- TravellerMelbourne, Australia17,552 contributionsMy wife and I walked to this place along the river side, after walking in MacKenzie Falls. In our previous visits to Grampians, we had not visited this place as we did not allocate enough time. This time around, we booked a holiday Villa for 3 nights to give us plenty of time to explore more places in Grampians. We arrived at MacKenzie Falls at 8 am midweek, off peak season when there was no one else around. It was fantastic to do the hiking with the whole place to ourselves. Parts of the walking track are very narrow and single file only.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 6, 2024
- Megan R3 contributionsWe parked at the Zumsteins Picnic Area, and hiked to Fish Falls. The walk from the carpark to the falls took about 30 mins, but this was on a very hot 34 degree day - I imagine the hike would be easier/quicker in cooler weather. That being said, we were glad it was so hot, because it made jumping into the ice cold water at Fish Falls amazing! Our 7 & 9 year old kids did the return walk easily, and the water was safe for them to swim in. Highly recommend for a family activity in the Grampians on a hot day. Just remember to take plenty of water and snacks, as there are no shops for miles around.Visited January 2025Traveled with familyWritten January 26, 2025
- rapariga_madeirense136 contributionsLoved it. Hike was interesting. Started off flat. Then had to navigate stairs and rocks to get to the Fish Falls. I highly recommend anyone doing this hike- to bring snacks. It was nice to sit by the falls. I even had my feet in the water. Saw a kangaroo and afew birds. From Fish Falls I continued onto Mackenzie FallsVisited November 2024Traveled soloWritten November 12, 2024

The walk down from Mackenzie Falls to Fish Falls is awesome! Most of the track is rocks strategically placed and it was so much fun to get down there. The walk is steeper on the way back but it wasn’t hard (we have a average fitness levels). We spent ages just hanging out halfway down the falls as it was so nice. I would recommend going as early as possible - we arrived at Mackenzie Falls at 9am and by the time we got back there at around 10.30am it was very crowded.

We access this falls by walking along the trail from MacKenzie falls.
I would suggest going to fish falls from MacKenzie falls if you are not in a rush and you are able to walk.
The walk is only 2km and it is relatively flat, and very difficult to get lost.
Apparently you can also access these falls from the fish falls carpark, which I would also recommend as you do not have to walk up all the stairs to access the MacKenzie falls.
There are far less tourists here. When we were at the MacKenzie falls it was packed, we then walked the Fish falls, and almost had the entire place to ourselves.

Did the walk from Zumstiens, to Fish Falls and on to MacKenzie falls. All up a very easy 8klm round trip following the river with the best bits being able to climb around the base of MacKenzie, and all the different levels at Fish Falls. Step off the path half way up the ladders beside Fish Falls and you're basically in the middle of the falls (half way up, half way down) Was a nice hot day for us so jumped in for a swim around the base of the falls. Water comes from the bottom of Wartook so is cold, but super refreshing

After recommendations we decided to make the trek to Mackenzie Falls via the Fish Falls track and we were glad we did. The walk is about 7.5km return, fairly easy with some steps. You can swim at Fish Falls, on the way up and/or back down, nice and quiet with only a couple of other visitors. Mackenzie Falls were busy but great to see, no swimming here. You can also swim in the creek at the Fish Falls car park. Highly recommend this walk.

We decided to walk to McKenzie falls from Zumsteins. This an easy, fairly flat and well maintained path. Fish Falls are about half way, 1.7 km. They are a good introduction to the McKenzie Falls higher up the path. There are good opportunities for viewing the Falls and is a very convenient place to stop. Coming the other way from McKenzie involves descending many steps on the side of a steep gorge and would be very strenuous to have to do climb back up which is very steep and about 0.5 km from the bottom of the Falls to the car park.

This 7km return walk that would take you between 2 - 3 hours is a lovely way to spend a morning or afternoon. Start at Zumsteins Picnic Area. This walk, suitable for energetic walkers can involve water crossings, slippery track surfaces, rock hopping and rock scrambling. Following the MacKenzie River upstream, this pleasant walk through deep gullies provides river views. This track eventually leads to the terraced base of Fish Falls. From here you can return to Zumsteins or follow the track to MacKenzie Falls. From here the track to the Falls becomes steeper, meandering through a large gorge beside the river to MacKenzie Falls. Return by same route.
Plenty of carparking at Zumsteins. Take plenty of water and snacks. Wear a hat if sunny. Not wheelchair friendly. Toilets at Zumsteins.

In my opinion, these falls are better than Mackenzie Falls, as you can walk up over them & the walk to them is also far more enjoyable. I made the approx 2.3km (one way) treck from Zumsteins Picnic Area (have a look at what's left of Zumsteins in the Historic area too, there is some wonderful information boards there to give you some history on the place) and found it to be easy walking. It's a rather narrow dirt track that takes you directly to the lower parts of the falls. From there, a mix of rock & metal steps (which will kick your heart rate up a notch or two) take you right up to the top. There aren't as many tourists here as there are at Mackenzie Falls, and there's also more space for a little time out on your own if you wish. I'd definitely say Fish Falls are a must see if you're exploring The Grampians.

If you access these falls from Zumstein's car park it is an easy, child-friendly walk to this beautiful multi-tiered waterfall. You could easily spend a few hours paddling, swimming, picnicking there or continue on the path to Mackenzie Falls which are grander, but not recommended for swimming as not particularly gentle.

Leaving Mackenzie falls and follow the river on a well maintained path. Great place to bring a little lunch or snack to eat on the flat rocks by the falls.

We walked here from the McKenzie falls, the trek from there is difficult at times. It is half way between there and Zumstiens. If you want to see these falls I would recommend you do it via the Zumstiens picnic area as the walk is easier from that way.
