Having been and forged items three years ago, we hoped for a repeat of a great time.
This year we stopped in, but there were eight people already waiting to understand what to do. The rather grumpy woman behind the counter was not greeting guests nor did she offer any guidance. We waited for about four minutes while people stood around awkwardly then we left.
The experience, once you’re in the queue, is fun and memorable. Perhaps a different person managing the incoming requests/guests would be a good idea. Perhaps business is so good they can afford to not acknowledge people waiting to schedule a time? Considering the guys are so personable and patient, it was a surprising development.
Try your luck and check it out, it gets better once you’re working with the guys out at the fires.

We selected this activity as a birthday gift for our 9 year old who is interested in history. Both he and our 7 year old were guided through the process of turning a railway nail into a small knife. They were given protective glasses and a leather apron to keep them safe. Their guide did all of the dangerous work, while instructing the kids when/how to hammer on the nail in order to flatten/shape it. At the end, we were able to (for a charge) engrave the knife with the kids names and date. The whole project was on the expensive side, but it was such a unique experience! The kids loved it and as parents we enjoyed watching them and felt they were very safe during the process. Would definitely recommend for kids or adults (they had more advanced projects for older audiences as well).

The “Dream Knife Package” with Robby at Iron Mountain Metal Works was more than an incredible experience … I cannot say enough about how amazing my time at the forge was. My wife bought me the dream knife package for Christmas. I was surprised when I arrived at the forge and was told the forge was mine for the day. Robby & his staff were extremely helpful and listened to my ideas in designing my knife. This was more than someone just telling me what to do to make a knife - I was taught step by step exactly what to do and why. I gained so much knowledge about the types of metal we were using, each machine used and the entire process. They made sure I toughly understood everything along the way. The entire day was a completely personal experience. I truly ended up with the knife of my dreams – my design, built with my 2 hands.
I really enjoyed how they welcomed me in right from the beginning and made me feel like one of the “forge gang”. I now consider them all my friends. I highly recommend Robby, his staff & forge!

Amazing find. I was searching for something "cool" and different for 17 yr old son. Ran across online and boy and I glad. Forged in Fire
participant and fan fav Robby Bowman owns and runs this shop. My son was lucky enough to get Robby as his instructor.
It tool about 40 minutes. My son hammered and twisted a great knife and a life long memory for $85. You can make other cheaper knives for as little as $15. Kids 12 and under have a special knife.
This is a MUST with teen boys. My husband, brother in law and nephew where all jealous.
Call for reservations it books quick.
You can just go watch for free too

We like to watch Forged in Fire and we remember Mr. Bowman on the show, but that is not why we picked this activity. My husband picked it thinking it would be fun to do together and he was right. I wasn't sure at first but Mr. Bowman is wonderfully patient with his customers and with those not really strong enough to hit the crap out of a railroad tie. Not for small children but a teenager on up would love this activity. I would do it again, BUT only after I practice my hammering skills. LOL! It is not a cheap activity but it is worth every penny paid.

If you are a Forged in Fire fan, this is a must if you are in the area. I surprised my husband by pre-purchasing a "lesson" in forging. He got to forge a knife out of a railroad spike. They were in charge of putting the spike in the furnace but he was the one to bang on the steel to create a knife shape. He even got to meet Robby Bowman who was a contestant and fan favorite on the show. It is a great thing for kids as well.

I booked a knife making lesson for myself, my son and 10 year old grandson. I had watch some youtube videos of the knife making and was really impressed about how well they worked with the kids.
We got to our appointment and selected the knives we were going to make and got ready. They took my grandson by himself and worked one on one with him. To say I was impressed with how the staff worked with him and instructed him in the forging is an understatement. They exceeded my expectations. Second to none was the staff.
When me and my son got our turns we were both forging our knife at the same time with the same instructor. Again the staff was great.
I would highly recommend anybody, any age to try this. My grandson is already making plans for which knife he wants to make the next time we are in Pigeon Forge. He also asked if we can get a forge to go with my anvil at home.

We stopped in the Iron Mountain Metal Craft with the kids in hopes of catching a live blacksmith demonstration. MANY years ago we had stopped in an caught one & thought the kids would enjoy it.
Once inside the workshop, we took a seat on one of the viewing benches. We were NOT greeted by any of the workers. We saw banners hung all around the shop boasting about how Robby Bowman had been featured on a History channel TV show. From the banner, we could pick out Robby among the men in the shop that day. There were 3 workers and not a one interacted with the guests. We watched as a family arrived, who had obviously booked a session, to make a horseshoe. We watched as one of the blacksmiths assisted him in his journey to forge a horseshoe. We probably watched for about 10-15 minutes before deciding to move on to another shop.
Overall, I was not impressed with this shop. One of kids liked watching the other family make a horseshoe. Our other child was bored. I did NOT like that we were not welcomes or engaged by ANY of the workers.

My 11 year old son did this. I called the day before the make a reservation. There were several available for the next day. Last June I called and they were booked 2 weeks out. We arrived at the set time and he got to choose which knife he wanted to make. He chose the pony knife. We went into the shop area and he put on his apron. His instructor came over to him and confirmed what knife. He was so good and joked around with our son. He is quiet so it made him feel less anxious. He went through every step of the process they would do and showed him how and where he would need to stand, how to use the hammer, etc. He was so good and very detailed. He encouraged our son while he was hammering and made sure he knew the whole process. After he picked out what type of sheath he wanted he was given and option to get laser personalization for an additional $10. Everyone there was so nice and treated our son so well. We will definitely be back. He loved it.

Do you need to make reservations to make a knife?
Written June 30, 2019
I made reservations for two separate visits but they were not booked full either time. But another time we did not have a reservation and could not get in. I would recommend reservations.

How much does this cost would love to check it out while we're down this August
Written March 27, 2018
prices vary depending on what you pick--the smaller easier items are less expensive. I believe our family of 4 (kids 13 and 10) did it for around 50-60 total for 4 pieces. Very fun. Well worth it. Something different.

What horseshoe size are used? I realize that there are standard and pony but I am curious of the shoe size that is used.
Written July 30, 2017
This is a small horse shoe. Once the knife is complete it is about six inches long. This is an approximation.

How long does the tour and project making take and what is the charge?
Written September 5, 2016
It takes about an hour to make your knife. The cost is anywhere from $25- $75, depending on the knife you pick. It was a really nice experience and the teachers were very helpful and friendly. It is not a tour, but a hands on and watching experience.

I will be coming up the third week of September and was wondering what your hours would be? Thanks!
