The falls are beautiful and I love that it’s so shallow and crystal clear at the bottom of the falls.

However, be warned that in places IMHO the trail is pretty dangerous. If you follow the trail to the left from the parking lot (shorter distance) it’s good most of the way until the end, where you encounter an extremely steep decline mostly made of slippery rocks and tree roots and no railing except for a few select spots. Pretty dangerous, I’ve seen a lot of people fall here and I’ve had several friends who straight up refused to go any further. If you choose to go the long way (choose the path that goes right if you’re coming from the parking lot), it’s a lot longer walk and you kinda feel lost. It’s mostly a lot easier of a hike that way, but there is one spot where you come up upon a gorge/ledge and it’s quite dangerous for kids in that spot, there are no railings and it’s very narrow.

I wish someone would have informed me about these things before I went the first time. Especially if you have young kiddos or older family members I would seriously consider this before going. It is beautiful though!

The falls are extraordinary! The water is clear and cold. The falls beautiful to stand at the bottom of or be at the top lookout. The trails were free of downed limbs but are natural so you have tree roots on them. However many places the tree roots help as a natural step or keep you from sliding. If you want to go right up to the bases of the falls where flip flops or water shoes. I took my socks and shoes off which was fine but my feet are delicate and I wished I had some to put on. My sister used a walking stick to cross the rocks with more balance. My son in his work boots had no issues crossing the rocks. There are several loops and trails with some signage and some spray paint dots on the trees. We did not get lost.

Be sure and hike the adjacent trails in addition to the Machine Falls Loop. They're all wonderful hikes - and the entire visit will take less than 3 hours. The only steep parts are near the falls themselves, so the rest of these trails are pleasant and easy. Enjoy the creeks, too! Parking is difficult on weekends.

Stopped by this wonderful waterfall while in the area and fell in love. The waterfall was breathtaking and not too crowded. The hike in was all downhill and the exit was all uphill. It’s definitely worth a visit, enjoyed walking right up to the falls for pictures.

Well marked loop trail to main falls but read up on it first as there are several side trails you may or may not want to take. Trail down to falls is quite steep but there are steps to help you down. Dog friendly as long as on a leash. Even better with lots of water from rain. Overlook takes you to top of main falls. Well worth the trip. About 1 hour 20 minutes from Nashville. Able to see these and Rutledge Falls on same day easily.

To get there we used the maps navigation on iPhone and typed in "Machine Falls". It came up on Short Springs Rd in Tullahoma, TN. We parked in a lot off the country road near a big water tower thing. Then we walked across the road to the trail which was clearly marked. The main attraction is the waterfall called Machine Falls. But to get there, the hike is fun too! We took the more direct, yet rugged trail. However it was do-able even for the youngest one in our family- 8 year old. We are an active family, so not sure how this particular trail would be for the non-active participants! Some of the trail was pretty steep but there were stairs and rails for the worst parts. Once at the bottom it was easy to get to the falls themselves and the water at the bottom of the falls wasn't deep when we were there in August. One thing I really liked about it is that it was free, the falls were gorgeous, it wasn't crowded and we were there on a Sunday around lunch, and we saw a lot of pretty flowers along the trails. I would have liked to bike the trail, but we didn't bring our bikes and I don't think we could have managed it anyway-too rugged, steep, and I believe there was a sign that said no bikes. We packed a backpack with waters & lunch and my husband and I ate our lunch on a big rock by the falls while our kids explored around and took photos. We will definitely go back!!

We took a day trip to the Jack Daniels Distillery from Nashville. Someone at our condo rental wrote about the falls in our book and since it was only a 20 min drive from JD, we decided to check it out. I am so glad we did, it was beautiful! The hike down using the Machine Falls Loop was about 15 mins or so. It wasn't too bad but was pretty steep in parts. The trail is very well maintained and the reward of the falls is definitely worth the hike down. The hike back following the loop was a little rough for me but I'm 31 and not in the best of shape. It took us about 30-45 mins to get back but we did stop by the falls overlook as well. If I would have known the hike back would have been the way it was, I would have went back the way we came down. It was steep but not as long. Still, worth every minute of the hike! It's a must do!

After reading reviews we went counterclockwise on the machine falls trail (black and white) it was a short hike to the falls then a steep descent, there are stairs in some parts but be sure to wear shoes with decent tread. There was a young couple in front of us and one of them fell on the way down. Trail wouldn’t be good for those with disability or knee issues. My husband carried our 15 month old down the trail so it is possible but definitely not easy. Okay for elementary school kids too, we saw several that made it down. Shoes that are waterproof or ones that can get wet and still hike are best because you’ll likely get your feet a little wet getting up to the falls.

The falls are not the biggest falls in Tennessee but are still worth the trip. The trail is fairly well marked and is in decent shape. There is plenty of parking in the parking lot by the water tower

First, the falls are spectacular. The trail is about 1 1/2 miles from the trail-head. It gets very steep at the end, so beware. I would not recommend doing it on a rainy day or when the ground is wet- might be slippery. There are some steps to help, but some of these are loose.
