About
Taking a ferry directly from Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo, located in the suburb of Mosman, is the first unexpected joy of visiting the animal park. Once there, the leisurely trails and opportunity to see some of Australia's distinct wildlife become apparent, as does the striking view of the Harbour Bridge from the seating at the aerial bird show. Advance booking can give you the chance to see koalas up close, or stay overnight and 'camp' in the zoo.

- TirexMusashino, Japan14 contributionsVisitors can get up close and personal with some of Australia's most iconic animals, including koalas, kangaroos and wallabies. Admission is high for a public zoo (A$47.70 at a web discount as of December 2024), but from an animal protection standpoint, I wonder if that's possible. Koalas must be pre-booked online at an additional cost. A ferry ride is recommended from Sydney. Cruises overlooking the Opera House and Harbour Bridge are available.Visited December 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 7, 2025
- Al WHouston, Texas38 contributionsAmazing! The zoo is great and there is one whole section devoted to local animals. The kangaroos and other animals just roam freely for the most part. I had looked for inexpensive tickets and found that my credit card had a "deal" with 2 tickets for about $10 off total (AU$ so like $3.50 a ticket). That doesn't sound like much, but the promo said we would get an "exclusive" guided tour. I figured it would be some bored kid and 30 people. I was WRONG. Tony was a retired postal employee who clearly loved the zoo. He took us all around. He was so knowledgeable, and he showed us things we would have definitely missed on our own, like an adorable koala baby clinging to its mom or JR, the 60-year-old something or other that was brought over from a Texas zoo (his species was from New Guinea, though). Tony was just great and I couldn't belive I'd saved $10 AND got this awesome tour. Pro tip: get your tickets before hand, take the ferry, and walk to the "lower entrance." That way you don't have to queue up for the busses. Walk through the zoo towards the entrance and enter the "Australia" exhibit from the lower part.Visited January 2025Traveled as a coupleWritten January 29, 2025
- ZenzeromanAvellino, Italy1,403 contributionsThe zoo is very large, and this allows visitors to admire a huge variety of animal species, even very rare. The indications are a little confusing, rendering the experience sometimes dispersive. 3 full stars, recommended!Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 2, 2025
- Kenlly BowneAustralia10 contributionsCrikey, Taronga Zoo is hands down one of the best zoos in Australia! Not only do you get up close with incredible wildlife like kangaroos, koalas, and Tasmanian devils, but the views of Sydney Harbour from here are absolutely unreal! 🌊🏙️ We took the ferry from Circular Quay, which made the trip even more exciting. The enclosures are well-maintained, and the animals look happy and healthy. The bird show was a ripper – seeing eagles and parrots fly with the Harbour Bridge in the background is something else! 🦅✨ Great spot for families, couples, or even solo travelers who love nature and animals. Make sure to wear comfy shoes – it’s a bit of a walk, but totally worth it. Highly recommend! ✅🔥Visited February 2025Traveled as a coupleWritten March 16, 2025
- Jaime ALa Coruna, Spain1,270 contributionsLocated on the edge of Sydney Bay, it is a very appropriate place to see as a family, with girls as was our case, being sure to have an entertaining day. After the entrance there is a wooden walkway to lead to the different places where the animals are, on whose sides you can see species of trees and plants representative of the country, the enormous ferns catching my attention. As for animals, demonstrations with different species are offered from time to time, such as seals, eagles and others that maintain the interest of adults, and especially children. Because of the exotic nature, it seemed striking to see koalas, kangaroos and large turtles, in addition to the more common elephants, giraffes, tigers, hippos, snakes, monkeys, etc. The zoo has a restaurant. To get to the site, we went there by bus and returned by boat to the port. At the pier I missed someone who could tell me which boat was returning (since there are several routes), instead of having to ask other people who were waiting. The return trip was very interesting, crossing the bay, passing in front of the famous bridge, the Opera House and reaching the port with the imposing skyscrapers behind. In short, my wife and I spent a great day in the company of our family, especially enjoying seeing the surprised faces our granddaughters had.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten May 30, 2024
- robert kAtlanta, Georgia23 contributionsThis place was so awesome. We saw so many animals that you would never see anywhere else in the world. We saw koalas, snakes, lizards, bears, tigers, crocodiles, platypus, dingos, meerkats, kangaroos, wallaby’s, and Tasmanian devils. I’m sure I missed some but you see what I mean. Pretty much every animal in Australia is at this zoo and not to mention you can see the opera house, bridge, and city from this place. We happen to be there during vivid Sydney also so we got to see all the lights in the city and the zoo. June is a great time to visit. It is a little cold at night but a small jacket will keep you warm. Temperatures during the day were fine.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 23, 2024
- KandTCanberra327 contributionsEvery aspect of our visit was excellent. There is clearly an emphasis on natural habitats and a commendable slant towards conservation. The highlights were watching the elephants having their morning wash and scrub in the elephant barn (including lifting their feet, one at a time, for scrubbing and toe-nail cleaning) and the "free flight birds" session - how on earth do they prompt and train these birds which are free to fly anywhere they choose to do these amazing things on cue? Recommend a visit.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 25, 2024
- Jon F45 contributionsAn easy busy ride from downtown, brought us to an extensive and well-laid out zoo, easy to follow the trails and take in all the exhibits. The animals looked to be well-cared for. Highlights for us on the day we went were the brachiating apes and squirrel monkeysVisited January 2025Traveled as a coupleWritten January 26, 2025

