The Carl Van Vechten Gallery was established in 1949, when the acclaimed American painter Georgia O'Keeffe donated to Fisk the extraordinary group of works that form The Alfred Stieglitz Collection. The collection was given in honor of O'Keeffe's husband, Alfred Stieglitz, the pioneering American photographer and art impresario. The gallery was named in honor of Carl Van Vechten, an American novelist, critic, photographer and philanthropist, who played an important role in securing The Stieglitz Collection for Fisk. The Carl Van Vechten Gallery houses a changing schedule of traveling exhibitions and temporary installations from Fisk University's permanent art collections. Every two years, the gallery features The Alfred Stieglitz Collection of Modern American and European Art, which includes works by Pablo Picasso, Paul Cezanne, Auguste-Pierre Renoir, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Georgia O'Keeffe, Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, and Arthur Dove.

This gallery is associated with Fisk University. We sought it out on our family vacation so that we could enjoy some works by Georgia O'Keefe. This is a great collection of artwork that was donated by her. We really enjoyed our time there and highly recommend it. The staff was so great - they were accommodating and thoughtful and helpful.... More

View some of the collection of famous painter Georgia O'Keefe and her husband Carl Van Vechten at Fisk University, home of the famous Fisk Jubilee Singers. Fisk is an historically black university with a rich history (famous graduates: W.E.B.Du Bois, John Hope Franklin, Nikki Giovanni and John Lewis---civil rights activists and congressman). Did not have time to see the painting... More

We were unable to see the gallery as it never opened on Saturday June 22, 2013. The web site said it was open from 10-5. We arrived at around 11, it was not open. The sign on the door said Saturday and Sundays 1-5 pm. So, we went to Garden Brunch Cafe and had an amazing brunch, came back around... More

Artist Georgia O'Keefe donated her husband's art collection to Fisk University. Alfred Steiglitz, a noted photographer in his own right, had an art gallery in New York, Gallery 291. The artists, photographers, and sculptors shown and collected by Steiglitz rival that of the Phillips Collection. And this is just the beginning of the treasures found all around the campus with... The Carl Van Vechten Gallery consists of works of art collected by Van Vechten and his wife Georgia O'Keefe and includes some of their work as well. Amazing stuff. The gallery is located on the campus of Fisk University, an historically black college founded just 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. If you can ever time it to see the... More

World class art in an intimate setting. Alfred Stieglitz iconic photographs pepper an amazing collection of art. It's as close as you'll ever get to a blue period Picasso painting. View Toulouse-Lautrec, Diego Rivera, Reoir, Cezanne, Demuth and Arthur Dove to name a few. As if that wasn't enough descend the stairs to a stunning African-American permanent art collection. Go....
