About
Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens have undergone a spectacular transformation and are being restored to their former glory. First laid out in 1804 in the 'picturesque' style of Humphry Repton, the famous Victorian landscape designer, the gardens had become derelict by 1996. There are 10 acres of gardens, included a 2 acre Walled Garden, fantastic valley gardens packed with unusual and interesting plants, flowering shrubs and trees; river and waterfalls. Home made cakes are served in the traditional Tea Room. Visitor Centre describing the history and restoration of the gardens. In 2017 open 12noon-5pm on Weds/Thurs/Suns in April; Tues/Weds/Thurs/Suns May-Sep; Weds/Thurs/Suns in October. Pre-booked private group tours by appointment.

- holtimesChesterfield, United Kingdom135 contributionsStunningThis is a stunning garden, really beautiful, very well tended. It is obvious that the place is loved. The planting is lovely and there are some unusual shrubs, trees and ferns. The areas by the stream/river are so tranquil. The cafe is clean and airy and the food tasty. We would highly recommend a visit.Thank you for your review. The restoration of the gardens has absolutely been a labour of love and the staff care deeply about the gardens and visitors' enjoyment of them, so we are delighted that you enjoyed your time in the gardens and tea room.Written September 25, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 22, 2023
- Bev BBlackburn, United Kingdom765 contributionsBeautiful Hidden Gardens in Menai BridgeEven though we visited on a rainy day which got worse and worse we had a thoroughly enjoyable time. We would have taken much more time than the hour and a half to linger and thoroughly appreciate these stunning gardens which really reminded me of a smaller version of Bodnant Gardens. It was so bad we were given a laminated map of the grounds, what a marvellous idea. Wish I could have bought some plants, but just wasn't practical for us being so wet and being on a mini break in Angelsey. Gardeners World 2 for 1 are only accepted on certain days, so check GW website 1st.Thank you for your review. We have had some very wet days recently and are glad that you enjoyed the gardens despite the weather. We do what we can to ensure our visitors can enjoy and explore the gardens no matter the weather and we are glad that you found the laminated map useful.Written October 2, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 30, 2023
- Climber1347675 contributionsAn enjoyable afternoon in the Spring sunshine. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit yesterday, venturing into areas we had not been in before. The waterfalls and pools were lovely after the heavy rain, blue bells on the banks, and lots of azaleas. In the formal garden the tulips were beautiful. Lots of bird song added to our experience.Thank you for your kind comments and we are delighted that you had a lovely afternoon exploring the gardens. It's a wonderful time of year to tickle all the senses with the sights, sounds and scents throughout the gardens.Written April 18, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 17, 2024
- Gill G1 contributionReally delightful gardensWe have visited these gardens several times and they never disappoint. There was lots of colour from rhododendrons, azaleas, magnolias and many more. This is a great garden, you can wander down amongst huge trees to a very pretty waterfall. Lots of very unusual plants. Bit of a struggle to get back up, but not to worry the tearooms are worth the trouble. Very peaceful and enjoyable.Thank you for your review. It is such a wonderful time of year, with so much colour. We are delighted that you enjoy visiting the gardens and seeing how they are evolving. - J P MLytham St Anne's, United Kingdom36 contributionsA HAVEN OF BEAUTY AND TRANQUILITYAbsolutely delightful, well-maintained, peaceful gardens. Never as crowded as an NT garden, this is a place to spend a few relaxing hours, savouring the tranquility. Lovely café with views over the garden. Will definitely come again. Be aware that the garden and paths down to the stream are sloping and are quite steep in places, so perhaps best to call for advice if you are a wheelchair user or are not as nimble on your pins as others may be.Thank you for your review. We are delighted that you enjoyed savouring the tranquillity of the gardens. - jpcheshire1615Wilmslow, United Kingdom542 contributionsStunning hidden gardensWe spent several hours walking round the Hidden Gardens and enjoyed every minute. The gardens range from the very formal centre to the woodland on the edges. There were surprises at each bend in the paths, There are many unusual and interesting plants to see, some exotic and some from much closer to home. The bluebells under the trees were stunning. It must take a lot of work to make the woodland seem so natural. We are looking forward to going again on our next visit to Anglesey.Thank you for your review. Our staff love to share the gardens with visitors and it truly delights us when visitors enjoy themselves. The Valley Gardens are planted with the Picturesque in mind and as you rightly pointed out, each placement is considered to maintain the natural feel. - IanBradford, United Kingdom85 contributionsLovely gardenThis is a fantastic garden which is peaceful and tranquil. It’s amazing how well it has been restored in about 25 years. The cafe is also excellent with great food and friendly service. We also enjoy the fact that dogs are not allowed so there was no barking to upset the peace of the garden. I imagine the holiday cottages are good to but we will have to try that another time.Thank you for your review. It has taken many years and a lot of hard work from a small group of people to get to where we are today, but it is worth it to share the gardens with visitors from all over the world. If you enjoy the tranquillity, then you will love staying in one of the holiday cottages as cottage guests can explore the gardens outside public hours: I can say from experience that there is nothing quite like taking a stroll around the gardens as the sky transitions from blue to pink and gold; and the evening creature calls and the soft crunch of gravel are the only sounds in the world.Written May 20, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 14, 2024
- Carmela38 contributionsOne of the best gardens to visit in the UKThis is one of the best outdoor places to visit on Ynys Môn. It is beautiful! Happily stayed here for three hours with my family and had a lovely tea - would suggest getting in early if you want lunch as the cafe gets very busy. We were there on a Thursday when it opened and it was busy at 12:03pm. The staff are just lovely and really helpful, and the cafe and facilities are clean and the food good. The gardens are just amazing and the waterfalls, river and beautiful plants are so enchanting. I’d stay for longer next time. Would really recommend even if you’re not into gardens. I’d love to stay in the wonderful holiday cottages.Thank you for your kind review. We are delighted that you enjoyed exploring the gardens; depending on the day, the tea room can be very busy. - Andy IChester, United Kingdom48 contributionsFantastic afternoon outAbsolutely beautiful gardens, a real hidden gem. You have a choice of beautiful manicured formal gardens, jungle or wilderness all in one visit. Limited access for wheelchair users and those unsteady on feet but I walk with a stick and had no problems. There are well marked routes from yellow (wheelchairs and prams) blue (moderate with out steps, and red (more challenging).Thank you for your review. The physical geography of the gardens can make it challenging for visitors with limited mobility to explore to explore in their entirety, so we do what we can to inform visitors before they enter. The different areas offer something different, so I am delighted that you had no problem exploring them all.Written July 8, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 26, 2024
- Dawn5354Leeds, United Kingdom37 contributionsThe Hidden Gardens - visual treat!Plas Cadnant gardens are just lovely and will not dissapoint - if you can access a guided tour then so much the better although there is a useful map available at the entrance/visitor centre to guide you around the areas. The history of the estate is worth checking out and information is available in the display in the entrance/visitor area. There is a lovely cafe with good food at reasonable prices. Some of the wooded areas are challenging for those less mobile but for most can be accessed with care. The estate has evolved with care and foresight and is still being developed, the areas around the river and waterfalls is well worth the effort. Indeed the whole estate is a treat and an experience that should not be missed on any visit to Anglesey or the surrounding area.Thank you for your kind review. Throughout the summer we have weekly guided walks with our head gardener that, I agree, are not to be missed. We also have a programme of other walks throughout the season that offer something a little different for repeat visits. We always advise care when exploring the more challenging areas, but they certainly are worth the effort and a good excuse for a tasty treat when you return to the tearoom!Written July 18, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten July 9, 2024