I visited this zoo during my stay in Sydney. I recommend you visit it in the morning when it opens due to the high turnout of people. I took the ferry at Circular Quay and, once I got to the other side of the shore, I took the cable car because the road on the way there is steeply uphill. The park is very well kept and there is a huge variety of animals. Absolutely not to be missed attraction in Sydney!

We come to see the animals not the crying babies. Pls restrict the number of people entering the zoo at any point in time, otherwise the experience is very unpleasant. Also the 90 mins free parking is a joke. There is no time to see the zoo in 90 mins, given the queues to enter different sections. Any minute above the 90 mins threshold comes with a $22 all day fee????Why not charge for every extra 30 mins or hour with a more decent fee. It is one thing if you keep the parking spot busy for 3 hours and another if you keep it busy for 8 hours.
Overall there are some great animals to see but the overcrowding and absurd parking fees make it a “don’t want to ever go there again” kind of experience.
Thanks and goodbye

A beautiful zoo looking out on Sydney Harbour. Definitely worth a visit. Catch the ferry from Circular Quay. Once you arrive you can catch the shuttle bus to the main entry or walk up the hill (could be a hard walk for some) to another entry point. I would recommend catching the bus to the main gate and then making your way down through the zoo eventually finishing at the bottom where you have a short walk to the ferry. Food is very expensive for what is available. Time spent at the zoo was 3-4 hours.

The Christmas concert at Taronga for 2022 is a very crowded event and very hard to see the performance on stage. The walk from the zoo entrance to the main lawn is really far too, so not convenient at all with small kids. It would have been more comfortable if the ticket was sold at least 1/3 less than the current number of people. Some people had to sit in areas where the stage is fully blocked. Also as some people could not see clearly, many people were standing instead of sitting in many areas so most people who are actually sitting will have their view at least half blocked. For kids their view is mostly completely blocked unless they stand up and try to peep through some openings amongst the so many people standing. I think they need more helpers in the main lawn to remind people to sit. Also need to raise the stage height because they invite people to stand at the front but this is completely blocking people who are sitting near the front because the distance from the front seat to the stage is too near so when you look up to the stage the view is covered. Overall the venue is too small to host that many people comfortably. My kids requested to go home only half hour into the event as it was a struggle to see and engage with the performance. Such a shame as it is a paid event and there are many other Christmas carols that are free and better organised.

This is a very well maintain zoo with great visibility of the animal especially Giraffe, elephant tiger and lion. Great setup! However the animal encounter has very limited slot have to arrive early to book but the slot for encounter and show are mostly around the mid day, so need to plan to stay almost one day here. Unfortunately, limited food option available at the cafe and need to wait for quite long for drink and food even though is offpeak weekday.
The show are all very short and only a few show a day.
The thing that I really like here is there are playground for kids and they really love it. Also we were surprise they allow kid to feed carrot to the goat and alpacas this is a surprise element that we were not known.
The only confusing part about going to the Zoo is non of the website mention how we can travel from city via the various cruise, took us a while to figure out. So if you travel from Darling harbour only Fantasea cruise travel to zoo, is $6 for one way trip and can buy the ticket on board, must check the schedule time.
When we try to return to darling harbor somehow the crew on board don't allow to board the cruise and dont allow to buy the ticket on board anymore.
at the end we have to wait another 30 min to take Sydney cruise to circular quay. Hopefully all this information can be explain or provided on the zoo website otherwise we have to check with various portal and vendor.

Second time I have visited with half the animals on display. The food market was closed and only a coffee shop available with limited food options. Would only recommend if you want to see half the zoo animals and pay 14 dollars for a coffee shop wrap.

