This may seem like a good idea for a ride but when you factor in centrifugal force and the fact that no employees were present at this ride, at least I never saw any when I was there, and all age groups are mixed in, it could be a recipe for disaster. I only let my son ride on this ride when nobody else was on it and each time another group would come along I would pull him off (and he would scream) since some people would get this thing spinning incredibly fast. The faster this thing spins the further you will get flung if you fall off. There is nothing under this ride to break someone's fall if they happen to let go or just get flung off. You basically sit on the mooring buoy thing and hold onto the rope that it's hanging from the hot walker thing and someone, who is standing on the ground, spins the thing around. Again, this ride would be great if it was over something that would break someone's fall. I also think there should be an age limit on this ride since not all kids, like my 3 year old, have much of a sense of danger yet. A height restriction would not work so well since my 3 year old is already the height of the average 5 year old. It would have to be an age restriction to make it safer since a sense of danger comes with age. I guess the employees at the gate where you get your tickets could ask what each kids' age is and then write it on a wrist band and then employees working the ride could enforce the age minimum by not letting kids who were below X age ride. The only reason I let him on this ride at all was because he rode it when nobody else was on it. Yes, you are supposed to stay with your group but that is besides the point. I was surprised how fast some people were spinning small children on this ride and a lot of these kids didn't have a parent there to say no since they were with a daycare group.

Then there is this slide that is made out of white PVC pipe. The bottom of the slide that you slide on is made of PVC pipe and it's assembled in a way that your roll your butt across the pipe and it moves you along as you go down the slide. The sides of the slide seemed to be okay as far as height go but the deck to get on the slide is probably 12 ft off the ground and I feel that the area where you enter the slide could be much better secured. I went up on the platform with my son each time since I was worried he would fall over the edge as he was getting onto the slide portion of the slide. At one point there were way too many kids up top too. Most were daycare kids since they were all wearing the same shirt that listed their daycare on it. A farm employee should really be stationed at this slide to enforce crowd control. I could see a kid getting shoved off this platform or down the stairs you have to climb to access the slide.

I think that Dewberry Farm is a quaint and cute idea. I just think they could implement better safety measures. If my kid was in daycare there is no way I would let him go to this place on a field trip without me there to supervise him on the rides mentioned above. I would not feel safe with him at this place with a single person watching 5 kids that were all the same age as him. I had to keep my undivided attention on him today. We didn't get much further than what I listed above since by this time I was ready to go so I can't speak for the rest of the park but those are the safety improvements I would make if I owned this place. All I can say is, their liability insurance must cost a fortune.

Located in the country just a short drive from Katy, Texas, Dewberry Farm is a kid- friendly creation that brings together the natural setting of a working farm with a few simple rides and other entertainment. Children and families can enjoy some simple, non- motorized fun, ride on one of the small trains or wagon, pet the goats, race rubber ducks, or partake in other activities.

Dewberry Farm will be enjoyed by most children and this is often reason enough to pack up the minivan and head west of Houston to this country destination. Kids like the slides, the zip lines, and other things and most will not mind a ride on the train, particularly during the Halloween or Christmas season when Dewberry Farm has special activities planned like navigating a corn maze or selecting and cutting down your own Christmas tree. There is enough kiddie- type fun to make kids happy and most who visit will quickly proclaim their desire to visit again.

So, with what seems like much to offer, are there any drawbacks to Dewberry Farm? I’m afraid the answer is yes. One is that the base admission doesn’t include all of the rides- some require paying an extra fee and that means purchasing tokens. You can purchase a more expensive pass that covers everything, but it is quite costly for a day on the farm. Then, there is the mud. Pockets of mud can appear when you least expect them and the place is really dirty after a good rain. If you visit, make sure to have the kids wear their least- liked, most worn out shoes because there is a chance they will need to be discarded after visiting. Other issues I have with Dewberry Farm are the rudeness of some of the staff, the price of food and drink, and the lack of employee supervision on some of the rides. The rides are simple enough, but some of them can cause troubles for youngsters and without any employees present to help out, you need to stay close and run to the rescue, if necessary.

Still, in spite of its obvious flaws, kids love Dewberry Farm and most any child will highly recommend the “awesome” experience. So, considering all factors pro and con, I’m going to rate this attraction average overall. It could stand to be improved, but it is a reasonably acceptable place to go for an afternoon outing.

We brought our 1 year old here and had a great time. We visited during the Christmas tree shopping time, but there were a lot of attractions available (most of which were free to Christmas tree shoppers, and some of which required tokens). The only “token” activity we did was the train, which was a nice long ride around the farm. Other than that, our boy was entertained for hours with the slides, animals, playhouses, forts, and just sitting on the benches to enjoy nature and have a snack (concessions available). This was a fun, unique experience, especially for such a short drive from Houston. You won’t find lots of safety precautions here, and some toys/equipment are a little worse for wear, but hey it’s a farm! Highly recommend visiting for tree shopping - the farm was very lightly attended, so there were no lines for the fun!