Wonderful gardens! We’ve been coming to Anglesey for many years but had never made it to Plas Cadnant. Wow - we were so impressed. Beautiful planting - the hydrangeas are stunning at this time of year. Our children loved the jungle area and waterfalls. It really is a hidden gem. Friendly staff in the tea room and around the gardens. Excellent cake. We’ll be back. Covid arrangements were very sensible and clear e.g., distancing markers in buildings, one way system.

We were saying in our caravan nearby and on way to Beaumaris through Menai Bridge when we saw the sign, I has seen a leaflet at campsite with no real plans we decided to visit. It was just after 12pm when grounds open so relatively busy with a few people in front and behind whilst trying to maintain social distancing. We had a lovely walk round the the easier of paths has we have mobility problems and saw some amazing plants my favorite was the alpine sea holly a beautiful blue thistle. When we retuned to the main buildings the harpist Michael Richards was playing he had been setting up when we set off. I looked at the songs he had on the CDs he was selling. His legacy CD had may favourites of mine on including the wonderful chi Mai the theme tune of the 19802 BBC 2 TV drama The Life and Times of David Lloyd George. I had great delight playing it later that week when we visited Llanystumdwy and Criccieth where DLG lived. DLG was MP for Caernarfon Borough then Prime Minister. i have plant identify app on my phone and enjoyed discovering new to me plants

Thank you for your review. We are thrilled that you enjoyed your visit to the gardens; the eryngium are among my favourites too and are so vibrant at the moment. It is always a treat to have Michael's harp playing and a treat to have a soundtrack to your visit to Llanystumdwy.

