About
With its intact and picturesque vistas, Cheekwood is distinguished as one of the leading Country Place Era estates in the nation. Formerly the family home of Mabel and Leslie Cheek, the 1930s estate, with its 30,000-square-foot Mansion and 55-acres of gardens, today serves the public as a botanical garden, arboretum, and museum with furnished period rooms and permanent collection galleries dedicated to American art from the 18th to mid-20th centuries. The property includes 13 distinct gardens including the Blevins Japanese Garden and the Bracken Foundation Children’s Garden, as well as a 1.5-mile woodland trail featuring contemporary outdoor monumental sculpture. Each year, Cheekwood hosts seasonal festivals including Cheekwood in Bloom, Cheekwood Harvest and Holiday LIGHTS. Cheekwood is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and nationally as a Level II Arboretum.

- 554lynnrSan Antonio, Texas25 contributionsWe will definitely return every year.We had been to Nashville so many times and so we were looking for a new way to “kill several hours“ before the grand old Opry. Decided to go to Cheekwood, which we never knew about. Oh my gosh! What a beautiful hidden gem we found. We will now go to Cheekwood every time we go to Nashville. And we definitely want to try the light show at night. This is 55 acres of immaculate grounds. The plants are unbelievably beautiful. This is the family of the Maxwell house coffee company. I just can’t imagine how beautiful it is in the spring when other stuff is in bloom. it is a bit of a “madhouse” if you go on a weekend. Organized parking attendants type situation. A lot of walking. . You drive through the Bellmead area so you get to see a lot of awesome mansions on the way.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 29, 2023
- sightsnsoundsNewtown, Connecticut154 contributionsBeautiful place to visitBeautiful mansion and grounds to tour. The staff at the Cheekwood were so friendly, full of knowledge, and willing to answer any questions we had while visiting. We took a self-led tour of the mansion, though they do have an audio version you can do. The mansion is beautiful with gorgeous lighting fixtures and views of Nashville. The art exhibit had several good pieces on view. We wandered around the grounds for a bit and they are beautiful. They were gearing up for their holiday light celebration and I can only imagine how wonderful it is to visit during that time. Worth the trip.Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 6, 2023

Lots of up & down hills, quite a few sculpture as well. Nice place to visit, close early as parking can end up being quite a hike from the entranceVisited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 24, 2024
- Brent G2 contributionsWe will come againAmazing gardens - loved the color garden and the Japanese garden. The mansion was well worth it as well - if for nothing more than the art gallery - let alone the opulent surroundings. We have visited similar places/compounds before and this was up there within the top two or three. We will come again!Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 26, 2024
- AbCanadaKelowna, Canada345 contributionsBeautiful and extensive grounds for walkingWe were very impressed by this estate which is now a park. There are miles of walking trails through beautiful gardens. You can tour the original mansion which was also interesting. The grounds are beautifully maintained and the walking paths easy to navigate and interesting. There is an entrance fee but it is well worth a visit.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 29, 2024
- Amy L21 contributionsVisit at different seasonsOn the chilly April day we visited, it was in between seasons - just past the prime of the tulip special and before the later spring flowers. I would definitely like to return during a different season. The grounds have a mixture of open grass fields, manicured beds as well as paths through the woods. We did not tour the mansion. Did not feel like we were in Nashville.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 6, 2024

Just a fun area to explore. The grounds are an amazing treat for everyone. The tulips were gone but plenty of flowers and green, rolling lawns. Many fun areas for the kids and just a beautiful retreat to visit. We did not go into the mansion but looks like a good place to visit when we come back.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 5, 2024
- wahigle1Owens Cross Roads, Alabama82 contributionsGreat Day in Nashville at Cheekwood! We use to be members of Cheekwood but at our ages (90 and 85) it is not easy to drive 140 miles round trip to visit there since we live South of Huntsville, Alabama. But today we did indeed visit, as my wife being an artist truly wanted to see the Edgar Degas exhibition that is currently shown there. We got there and parked in the handicap area. Got checked in and called for a trolley to the Mansion where the Exhibition was. She spent several hours looking and reading all the reviews of each picture or drawing. She loved every moment! We called for a trolley back to the car and in minutes we were at our car ready to return home. Every volunteer, worker went out of their way to make this a perfect day and they achieved that plus more! Beautiful day, beautiful grounds, wonderful presentation of great art work and outstanding Cheekwood people both workers and volunteers to make this a most special day for us! Thank you Cheekwood, you're still good to last drop!! paul RobinsonVisited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 29, 2024

