Rookwood is unique for Sydney because it's the biggest and packs in so many cultures. It's one of the most unpleasant cemeteries I've been to though - roads all through it with hardly any footpaths and cars driving through at crazy speeds, plus lots of noisy construction vehicles. What almost redeems it is the old overgrown section in the north, great for exploring and looking for old Sydney figures, however, this section is noisy from the marshalling yards.

Having numerous ancestors interned at Rookwood, we finally made our pilgrimage. We need to go back as the vastness of the place was beyond us on a hot day. We went on a Sunday and as a result could not locate any staff which of course is understandable. We managed some of the Catholic & Jewish precincts in the four hours we spent there. Anyway what we did see and discover did not disappoint and we have put Rookwood back on our bucket list for quite a few visits to come. Only gripe we have is that some of the OLD areas require a bit of overdue care.

Rookwood is an amazing place full of interesting historical and cultural details. The staff at the two offices we visited were very helpful in our search for the final resting place of long gone ancestors. A genealogists dream come true.

I’ve been coming here for years to visit relatives & friends now passed. Despite the sadness that this can obviously bring, I’m proud that my home city of Sydney has a cemetery as well maintained, as huge & as natural garden & tree-wise etc as Rookwood. There’s even an annual sculpture exhibition here every September called ‘Hidden’. Thank you to everyone involved that keeps Rookwood the peaceful & beautiful place it is to visit.