Beautiful place to visit and different routes for level of ability. There was one thing I found frustrating though. The only way into this garden is through a very large building with large open doors at either end. Because of this you have to wear masks and enter track and trace details. But this is a garden and I forgot for a split minute from getting out of my car in a field and was therefore shouted at the full length of the building and believe me it is a very big building. (The sign to wear a mask was on the open door didn't notice it). I have no problem wearing a mask had it in my pocket but as the words of welcome were loudly " put your mask on" and "fill in the track and trace" I didn't feel very welcome. I didn't stop to read the information lining the walls. Now there is a way of entering this garden without going inside a building and I would of liked the option to do this because I do agree covid is still a problem and being inside buildings with other people should be avoided.
The gardens themselves are lovely.

Thank you for your review. We are thrilled that you found the gardens beautiful. I am however sorry that you found the entry into the gardens frustrating. Unfortunately, it is not possible to use the chained-off vehicular access for visitor entry as it would require having our electronics and paperwork outdoors. We have several signs around the entrance (including on the table directly ahead) reminding visitors of the Covid measures and our staff are asked to remind visitors of these measures to ensure the safety of all our staff and visitors.

Although we've visited Anglesey many times we only just discovered Plas Cadnant and are delighted that we did. We were lucky enough to arrive as the head gardner, who introduced himself as Chris, was about to commence a free tour of the gardens. He was approachable, knowledgeable and clear, and gave us a huge amount of detail, both about the background of the estate, and about the various plants which could be seen. It was fascinating, and his expertise and his passion for the gardens, and for gardens in general, shone through. We learnt a lot that we'd have otherwise missed.
However, even if you aren't lucky enough to get an expert guided tour there's loads to see here, this is an attractive and interesting place to visit and lose yourself for a couple of hours - and I speak as somebody who isn't generally a particular garden enthusiast.
It's worth noting that some of the paths in the less formal parts of the garden are steep and there are a number of steps - not too challenging if you wear sensible shoes and are reasonably fit but potentially an issue if you have restricted mobility. The paths are clearly marked however, with a colour chart on the free leaflet to indicate which paths are suitable for visitors with different levels of mobility.
I see the comments about the tea room from some reviewers. It isn't cheap, but it's not really a snack bar, it's a proper tea room. They have some very tasty cakes which you can enjoy with a proper pot of tea or a decent coffee and a splendid view over the gardens. A brew and a cake each for the two of us came to ÂŁ11.80 which I don't think compares that unfavourably with a high street coffee shop. In any event if you feel that's a bit steep it's really not very far to Menai Bridge or Beaumaris where there are plenty of places to eat.
Overall we had a very enjoyable afternoon - it was made even better for us by the guided tour, but even absent that I would still happily recommend Plas Cadnant for a visit.

The hidden gardens are a delight & the staff extremely helpful & informative, especially the gardener, up a ladder, trimming the foliage in the walled garden! The scones are a credit to the bakers & the jam tasted homemade, too. The gardens looked amazing; very well kept & we loved the topiary & the BIG apples. Giving apples away free was a lovely touch.
Minor negatives, having read others’ reviews: the main lunch meals in the cafe seem a bit overpriced & the admission fee for fit people, too, compared with similar venues. As Historic Houses members we got in free with cards, but as I am still recovering from hip fractures 6 months ago, I attempted the blue route with walking poles but was struggling. Can appreciate someone in a wheelchair finding it difficult to see very much beyond walled garden. (Think National Trust admit disabled & carers free?) I do note that, on the website, it stresses that much is not suitable for disabled access but feel this may be overlooked.
Overall - a great place & a credit to the owner & staff. Good luck for the remaining renovation plans.

It was a beautiful garden we loved it. We spent ÂŁ39 to get in. After we had looked around it began to rain so we went into the lovely tea room and spent ÂŁ16 for coffee. We had our own picnic and when I asked if we could eat our sandwiches in the shaded area in the courtyard as it was pouring down ( not in the cafe ) we were told NO! No one else was there, we would have cleaned up after ourselves and I had my elderly parents and young children with us. We were very unimpressed with the response and we feel this is an oversight for the gardens. We did not feel very welcomed.