Unfortunately for us the mansion was closed for the day in preparation for the Swan Ball. It was especially fun to see all the families enjoying the day.Visited May 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 3, 2024
- Tanya9526Santa Rosa, California5 contributionsWorth it!Utterly Gorgeous! This was our first visit to Cheekwood. The grounds are stunning and go and on. Lots of exploring and exhibits for the kiddos, great photo opportunities for nature lovers and rotating exhibits for everyone. The trails are not marked very well (there is a map), so for first time visitors, take your time, be patient and enjoy the grounds.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 30, 2024

We love the gardens at Cheekwood, particularly with the children’s additions.
I was really excited when they added cafe 29, it was exactly what they needed. However, the cafe, everything about it, leaves something to be desired. The website advertises the cafe to be open from 9-4, and they are open but have no signage indicating that they only serve a limited menu until 11:00. Okay, no big deal. We waited to order until 11:00, something simple, 2 pb&j’s and an order of fries. It took a half an hour to get our food.
Keep in mind, they don’t allow outside food or drinks, and the children with me don’t drink juice (it comes with the pb&j). I asked if we could get two cups of tap water, and no juice. The answer was no. I had to buy a $3.00 bottle of water, and then they gave me cups. I eat gluten free, so I asked if I could sub out one menu item that wasn’t gluten free for more of something that came with my meal. The answer was no. The food took a half hour to come out (and we were the first ones to order that morning).
Food is over priced and not that good.
We love the gardens, but if you want the cafe to be a draw, I suggest upping the game, the customer service (make it convenient for your customers, not harder) and lowering your prices on sub par food.

What a beautiful piece of property. The tulips were in full bloom and completely gorgeous! I would recommend buying tickets ahead of time and arriving earlier in the day. We arrived at 10 am and by the time we left it was very crowded. We enjoyed the mansion and seeing all of the artwork as well. The Japanese garden was serene.

Our family visited Cheekwood on a recent Saturday morning in July. We pre purchased our tickets which makes you pick a time slot. This made it very easy to enter park but it did limit the time we could enter the house so we ended up going there first. It is a self guided tour and we enjoyed seeing the house rooms on the second floor and the art gallery on the third. We walked the grounds and I particularly liked the dogwood garden area. The train area is really unique and will appeal to anyone.
Our previous visit was during Christmas when the estate is filled with lights and ornaments. That trip was freezing and this one was blazing hot. While we have not had the best weather we enjoyed both visits and would recommend it to anyone visiting the Nashville area.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon in January. We were told at the gate that parts of the mansion and gardens were closed due to renovation and nothing was blooming so we were given "Buy one, Get one" tickets plus $5 parking. Even with that, we had an enjoyable, peaceful visit in the gardens and mansion. It is a beautiful place. I'd like to go back.
I got hot chocolate at the cafe too.
We saw many of the Christmas lights were still up and I would like to go back to see the lights during the Christmas season.