We travelled from Circular Quay, purchasing our own ferry tickets and zoo tickets online whilst on the ferry.
The ferry trip is great with great views of the city, bridge etc.
From the ferry we walked up the hill to the southern entrance. First pro tip: In hindsight we should have taken the shuttle to the top main entrance.
The zoo is spread out on a steep hillside. We effectively walked to the top and am back down again, starting from the top would be easier.
The zoo itself was nice (with the usual moral conflict of wild animals being kept in very small enclosures) highlights being the koalas, Tasmanian Devils and some very large lizards running around the gardens.
Along with the usual range of exotic animals it also cames with the ubiquitous outrageously over priced sub-par food - Second pro tip: stop at Woolworths and bring your own lunch.
All up, a pretty good one for the kids.

In general it was a Fanta visit. When we arrived Taronga zoo we found that the entrance which is close to the wharf was in maintenance but luckily we could take a bus or sky Siri to the entrance on the top of the hill. As there were many people in the queue waiting for skyways, we chose bus to reach the top of the mountain. We booked the family tickets online using 2 NSW discover vouchers so the price was really nice. After we entered the zoo we walked through to the zones popular animals such as seals, sea lions and Sumatra tigers as they were my kid’s favourites. There were heaps of people watching the famous animals but we still got the chance to walk in and have a clear view of them so my kid was excited when seeing them.We also watched other animals such as giraffes, elephants, dromedaries, meercats, sun bears, a variety of reptiles and some other different wild animals. We stayed in the zoo for more than 3 hours and before we left we bought the tortoise toy in the souvenir shop for my kid and she was really happy with it. We took the sky siri from the zoo to the wharf and took a ferry to leave Taronga zoo. In summary it was an excellent trip for our entire family!

Deplorable experience, charged me twice on the website for our tickets, took three weeks and four staff members for them to agree it was an issue.
NOW they have told us we have to wait 5-6 weeks for a refund????? How is this realistic when a transaction is instant. Do they know what the economy is doing to family finances?
Apart from this the zoo was very ordinary, if it wasn't for the location, everyone would go to Western Sydney. Poorly administered and managed.

Not 4,000 animals! Not in Sydney either
Spent a lot of time getting to this zoo that was extremely far from downtown Sydney, Toms of school age field trips in groups. Zoo is extremely small. Claims to have 4,000 animals. Not True. Shame that this is even advertised as a Sydney Zoo. We are zoo members in our state. Staff ? Didn’t really see many . Very disappointing.

How do you book animal encounters & find times for the various animal talks & shows? Couldn’t find any clear info on their website
Written September 12, 2022
Hi, animal encounters can only be booked on the day. I believe it’s a first come, first served basis. The animal talks and shows run every half an hour or so, you can collect a map on your way in which shows all the times on there.
If you want to see the seal show I suggest lining up half an hour before the show so you don’t miss out as there’s limited seating.

We are flying into Sydney's international airport and staying at the Wildlife retreat Taronga. Is it possible to take public transportation from the airport to the Taronga zoo ?
Written November 21, 2021
Yes, public transport is actually the fastest way to the Zoo. First just catch a Public Train from the Airport to Circular Quay. Then just find the Taronga Zoo Wharf for a 12 minute Public Ferry ride direct to the Zoo.
Written November 22, 2021
Whats it like during these covid times im guessing no animal encounters? I read on their site they are still doing the bird show with reduced capacity but what about the seal show?
Written January 24, 2021
I always like to be positive, particularly about Taronga Zoo as I have been there many times over the years. But my opinion the zoo barely meets a good standard. There is much construction which precludes seeing much of the Savannah enclosures, refreshments/food very hard to get too, one entrance only (top only). So, through no fault of the zoo I think during COVID times I would go elsewhere. Perhaps when some of the restrictions that impact are lifted it would be worth it.... Sorry about that but the zoo is impacted in a big way but only my viewpoint.

What are the must see areas of the zoo, do they have a discount for concession card holders?
Written January 13, 2020
There is a concession price for seniors, around 10% off the normal entry price ($43) . Our daughter had the entertainment book luckily which allowed us access to the zoo for $36.75, so it paid for itself really on the day!
The seal show is a hoot, and was great fun for our grandkids to watch. However, get there before the allotted start time as seating can be a bit difficult if you find standing challenging for a half hour show. Plus, do not sit in the front row,it can get a little wet!

Is it best to pre book a ferry ticket & zoo entry before heading to Australia? Is it easy getting to & from the cable car form the ferry?
Written July 11, 2019
You should have a reservation for the Zoo if you plan on any special tours or guides. Plus prebooking allows you entry into the cable car. Otherwise you have to take a bus ride to the ticket counter.
As for the Ferry. No need for a reservation. Just walk up and use the opal card. The opal card is Sydney’s train, bus and ferry prepaid entry card. You just add funds to it as needed.
Have a great time.