Had my child's party here. It was a disaster from beginning to end! Worker at the gate was on the phone while all of our guests arrived, and he directed them all the wrong way. No one to help with party, show you where things are, but made sure they got their money. (Birthday coordinator stayed in her little building the whole time, and even called us while we were still there to tell us to come pay.) Also, we told the coordinator that we were paying for everyone that showed up to the party, but she still told our guests that they weren't on our list when they arrived. Rude! They get you in, and then you're on your own. After $20 for watered down lemonade, and over $120 for gross frozen pizzas, we made our way to the sub par activities. That's where we realized that admission for our huge whole group didn't include all of the activities there. They wanted an extra $3 per child per activity (on to of the $258 we had already spent.) All about the money at this place. When I called to speak to the owner, Mary, she was extremely rude. When I told her I didn't appreciate her rudeness, and that we wouldn't be back, she laughed and hung up on me! I couldn't believe it. Horrible experience, and terrible way to treat customers who spend their hard earned money here! Never again!

Save your money and go elsewhere. Dewberry Farm is an utter ripoff. After paying an admission price, you then have to purchase a $19 bracelet per person so they can actually participate in the "attractions". Sadly, nothing here was worth that $19. An example: A plastic drain pipe hanging from the ceiling that your children can sit on and swing.

My 2 year old was admitted to the farm for free but was charged $3 to jump on an inflatable trampoline for 5 minutes. And you can't pay with real money -- you have to buy tokens. Do you think you can buy as many tokens as you need? Nope. You have to buy tokens in $5 increments. So my 2 year old's 5 minutes on the trampoline cost $5. They did not charge for my admission because I had to supervise him (obviously). Here's where they completely lost me -- 20 feet away was another attraction where the 2 year old was FREE but they wanted to charge ME $3 worth of tokens. WHAT?! Make up your minds!

The staff is rude. There is no public water fountain that we could find and a bottle of water costs $2 -- in, yes you guessed it, TOKENS.

The attractions have some serious safety issues. Do NOT leave your child unattended, especially if you have young children.

In summary, avoid this ripoff. Avoid at all costs. Your money and time (and safety!) are too precious.

We expected to wait in line, but the farm is grossly understaffed which added to our frustration. Three people are available when you purchase tickets for hundreds of visitors. The facility is great if you are able to enjoy it. We couldn't because we were waiting in line most of the time. I've been to numerous festivals, theme parks etc, but I have never waited in line for an hour for "festival" fast food. Again, because they were understaffed.
When I asked for a refund two very unprofessional "managers" sarcastically asked me if I had suggestions as to how they could decrease the lines. I gave them several suggestions that mostly included hiring more people. Preparing some of the food earlier. Creating separate lines at each booth for the variety of foods that take less time to prepare, thus reducing the line.
If they aren't going to let people with small children bring in outside food they should have the ability to serve your food in less than an hour. It was obvious they're greed was more important than service. The irony is that they would make more money if you could get through the food line faster and pay for all of the additional activities that your admission doesn't cover.
Get new management that is visible on the premises alleviating the issues rather than hanging out in the air conditioned Country Store.
So disappointed! We drove so far, were looking forward to our visit for a month, such potential!

I called to understand why they canceled my kid's school field trip last minute, considering parent took the day off and school was all prepared for this trip. I called and asked to speak to head of operation and the lady that picked up told me she was head of operation. (Mary) I asked her last name and wouldn't give me her last name...Wow!! She told me they canceled the trip due to rain coming, so far no rain just clouds. I understand if weather forecast thunderstorm and lighting but clouds. I'm shocked to see an organization this big to have such bad customer service operation mgr.

I wrote the following to the management. This should give you an idea of my expereince:
"I am honestly shocked at how terrible your "farm" is. The founders/owners should be ashamed of themselves - I hold them accountable for our horrible experience. Consider the following:
1. After we pre-purchased tickets one day prior, we still had to wait in line for one hour, only to be greeted by two of your terrible employees. I was even told that I had printed out that wrong form to show proof of my ticket purchase. This was extremely frustrating considering the fact that the form I brought showed proof of the money I had spent and the number of military tickets I purchased. My wife and I should have just left at this point, but curiosity got the best of us.
2. I had to change my son's diaper on the floor of your disgusting bathrooms. Not one of your employees could tell me where a diaper changing table was, so I had no other choice. Next time, I will just change his diaper on the flat surface next to the ticket counter. Maybe that will provide ample warning to the people trying to get in. Furthermore, the bathrooms ran out of toilet paper. Are you kidding me? It wasn't even 2pm yet. I didn't realize that I should have brought a pack of toilet paper for my family of five.
3. You have several signs that successfully tell customers to wash their hands after touching animals. You even provide wash-stations that are easily accessible. However, you failed to provide the soap for customers to wash their hands. It looks like soap was provided at one point, but your greedy, cheap company isn't capable of re-filling the soap containers.
My wife and I will warn as many people as humanly possible to stay away from your terrible company. At some point, you will go out of business, which will actually be a good thing for the public."

We took our 3 year old grandchild for Halloween. The price was way too much for what you get. Everything is dated and not kept up to a acceptable? level. She got a free pumpkin so she was happy. I ended up broke.. Will not return for any holiday