Thank you for your review. We are pleased that you found the gardens beautiful, but are sorry that you were disappointed with not being able to eat you picnic within our tea room area. We visited Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens today on perhaps the rainiest day we have seen for a while - despite the rain the beautiful gardens were still definitely worth the visit!
We arrived and were greeted by a lovely man who informed us that the gardens were just about to close due to the bad weather, however he allowed us to have a quick walk around anyway just before they closed up - and I’m so grateful he did! We spent a week here in Anglesey and this was by far my favourite place we visited.
The gardens were stunning - wide, accessible paths surrounded by beautiful greenery, a waterfall and hundreds of different plants and flowers.
The staff were friendly and welcoming. They had a lovely looking tea room also, closed already as we arrived late but I’m looking forward to returning in better weather!

Fabulous hidden garden with impressive approach and interesting history now being sympathetically restored by passionate owner. Very sunny day so lovely to stroll through the woodland walk to the river. Only disappointment was the fact that hot food is only available til 2pm so from 1.30 large queues built up and slow service. Cake and hot drinks served 12 til 5pm.

Thank you for your review. We are delighted that you enjoyed exploring the gardens and are sorry that you were disappointed that light lunches are only served until 2.30pm. I have spoken with the catering team who confirm that despite additional staff, it was a busy afternoon. They did however highlight that just before 2.30pm a member of staff checked whether each customer in the queue wished to purchase any light lunches and none did. This is their standard practice when there are queues at 2.30pm as they do not wish for any customers to miss out due to queuing. The recent fine weather has been wonderful and we are glad that you were able to visit during the sunshine.

What a fantastic place! Stunningly beautiful gardens to wander about in. A wide range of different types of planting, including a lovely waterfall. On a gorgeous, sunny day it felt almost tropical. I absolutely loved it and will definitely be going again. Great cafe too. I recommend getting there for opening time (12 noon) as the cafe got very busy later on. Plenty of space to wander around the garden, though I imagine July/August will get very busy.

Thank you for your review. The Lower Valley in particular can feel quite tropical; it actually has it's own microclimate that allows us to grow certain plants that we would otherwise be unable to grow. Our catering team will be delighted that you enjoyed the tearoom and we look forward to welcoming you back.

Entrance fee was not worth the value for disabled as the are they could get to was only about 1/5th of the garden. Advised they could go across the grass but mobility scooters could not get on with a 4” step up and no slope/ramp to get on or off. OAP fee again not worth it due to the gradient down to the bottom as most are not good at walking due to age so cannot get to see everything. Went in June gardens looked unkempt and not labels to identify plants/shrubs/trees. There was not many plants in bloom so need to pick your time of year to get the most of your visit.

In response to your review, our staff are disappointed and greatly offended by your comments as our garden team work exceptionally hard throughout each week of the year to maintain the gardens. We make it as clear as possible that the gardens are not ideal for visitors with limited mobility and many of our less mobile visitors find our disabled rate of £4.00 (less than half our standard entry rate) very reasonable. Also, the suggested routes on the map indicate the areas that are more suitable for wheelchairs and mobility scooters; other areas depend on the suitability of the wheelchair or scooter. The vast majority of our plants are labelled and there is currently quite a bit of colour from our varieties of rose, lily and cornus to name a few current highlights; and am sorry that you didn’t see them. I believe the owner has replied to your email in greater detail and hope you find it of use. I am sorry that your opinion was so different to most of our visitors and that you were disappointed.

The smaller part of the garden is wheelchair friendly but the best parts are down steep rugged paths. Super cafe there.

Visitors are welcome to exercise dogs on a lead in our extensive parkland - they need to be kept on a lead as we have sheep and lambs on the land. Only assistance dogs are permitted in the gardens and Tea Room. Our historic gardens have feature topiary which is vulnerable to dog urine, so for this reason we regret we do not allow dogs within the Hidden Gardens.
Parking is available in the shade of trees (to the right of the main parking area as you approach) and we provide water by the entrance.

Would a couple of doddery eighty year olds be able to walk around? They're not very good with steep slopes.
Thanks in advance.

Menai Bridge, United Kingdom
Hi Mark,
The Gardens are situated in a valley, so much of the land is sloping to a degree, but the Walled Garden is accessible to all and the Upper Valley has a few slightly steeper slopes that can be avoided. The Lower Valley is the steepest area of the Gardens and I would advise avoiding if slopes are difficult, but we do have a few viewpoints overlooking the Lower Valley that can be reached by gently to moderate slopes.
We do offer a half price rate (ÂŁ3.50) for visitors with limited mobility. We do advise visitors to explore the Gardens at their own pace and we have benches placed at regular intervals throughout the Gardens.
I hope the above information is helpful and please don't hesitate to contact us should you require any further assistance.
