While staying in the area we visited Montalto with a Japanese guest mainly to buy a nice wine .
We did the sculpture walk while we were there which was very interesting but the prices on some of the pieces did not seem realistic, I wonder if any ever get sold .
It was a pleasant walk through the vines .
Place was quite busy, quite a few were in for lunch and doing the picnic package on offer.
Our friend bought a nice expensive red and some olive oil.
Maybe if we return to the area in the future it would be nice to have a meal as it is a lovely spot .

One of the last tastings of the tour, and ended up buying a single bottle of entry level Pinot Noir to avoid the $10pp tasting fee. Honestly- if people are coming and not just looking to get drunk and want to engage and find out more, I think the fee should be waived. Just my opinion. The wines itself are nothing extraordinary- not sure if I need a dozen added to my cellar.

We visited the cellar door tasting room around 3:45pm on a Monday. We were there to sample the wines with a view to potentially buying a few bottles. Initially we were served by a quite friendly and helpful woman. The conversation was fun and the initial wines we sampled, both Chardonnay, were interesting. The Pennon Hill Chardonnay, at $30 a bottle, had quite an unusual nose but was pleasant to drink. Wines are priced between $30-70+. Around the second pour the conversation centred on wine clubs with what, we’ve recognized in hindsight, was a pretty hard-sell pitch for their club. However, despite their claims that the discount and free shipping were a bargain, the club did not appeal; and indeed did not seem any better on discount than most other wine clubs. At about this point the American man took over our tasting and the woman left. The pour sizes dropped to about a third, insufficient to appreciate the nose and resulted in all the red wines coming across as bland. The server described the fruit flavours of each wine and to our taste buds that was all there was to them, no complexity or character. We didn’t care for his perfunctory manner of talking at us rather than to us at all. He rattled off the rehearsed description of each wine and his behavior clearly suggested he was keen to move us through the tasting sequence and have us leave. We were really quite offended by his attitude, completely inappropriate in a wine tasting situation. Nonethelees we bought four bottles, two Chardonnay and two Tempranillo. Neither have since compared favourably with other similar wines in our collection. I learned subsequently that their Pinot Noirs had won awards at the Royal Melbourne Show. I’m surprised by this as the Pinot Noir offerings we sampled were quite underwhelming, adding further to our suspicion that our tasting was mishandled.

Sheer variety and epicurean delights of the set ($115) course menu plus the impeccable service made this a meal to remember.
Enjoyed foods never tried before.
The only downside was wine was just too expensive.
Extremely popular - every table on Sunday was occupied.
Amazing restaurant design with stunning views of grape-vine trellised valleys.
Great place to take your partner for a special occasion.

Montalto, what happened to you? We loved you so much. Over the years, we've enjoyed dining in your restaurant and piazza, sampled your lovely wines and olive oils and very much enjoyed the excellent hospitality of you cellar door staff. So much so that we've always come away with your products. This past Sunday we took an overseas visitor, our daughter in law and grandson to Montalto, our first choice on the peninsula. The female staff member at the cellar door (on the counter nearest the vines) was the worst cellar door host we have ever experienced anywhere in Australia, NZ or Europe, by an order of magnitude. She was abrupt, rude and almost belligerent. She almost reluctantly poured tastings for my wife, daughter in law and guest and offered no explanations of the wines at all, preferring to step back and focus on her phone. As designated driver, I didn't partake but stood back and held our grandson (who was perfectly behaved). I was astonished. As our group was about to finish the last tasting, the staff member snatched the unfinished sample out of my daughter in law's hand. This even after they purchased wine. Unbelievable! After being such a staunch advocate for Montalto, introducing many friends and associates to the place, we will not be returning. I note this is not the only review describing this type of experience in either cellar door or restaurant. Smarten up guys, hold a management review. You were so good.

Place had a great vibe and busy until we did a wine tasting. Canadian/ American guy (potentially) was rude and not friendly. He did not want to chat or tell us about the wines . We tried to prompt chat. He was disinterested and not genuine. They were not busy in the cellar no reason for this. We would have purchased a lot more of the service was better. Worst service we have experienced in the area .

Cellar door staff were rushed and disinterested . Seemed upset to be busy.

Interesting and enjoyable sculpture trail past grape vines. Includes a small wetlands boardwalk. Approx 1km return. Need to allow about 45min.

Went here to have some lunch on a family weekend, and hadn't booked, so were unable to get into the main restuarant, so went to the more casual section next door, where we had a table ready in half an hour....went and sat on the lawns and enjoyed an excellent wine whilst waiting and enjoyed the beautiful view....lunch was lovely, we all mainly had pizzas and they were delicious.....a bit more of the wine which was outstanding and then a wander through the vines and sculptures.....great afternoon.

We booked a good wine pairing
It was very disappointing for us.

Why; I would like to try to explain to you.

Starting with the positive of it: the wine-food pairing was small but perfect.

On the other hand the organization poor and presentation very bad.

We booked on the 7the September, communication was good.

But at arrival on location we have to asked to 3 persons, before we enter the right room.

Then on arriving there was no place covered for us.  According to the present man, something had gone wrong.

On the first table 6 persons will be seated.

My wife and I were placed at the other table. (no covered)

After this no any attention was given to us, at the presentation, of better we have to say, it was not a presentation.

In my opinion, normally first someone introduces himself and tells something about the company and start tot tell us wat we home do.
.
Unfortunately nothing at all.

Then all attention for the presentation went only to the other table, where four women were seated, which were probably more interesting. Nothing to us.l

We received a very small amount of every wine in contrast to the other table that received double the amount. Which seemed very strange to us.

In summary:  the total event was very disappointing to us, especially the impersonal presentation was far below expectations and the amount of money.
We visiting a few different wineries, all were better.