My husband & I visited here on a cold, drizzly early-April day. This site is located in a beautiful area of Nashville (our drive to it through several neighborhoods of grand private homes was a pleasure). I had pre-purchased tickets by telephone in order to get AHS membership admission (free for grounds, only $5 for a house tour).
We were too early in the season to see full spring color, but we caught the tail end of Cheekwood in Bloom’s tulip display. You can meander through the gardens on the extensive grounds on your way up to or back from the house. I did notice that the paved road you walk to reach the mansion is somewhat steep (I believe that cart rides are available for those with mobility issues).
Once up at the mansion, we were impressed by the beautiful architecture of the house, built in 1932 with a European influence. After a short introduction by a docent, we were free to explore the interior on our own. The first floor contained beautifully furnished family rooms. There are also displays giving the Cheek and Wood family tree and a timeline. (I would have loved an introductory video with more information about the families and Mr. Cheek’s accomplishment.) There is a loggia at the rear of the house, which would have been a great place to fill with some house plants and/or seasonal blooms—would have brightened up the dreary day on which we visited! The top floor contained some interesting art displays that made good use of the space (an elevator is available).
We had lunch in their casual café (counter service) up by the house; we enjoyed tasty sandwiches and salads. All in all, we spent almost three hours at this site (including our lunch break). We would have spent additional time enjoying the gardens if the weather had been nicer. It was a lovely place to explore, even without the gardens and grounds in full bloom.

The grounds are a work of art literally. Art sculptures, bridges, ponds and creeks, vistas, train sets, tree houses, and plants galore make each turn an experience. I would allow two and a half to 3 hours to really enjoy the grounds and visit the house. The house is furnished as it was when the Cheeks lived in the home, and there is usually an art exhibit upstairs.

My wife & I were in the Nashville area over Thanksgiving weekend for a sports tournament, and we were originally planning to visit Cheekwood on Saturday morning. But when I saw that they were having their annual Holiday Lights event, we switched our plans to Saturday night. We were lucky to secure 2 admissions just a few days before we traveled, thanks to Amanda of the Visitor Services Team.
The event was well organized, with plenty of staff to direct incoming traffic to parking spots & to guide guests to entry spot for the decorated garden grounds path. The Holiday Lights displays are simple but plentiful, and the self-guided tour of the Historic Mansion was well worth the time & extra charge. Our visit provided a big boost to our Christmas spirit, and we would return to Cheekwood for their other seasonal events if we returned to Nashville.

Worth it for the tulip display. The gardens appear well manicured and we enjoyed the artwork. The estate is beautiful, art displays in the estate are very nice, we had an excellent docent for the estate tour which I would recommend taking and is included in the ticket price.

We visited during December and it was cold and misty but still a fun place to visit. The grounds are gorgeous and were strung with beautiful lights. There were reindeer and food and drink concessions. It was a great night for hot cocoa. We will visit it again in the spring to see the blooming plants.

My family and I thouroughly enjoyed Cheekwood Lights this year. My husband and I had attended before, but this was the first time with our adult son. It was a wonderful part of our Christmas celebration in Nashville. We actually liked the lights a bit more this time, as it was a warmer night so we could take our time outside, and rain during our last visit kept some of the lights from working properly on that occasion. We loved the lighted flower trees and the cascading lights near the mansion as well as the unique ornaments and stars. We thought that the ticketed times were a good idea. They seemed to work just right to maintain a good flow of patrons without making it difficult to have a positive socially-distanced outside experience. The reindeer were not overly crowded, and the train exhibit was a nice addition to this year's outside offerings. As with all things since COVID, some things suffered. We missed the Christmas carolers in the museum and the poinsettia tree (though there was a nice display of white lillies). Some of the historic areas we enjoyed before seemed to be cordoned off differently, probably to prevent too many people congregating in one area at a time. Sadly, the kissing ball outside the mansion doors was also no longer available. Still, overall, we thought the staff at Cheekwood did a great job of adapting to the present circumstances. We were very pleased with our experience and hope to attend again in the future.

We are going to see the Chihuly exhibit in a few weeks and can’t decide whether to see it in the daytime or at night. Has anybody seen it at both times and preferred one over the other? I’m leaning towards day time so that we can also enjoy the beautiful gardens, but the night time pictures I have seen look spectacular too. Thanks!

Are tickets for a specific time or that day?
Written March 18, 2018
The tickets are normally for the day, however, sometimes they do have events which have tickets for specific times of the day or night. Its best to check the event calendar or call ahead to find out about the day you plan to visit. The Christmas lights were an example of an event where the day tickets had time restrictions on them.
