GRIM "Artisans Coffee Shop"
Nov 2021
Avoid "Artisans Coffee Shop". Visited 3rd week Nov 2021. Made to sit outside in cold and rain despite there being plenty of room inside. Sausage and bacon sandwiches (£5.50 each) arrived on dry unbuttered bread with equally dry wizened sausage but WITHOUT bacon. Were returned and came back with a piece of near burnt pig product about the size and texture of a small trotter clipping inserted into each one. VILE!!! Before leaving we asked to use the toilet and were directed to the public WC 200 metres up the lane next to the dam (more trudging about in the rain). Maybe in such a rural area they are concerned about the lack of capacity in their own premises sewerage system to handle potentially substantial flows of vomit.
To summarise; Serving foul "food" via ignorant and contemptuous "service".
Recommended if you need to flush out the contents of you wallet and bowels.
The reservoir's nice though........

Wonderful natural setting but in need of some TLC
Nov 2021
The Victorian lake has a wonderful natural setting. Built in the 1880s, it has matured into the landscape and is surrounded by a lovely mix of beech, oak and larch woodlands. These look glorious in early November with autumn colour.

I used to visit every summer from the mid 1980s to early 2000s and some visits at Christmas time too. Although the lake is as lovely as ever the visitor facilities are looking very tired. The only thing open was the cafe serving take aways and toilets, visitors centre closed. By the dam is the starting point for several short walks. I was really saddened to see how the sculpture trail was looking. Sometimes its OK to allow wooden work to slowly decay back into the landscape, but this just looked uncared for. Its still a nice stroll for the mature trees but no artworks. The other very short (puzzle) trail was closed because of forestry work.

The best walk to do is at the opposite end of the lake to the waterfall. This is spectacular and a reasonably easy walk from the car park. The green walk can be added to - making a longer route and visiting a lakeside bird hide. This involved crossing a stream on stepping stones that after heavy rail was not passable and time backtracking. It would not be a large amount of work to put a footbridge to make the green route passable. On the drive back we noted several of the other footpaths were closed. Given the amount of tree work going on it would be helpful to have some visitor orientation about what walking routes are open.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are currently in the process of updating the signage in the sculpture park and looking at improving the area in the future. The cafe is currently undergoing refurbishment and they are hoping to re-open again at the beginning of November and they will also be offering a wider selection of food. We appreciate your feedback and take on board all of your comments.

Totally unspoilt, beautiful and peacful place.
Oct 2021
We drove around the lake, as it is very big and there are plenty of places to park on the way round.
If you have time, park at the waterfall car park and walk to the waterfall - fairly easy walk which takes around an hour there and back. (Take the path to the left of the river for a better view of the falls)
Also worth stopping at the picturesque picnic site opposite the straining tower, although there were lots of biting midges lurking in the grass when we visited, so wear bug spray.
Another good place to stop was at the Old Village car park near to the straining tower, as there are the "Giants" (tall conifers) to look at, including a large hand scupture made out of a large conifer that was hit by lightening.
There is also a lovely picnic and beach area here, with outstanding views across the lake.
There is a car park over the dam to the left, past the cafe and down the hill. You can follow various trails from here, either along the river to the sculpture park or up into the hills for beautiful views of the lake.
The cafe was not open for indoor dining when we visited and service for take away food was extrmemely slow, with large queues, so take a picnic.
The gift shop near to the cafe is worth a visit and very reasonably priced.

Looking a bit neglected now :( but huge potential if some areas where upgraded and some children quizes/activities etc
Oct 2021 • Family
A lovely location but a little run down, been a couple of times now and we've always had one child in a pushchair so limited where we can go which, not a problem though as we go down the bottom, but everytime we are dissapointed that the area 'sculpture park' is in disrepair and no signs of anything going to be done. It would be a great area for activitys for the children, noticed a couple if signs stapled to trees about birds but only saw 3, 1 was missing the English part, so much potential but just looking at the old sculptures falling apart it make the place look so run down.
They we went up to the cafe for cake at my 5 year olds request, from previous visits we knew they did cake, but the shock that the cafe was not yet fully open, I.e only offering limited things outdoors, one being ice cream in October and no cakes anywhere :( 2 very dissapointed children. Then we see the shop across the road has closed.

I really hope things improve as like I say huge potential but letting stuff go to ruin makes it look very neglected, would probably be better to remove the damaged sculptured and plaques that you can't actually read anything on anymore.

Work has been slow due to the impact of COVID19. We appreciate your feedback and take on board all of your comments. Thanks

Don't miss the huge waterfall at the west-end of the lake!
Oct 2021 • Family
A hidden jem! A beautiful place, quiet and scenic. Lots of wildlife, easily accessible with well placed (free!) car parks. Visitor centre was closed, but enough information on boards and online. Plenty of walks to cater for all, bike hire, some water sports. TOP TIP: don't miss the huge waterfall at the far end, a relatively flat 0.8m walk, we managed it with a 3 year old.

Such a nice place to visit, free parking and cafe nearby, lots of little walks you can go on, you can even hire a bike, lots of nice scenery about and picnic areas, definitely worth a visit, especially if the sun is shining

Why no visitor centre?
Aug 2021
Great place to visit.

However the visitors' centre was closed.

This somewhat detracted from the visit as there is so much to learn from this amazing piece of engineering.

Make sure you visit the gift shop!
Aug 2021 • Family
What a lovely place I’d say little but the lake is huge, I assume the ice creams were amazing as everyone was wanting one. best bit is the little shop in the corner, fab stuff at great prices lots of pocket money bits for the kids and the owner was lovely. Fab play area and lots of stop off points round the lake if you don’t fancy a ten mile walk you can drive round it.

Spectacular lake
Aug 2021
Lake Vyrnwy is a spectacular place to visit. Nestling within a vast wooded estate topped and surrounded by rolling hills, it's the water supply for Liverpool. A road surrounds the lake and there's opportunities to hire bikes - or you can simply hike around if you wish, or of course take a trip in your car. Whatever you do, you won't be disappointed. Everything has been well thought out for the visitor. There are picnic areas, a boat station, and signposted walks. At the very end there is a walk up to a spectacular waterfall. There are also a number of hides for birdwatchers. Best during the week when its quieter but even on busy weekends there is enough space to lose yourself.

Fabulous day out.
Jul 2021 • Couples
Have spent many days in Lake Vyrnwy. With children, friends or as a couple. Have cycled around it and driven around it. Clean toilets 👍. There is a cafe selling tea, coffee and icecream. Always go to the hotel at the end of the day for either a meal or just a cup of tea. There is a large picnic area but over the years weather has taken its toll. Could do with repairs. Also there is a lovely walk further around, taking you to a lovely waterfall but lots of newcomers miss it as it's not well signposted, this area could really be improved with some seating and benches, that would be perfect. If the picnic area could be repaired and more seating put in around the area it would be perfect. Also there is a lovely bird hide. We've also hired canoes with our grandchildren. We love it there. Just need some little tweeks. 👍☀️😃.
